- John 8:25 The Jews try to get Jesus to state explicitly that He is the Christ, the Son of God, but He refuses to allow them to hear such a direct statement until His hour comes in Mt 27:63-64.
- John 8:25 Or this may be a question. Or, Exactly what thing I am. This is an idiomatic response, and scholars are not certain of the exact nuance. Plus there is a textual variant that allows this to be, How is it that I am even speaking to you at all? In any case, the point is clear: You ought to know who I am by now!
