Living Bible

38 I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.”

39 “Our father is Abraham,” they declared.

“No!” Jesus replied, “for if he were, you would follow his good example. 40 But instead you are trying to kill me—and all because I told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham wouldn’t do a thing like that!

38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(A) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[a]”(B)

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,”(C) said Jesus, “then you would[b] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(D) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(E) Abraham did not do such things.
