Lazarus Dies at Bethany
11 Now a man was ill – Lazarus from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair,(C) and it was her brother Lazarus who was ill. 3 So the sisters sent a message to him: ‘Lord, the one you love is ill.’
4 When Jesus heard it, he said, ‘This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God,(D) so that the Son of God(E) may be glorified through it.’ 5 Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that he was ill, he stayed two more days in the place where he was. 7 Then after that, he said to the disciples, ‘Let’s go to Judea(F) again.’
8 ‘Rabbi,’(G) the disciples told him, ‘just now the Jews tried to stone you,(H) and you’re going there again? ’
9 ‘Aren’t there twelve hours in a day? ’ Jesus answered. ‘If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.(I) 10 But if anyone walks during the night,(J) he does stumble, because the light is not in him.’
11 He said this, and then he told them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,(K) but I’m on my way to wake him up.’
12 Then the disciples said to him, ‘Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.’
13 Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought he was speaking about natural sleep. 14 So Jesus then told them plainly, ‘Lazarus has died. 15 I’m glad for you that I wasn’t there so that you may believe. But let’s go to him.’
16 Then Thomas(L) (called ‘Twin’[a]) said to his fellow disciples, ‘Let’s go too so that we may die with him.’
The Resurrection and the Life
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb(M) for four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem(N) (less than three kilometres[b] away). 19 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.’
23 ‘Your brother will rise(O) again,’ Jesus told her.
24 Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’(P)
25 Jesus said to her, ‘I am(Q) the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me,(R) even if he dies, will live.(S) 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.(T) Do you believe this? ’
27 ‘Yes, Lord,’ she told him, ‘I believe you are the Messiah,(U) the Son(V) of God, who comes into the world.’(W)
Jesus Shares the Sorrow of Death
28 Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, ‘The Teacher is here and is calling for you.’
29 As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.(X) 30 Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb(Y) to cry there.
32 As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet(Z) and told him, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died! ’
33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was deeply moved[c] in his spirit(AA) and troubled. 34 ‘Where have you put him? ’ he asked.
‘Lord,’ they told him, ‘come and see.’
35 Jesus wept.(AB)
36 So the Jews said, ‘See how he loved(AC) him! ’ 37 But some of them said, ‘Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes(AD) also have kept this man from dying? ’
The Seventh Sign: Raising Lazarus from the Dead
38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.(AE) 39 ‘Remove the stone,’ Jesus said.
Martha, the dead man’s sister, told him, ‘Lord, there is already a stench because he has been dead for four days.’
40 Jesus said to her, ‘Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory(AF) of God? ’(AG)
41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised his eyes and said, ‘Father, I thank(AH) you that you heard me.(AI) 42 I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe you sent(AJ) me.’ 43 After he said this, he shouted with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out! ’ 44 The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unwrap him and let him go.’
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he did believed in him.(AK) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees(AL) and told them what Jesus had done.
47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin(AM) and were saying, ‘What are we going to do since this man is doing many signs? 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans(AN) will come and take away both our place and our nation.’
49 One of them, Caiaphas,(AO) who was high priest(AP) that year, said to them, ‘You know nothing at all! 50 You’re not considering that it is to your[d] advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish.’(AQ) 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die(AR) for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children(AS) of God. 53 So from that day on they plotted to kill him.(AT)
54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly(AU) among the Jews but departed from there to the countryside near the wilderness,(AV) to a town called Ephraim, and he stayed there with the disciples.
55 Now the Jewish Passover(AW) was near, and many went up to Jerusalem(AX) from the country to purify themselves before the Passover. 56 They were looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple,(AY) ‘What do you think? He won’t come to the festival,(AZ) will he? ’ 57 The chief priests(BA) and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it so that they could arrest him.

Ang Pagkamatay ni Lazaro
11 1-2 May usa ka tawo nga ginganlag Lazaro. Siya ug ang iyang mga igsoon nga si Maria ug si Marta nagpuyo sa Betania. Kini si Maria mao kadtong babaye nga mibubo ug pahumot sa mga tiil sa Ginoo ug iyang gipahiran sa iyang buhok. Ang iyang igsoon nga si Lazaro nagsakit. 3 Busa nagpadala ang managsoon nga babaye ug mensahe kang Jesus nga ang iyang gihigugma nga higala nagsakit. 4 Pagkadungog ni Jesus niini, miingon siya, “Kini nga sakit dili mopaingon sa kamatayon, kondili nahitabo kini aron mapasidunggan ang Dios tungod sa iyang gahom ug aron ako nga Anak sa Dios mapasidunggan usab.”
5 Pinangga ni Jesus si Marta, si Maria ug si Lazaro. 6 Apan gipalabay pa niya ang duha ka adlaw human siya masayod nga si Lazaro nagsakit. 7 Unya, miingon siya sa iyang mga tinun-an, “Dali kamo, mobalik na kita sa Judea.” 8 Miingon ang iyang mga tinun-an, “Magtutudlo, dili pa lang dugay nga gitinguhaan ka nga batohon sa mga Judio. Ug karon mobalik ka pa didto?” 9 Miingon si Jesus, “Dili ba may dose ka oras kon adlaw? Busa kon maglakaw ang tawo kon adlaw dili siya mapandol, tungod kay hayag pa. 10 Apan kon maglakaw siya kon gabii mapandol siya tungod kay ngitngit.”[a] 11 Human niini miingon pa gayod si Jesus, “Ang atong higala nga si Lazaro natulog. Apan adtoon ko siya ug pukawon.” 12 Mitubag ang iyang mga tinun-an, “Ginoo, kon natulog siya, mamaayo pa siya.” 13 Abi nilag tinuod nga natulog lang si Lazaro, apan ang buot ipasabot ni Jesus nga patay na si Lazaro. 14 Busa giingnan sila ni Jesus sa dayag, “Patay na si Lazaro. 15 Apan nagapasalamat ako nga wala ako didto kay alang kini sa inyong kaayohan, tungod kay may himuon ako aron madugangan pa gayod ang inyong pagtuo kanako. Dali, adtoon nato siya.” 16 Busa si Tomas nga gitawag nga Kaluha miingon sa iyang mga kauban, “Mokuyog na lang kita bisan kon patyon kita uban kaniya.”
Si Jesus mao ang Nagahatag ug Kinabuhi
17 Sa pag-abot ni Jesus sa Betania, nabalitaan niya nga upat na ka adlaw nga nalubong si Lazaro. 18 Ang Betania mga tulo lang ka kilometro gikan sa Jerusalem. 19 Busa daghang mga Judio nga taga-Jerusalem ang nangadto aron pagduyog sa kasub-anan ni Marta ug ni Maria sa pagkamatay sa ilang igsoon.
20 Sa pagkadungog ni Marta nga nagapadulong na si Jesus, migawas siya aron sa pagsugat kaniya, apan si Maria nagpabilin sa balay. 21 Pagkita ni Marta ug ni Jesus, miingon siya, “Ginoo, kon dinhi ka pa lang, wala unta mamatay ang akong igsoon. 22 Apan nahibalo ako nga bisan karon mohatag ang Dios kanimo sa bisan unsa nga imong pangayoon kaniya.” 23 Miingon si Jesus kaniya, “Mabanhaw ang imong igsoon.” 24 Mitubag si Marta, “Nahibalo ako nga mabanhaw siya sa kataposan nga adlaw kon banhawon na ang mga patay.” 25 Miingon si Jesus kaniya, “Ako ang nagabanhaw sa mga patay, ug ako usab ang nagahatag ug kinabuhi. Ang nagatuo kanako, bisan mamatay pa siya, mabuhi pag-usab. 26 Si bisan kinsa nga nagakinabuhi ug nagatuo kanako dili na mamatay bisan kanus-a. Motuo ka ba niini?” 27 Mitubag si Marta, “Oo, Ginoo! Nagatuo gayod ako nga ikaw mao ang Cristo, ang Anak sa Dios nga among gihulat nga moabot dinhi sa kalibotan.”
Mihilak si Jesus
28 Human mosulti si Marta niini, mibalik siya sa ilang balay ug gitawag niya ang iyang igsoon nga si Maria ug gihunghongan, “Ania na ang Magtutudlo ug gipatawag ka niya.” 29 Pagkadungog niadto ni Maria, mitindog siya ug midali paggawas ug miadto kang Jesus. 30 (Wala pa makasulod si Jesus sa lungsod sa Betania. Didto pa lang siya sa dapit diin siya gitagbo ni Marta.) 31 Pagkakita sa mga Judio nga nakigduyog sa kasub-anan ni Maria nga mitindog siya ug midali paggawas, gisunod nila siya, kay gipakaingon nilag moadto siya sa gilubngan aron mohilak didto.
32 Pag-abot ni Maria didto kang Jesus, miluhod siya ug miingon, “Ginoo, kon dinhi ka pa lang, wala unta mamatay ang akong igsoon.” 33 Pagkakita niya nga naghilak si Maria ug ingon man ang mga kauban niini nga mga Judio, natandog gayod ang iyang kasingkasing. 34 Nangutana dayon siya kanila, “Asa ninyo siya gilubong?” Mitubag sila, “Dali Ginoo, itudlo namo kanimo.” 35 Mihilak si Jesus. 36 Busa miingon ang mga Judio, “Nakita ninyo kon unsa kadako ang iyang paghigugma kang Lazaro!” 37 Apan ang uban miingon, “Dili ba giayo man niya ang mga mata sa buta? Nan, nganong wala man niya mapugngi ang kamatayon ni Lazaro?”
Gibanhaw ni Jesus si Lazaro
38 Natandog pag-usab ang kasingkasing ni Jesus. Ug miadto dayon sila didto sa gilubngan kang Lazaro. Usa kini ka langub nga gitakloban ug usa ka bato. 39 Pag-abot nila didto, miingon si Jesus, “Kuhaa ninyo ang bato.” Apan miingon si Marta nga igsoon sa namatay, “Ginoo, baho na siya karon, kay upat na ka adlaw nga siya gilubong!” 40 Miingon si Jesus kaniya, “Dili ba nga miingon man ako kanimo nga kon motuo ka, makita mo ang gahom sa Dios?” 41 Busa gikuha nila ang bato. Mihangad si Jesus sa langit ug miingon, “Amahan nagapasalamat ako kanimo tungod kay gipaminawan mo ako. 42 Nasayod ako nga kanunay ka nga nagapaminaw kanako, apan gisulti ko kini alang sa mga tawo nga ania karon nagaalirong kanako, aron motuo sila nga ikaw mao ang nagpadala kanako dinhi sa kalibotan.” 43 Human niyag sulti niini, misinggit siya, “Lazaro, gawas ngari!” 44 Ug migawas ang namatay nga si Lazaro nga ang iyang kamot ug tiil naputos pa sa mga panapton, ug ang iyang nawong naputos usab sa panyo. Miingon si Jesus kanila, “Badbari ninyo siya ug palakwa.”
Nagplano ang mga Kadagkoan sa mga Judio nga Patyon si Jesus
(Mat. 26:1-5; Mar. 14:1-2; Luc. 22:1-2)
45 Daghan sa mga Judio nga mibisita sa ilang Maria ang nakakita sa gibuhat ni Jesus ug mituo kaniya. 46 Apan ang uban kanila miadto sa mga Pariseo ug misugilon sa gibuhat ni Jesus. 47 Busa gitawag sa mga Pariseo ug sa mga kadagkoan sa mga pari ang tanan nga miyembro sa Korte sa mga Judio. Ug sa dihang nagtigom na sila, nagaingon sila, “Unsa man ang atong buhaton? Daghang mga milagro ang gibuhat niini nga tawo. 48 Kon pasagdan lang nato siya, ang tanan motuo na kaniya nga siya mao ang gipadala sa Dios nga mahimong hari sa Israel. Ug kon mahitabo kini, sulongon kita sa mga sundalo sa Roma ug gub-on nila ang atong templo ug ang atong tibuok nasod!” 49 Apan ang usa sa mga kauban nila nga si Caifas, nga pangulong pari niadtong tuiga, miingon, “Mga wala gayod kamoy alamag! 50 Wala ba kamo makahuna-huna nga mas maayo pa nga usa lang ka tawo ang mamatay alang sa atong nasod kaysa ang tibuok nasod ang mawala?” 51 Kining iyang gisulti dili iyang kaugalingon nga panghuna-huna, kondili ingon nga pangulong pari niadtong tuiga, natagna niya nga kinahanglan nga mamatay si Jesus alang sa mga Judio. 52 Ug dili lang alang kanila, kondili alang usab sa tanan nga anak sa Dios nga nagkatibulaag sa ubang lugar, aron matigom ug mahiusa silang tanan. 53 Sukad niadtong adlawa, nagplano na ang kadagkoan sa mga Judio sa pagpatay kang Jesus. 54 Busa wala na magpakita si Jesus didto sa mga lungsod sa mga Judio, kondili miadto siya sa lugar nga duol sa kamingawan, sa usa ka lungsod nga gitawag Efraim. Mipuyo siya didto uban sa iyang mga tinun-an.
55 Karon, hapit na ang pista sa mga Judio nga gitawag nga Pista sa Paglabay sa Anghel. Busa daghang mga tawo ang miadto sa Jerusalem aron nga sa dili pa moabot ang pista makapanghinlo na sila sa ilang kaugalingon sumala sa nabatasan sa ilang relihiyon. 56 Gipangita nila si Jesus didto sa templo apan wala nila makita. Busa nagpangutan-anay sila, “Sa inyong huna-huna, moanhi kaha siya dinhi sa pista?” 57 Niadto diay nga higayon nagsugo nang daan ang mga kadagkoan sa mga pari ug ang mga Pariseo nga si bisan kinsa nga masayod kon asa si Jesus kinahanglan mosulti kanila aron madakop nila siya.
