‘In the desert make the way of Adonai straight!’”[a]
24 Some of those who had been sent were P’rushim. 25 They asked him, “If you are neither the Messiah nor Eliyahu nor ‘the prophet,’ then why are you immersing people?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(A) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[a](B)
24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
