Job 7
Christian Standard Bible
7 Isn’t each person consigned to forced labor(A) on earth?
Are not his days like those of a hired worker?
2 Like a slave he longs for shade;
like a hired worker he waits for his pay.
3 So I have been made to inherit months of futility,
and troubled nights have been assigned to me.(B)
4 When I lie down I think,
“When will I get up?”
But the evening drags on endlessly,
and I toss and turn until dawn.
5 My flesh is clothed with maggots and encrusted with dirt.[a]
My skin forms scabs[b] and then oozes.(C)
6 My days pass more swiftly than a weaver’s shuttle;
they come to an end without hope.(D)
7 Remember that my life is but a breath.
My eye will never again see anything good.(E)
8 The eye of anyone who looks on me
will no longer see me.
Your eyes will look for me, but I will be gone.(F)
9 As a cloud fades away and vanishes,
so the one who goes down to Sheol(G) will never rise again.
10 He will never return to his house;
his hometown will no longer remember[c] him.(H)
11 Therefore I will not restrain my mouth.
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
12 Am I the sea[d](I) or a sea monster,(J)
that you keep me under guard?
13 When I say, “My bed will comfort me,
and my couch will ease my complaint,”
14 then you frighten me with dreams,
and terrify me with visions,(K)
15 so that I prefer strangling[e]—
death rather than life in this body.[f](L)
16 I give up! I will not live forever.
Leave me alone,(M) for my days are a breath.[g]
17 What is a mere human, that you think so highly of him
and pay so much attention to him?(N)
18 You inspect him every morning,
and put him to the test every moment.(O)
19 Will you ever look away from me,
or leave me alone long enough to swallow?[h]
20 If I have sinned, what have I done to you,
Watcher of humanity?
Why have you made me your target,(P)
so that I have become a burden to you?[i]
21 Why not forgive my sin
and pardon my iniquity?(Q)
For soon I will lie down in the grave.(R)
You will eagerly seek me, but I will be gone.(S)
Job 7
Legacy Standard Bible
7 “[a]Is not man (A)conscripted to labor on earth,
And are not his days like the days of (B)a hired man?
2 As a slave who pants for the shade,
And as a hired man who eagerly hopes for his wages,
3 So am I apportioned months of worthlessness,
And (C)nights of trouble are appointed me.
4 If I (D)lie down I say,
‘When shall I arise?’
But the twilight continues,
And I am saturated with tossing until dawn.
5 My (E)flesh is clothed with worms and a crust of dirt;
My skin scabs over and flows out again.
6 My days are (F)swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,
And come to an end (G)without hope.
7 “Remember that my life (H)is but wind;
My eye will (I)not again see good.
8 The (J)eye of him who sees me will behold me no longer;
Your eyes will be on me, but (K)I will not be.
9 A (L)cloud vanishes, and it is gone,
So (M)he who goes down to (N)Sheol does not come up.
10 He will not return again to his house,
Nor will (O)his place recognize him anymore.
11 “Indeed (P)I will not hold back my mouth;
I will speak in the distress of my spirit;
I will muse on the bitterness of my soul.
12 Am I the sea or (Q)the sea monster,
That You set a guard over me?
13 If I say, ‘(R)My bed will comfort me;
My couch will [b]ease my bitter musing,’
14 Then You frighten me with dreams
And terrify me by visions,
15 So that my soul would choose suffocation,
Death rather than my [c]pains.
16 I have (S)rejected everything; I will not live forever.
Leave me alone, (T)for my days are but a breath.
17 (U)What is man that You magnify him,
And that You set Your heart on him,
18 That (V)You [d]examine him every morning
And test him every moment?
19 [e](W)Will You never turn Your gaze away from me,
Nor let me alone until I swallow my spit?
20 (X)Have I sinned? What have I done to You,
O (Y)watcher of men?
Why have You set me as Your target,
So that I am a burden to myself?
21 Why then (Z)do You not forgive my transgression
And take away my iniquity?
For now I will (AA)lie down in the dust;
And You will seek me earnestly, (AB)but I will not be.”
