41 [a]¿Sacarás tú a Leviatán[b](A) con anzuelo,
o sujetarás con cuerda su lengua?
2 ¿Pondrás una soga[c] en su nariz,
o perforarás su quijada con gancho[d](B)?
3 ¿Acaso te hará muchas súplicas,
o te hablará palabras sumisas?
4 ¿Hará un pacto contigo?
¿Lo tomarás como siervo para siempre?
5 ¿Jugarás con él como con un pájaro,
o lo atarás para tus doncellas?
6 ¿Traficarán con él los comerciantes[e]?
¿Lo repartirán entre los mercaderes?
7 ¿Podrás llenar su piel de arpones,
o de lanzas de pescar su cabeza?
8 Pon tu mano[f] sobre él;
te acordarás de la batalla y no lo volverás a hacer[g].
9 [h]He aquí, falsa es tu[i] esperanza;
con solo verlo serás[j] derribado.
10 Nadie hay tan audaz que lo despierte(C);
¿quién, pues, podrá estar delante de mí?
11 ¿Quién me ha dado[k] algo para que yo se lo restituya(D)?
Cuanto existe debajo de todo el cielo es mío(E).
12 No dejaré de hablar de sus miembros,
ni de su gran poder, ni de su agraciada figura.
13 ¿Quién lo desnudará de su armadura exterior[l]?
¿Quién penetrará su doble malla[m]?
14 ¿Quién abrirá las puertas de sus fauces[n]?
Alrededor de sus dientes hay terror.
15 Sus fuertes escamas[o] son su orgullo,
cerradas como con apretado sello.
16 La una está tan cerca de la otra
que el aire no puede penetrar entre ellas.
17 Unidas están una a la otra;
se traban entre sí y no pueden separarse.
18 Sus estornudos dan destellos de luz,
y sus ojos son como los párpados del alba(F).
19 De su boca salen antorchas,
chispas de fuego saltan.
20 De sus narices sale humo,
como de una olla que hierve sobre[p] juncos encendidos.
21 Su aliento enciende carbones,
y una llama sale de su boca.
22 En su cuello reside el poder,
y salta el desaliento delante de él.
23 Unidos están los pliegues de su carne,
firmes están en él e inamovibles.
24 Su corazón es duro como piedra,
duro como piedra de molino.
25 Cuando él se levanta, los poderosos[q] tiemblan;
a causa del estruendo quedan confundidos.
26 La espada que lo alcance no puede prevalecer,
ni la lanza, el dardo, o la jabalina.
27 Estima el hierro como paja,
el bronce como madera carcomida.
28 No lo hace huir la flecha[r];
en hojarasca se convierten para él las piedras de la honda.
29 Como hojarasca son estimadas las mazas;
se ríe del blandir de la jabalina.
30 Por debajo[s] tiene como tiestos puntiagudos;
se extiende[t] como trillo sobre el lodo.
31 Hace hervir las profundidades como olla;
hace el mar como redoma de ungüento.
32 Detrás de sí hace brillar una estela;
se diría que el abismo es canoso.
33 Nada en la tierra[u] es semejante a él(G),
que fue hecho sin temor.
34 [v]Desafía[w] a todo ser altivo;
él es rey sobre todos los hijos de orgullo(H).

41 »¿Acaso puedes pescar a Leviatán(A) con anzuelo?
¿Puedes atarle la lengua con una simple cuerda?
2 ¿Puedes atarle una soga en la nariz,
y horadarle con ganchos la quijada?
3 ¿Acaso crees que te pedirá clemencia,
o que con palabras dulces te pedirá su libertad?
4 ¿Crees que se comprometerá contigo
a ser tu siervo para siempre?
5 ¿Podrás jugar con él, como con un ave,
y ponerle un lazo para que se diviertan tus hijas?
6 ¿Ofrecerás con él un banquete para tus amigos?
¿Podrán los carniceros descuartizarlo y venderlo?
7 ¿Podrás cortar con cuchillo su dura piel?
¿Podrás clavarle un arpón en la cabeza?
8 Haz el intento siquiera de tocarlo:
¡será una batalla memorable, que nunca más repetirás!
9 »En vano espera quien pretenda domarlo;
de sólo verlo cerca, el más valiente tiembla.
10 No hay nadie tan osado que lo quiera despertar;
entonces, ¿quién podría enfrentarse a mí?
11 ¿Quién me ha dado algo, para que se lo devuelva?(B)
¡Mío es todo lo que hay debajo de los cielos!
12 »Aún me falta decir algo acerca de sus miembros,
de su gran poder y de su elegante presencia.
13 ¿Hay alguien capaz de hacerle frente?
¿Alguien que se arme de valor y le coloque un freno?
14 ¿Quién podrá abrirle esas potentes quijadas,
sin que se espante al ver sus filosos colmillos?
15 Está orgullosamente revestido de duros escudos,
cuyo cerrado tejido resguarda su cuerpo.
16 Tan estrechamente unidos están unos con otros,
que ni el viento más fino los puede atravesar.
17 Cada escudo se entrelaza con el otro;
están trabados entre sí, y no se pueden separar.
18 Cuando esta bestia resopla, lanza fuego,
y sus ojos brillan como la luz del amanecer.
19 De su hocico brotan lenguas de fuego;
¡chispas de lumbre salen disparadas!
20 Por su trompa lanza humo como chimenea,
¡despide vapor como una olla en el fuego!
21 Con sus resoplidos prende fuego a los carbones,
pues brama y lanza fuego por sus fauces.
22 La fuerza de su cuerpo está en su cuello;
cuando ataca, cunde el miedo como polvo.
23 Su piel parece blanda, pero es dura;
es tan firme y resistente como el hierro.
24 Su corazón es duro como una roca,
rígido como una piedra de molino.
25 Aún los más valientes se le enfrentan temerosos,
y llenos de miedo se rinden ante él.
26 Si alguno le da alcance, con la espada no lo hiere,
ni con lanza ni flechas, ni su escudo lo protege.
27 El hierro es para él como la paja,
y el bronce es como un tronco podrido.
28 No le espantan las flechas que sobre él caen,
y las piedras lanzadas con honda le son como paja.
29 Para él, las armas son como hojas secas,
y el silbido de la jabalina le resulta divertido.
30 Su pecho está cubierto de agudas escamas,
y al arrastrarse va abriendo surcos en el fango.
31 Si se lanza al mar, éste hierve,
y brotan candentes burbujas de agua.
32 Tras de sí va dejando una brillante estela,
¡cabellera de plata se torna la blanca espuma!
33 Nada en la tierra se le puede comparar;
es un monstruo que a nada le teme.
34 A los poderosos los mira con desprecio;
¡es el rey de todos los soberbios!»

or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord through its nose(C)
or pierce its jaw with a hook?(D)
3 Will it keep begging you for mercy?(E)
Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will it make an agreement with you
for you to take it as your slave for life?(F)
5 Can you make a pet of it like a bird
or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Will traders barter for it?
Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7 Can you fill its hide with harpoons
or its head with fishing spears?(G)
8 If you lay a hand on it,
you will remember the struggle and never do it again!(H)
9 Any hope of subduing it is false;
the mere sight of it is overpowering.(I)
10 No one is fierce enough to rouse it.(J)
Who then is able to stand against me?(K)
11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay?(L)
Everything under heaven belongs to me.(M)
12 “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs,(N)
its strength(O) and its graceful form.
13 Who can strip off its outer coat?
Who can penetrate its double coat of armor[b]?(P)
14 Who dares open the doors of its mouth,(Q)
ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 Its back has[c] rows of shields
tightly sealed together;(R)
16 each is so close to the next
that no air can pass between.
17 They are joined fast to one another;
they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 Its snorting throws out flashes of light;
its eyes are like the rays of dawn.(S)
19 Flames(T) stream from its mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke pours from its nostrils(U)
as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 Its breath(V) sets coals ablaze,
and flames dart from its mouth.(W)
22 Strength(X) resides in its neck;
dismay goes before it.
23 The folds of its flesh are tightly joined;
they are firm and immovable.
24 Its chest is hard as rock,
hard as a lower millstone.(Y)
25 When it rises up, the mighty are terrified;(Z)
they retreat before its thrashing.(AA)
26 The sword that reaches it has no effect,
nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.(AB)
27 Iron it treats like straw(AC)
and bronze like rotten wood.
28 Arrows do not make it flee;(AD)
slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 A club seems to it but a piece of straw;(AE)
it laughs(AF) at the rattling of the lance.
30 Its undersides are jagged potsherds,
leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.(AG)
31 It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron(AH)

32 It leaves a glistening wake behind it;
one would think the deep had white hair.
33 Nothing on earth is its equal(AJ)—
a creature without fear.

41 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?
2 Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?
3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?
4 Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
5 Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
7 Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?
8 Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?
14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
15 His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
16 One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
18 By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
20 Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.
21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
22 In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
23 The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
24 His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
25 When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.
26 The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
27 He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.
29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.
31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.
33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
34 He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
