God Speaks Now to Job

38 Then the Lord (A)answered Job from the whirlwind and said,

“Who is this who (B)darkens the divine plan
By words without knowledge?
Now [a](C)tighten the belt on your waist like a man,
And (D)I shall ask you, and you inform Me!
Where were you (E)when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you [b]have understanding,
Who set its (F)measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the measuring line over it?
On what (G)were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
When the morning stars sang together
And all the (H)sons of God shouted for joy?

“Or who (I)enclosed the sea with doors
When it went out from the womb, bursting forth;
When I made a cloud its garment,
And thick darkness its swaddling bands,
10 And I [c](J)placed boundaries on it
And set a bolt and doors,
11 And I said, ‘As far as this point you shall come, but no farther;
And here your proud waves shall stop’?

God’s Mighty Power

12 “Have you [d]ever in your life commanded the morning,
And made the dawn know its place,
13 So that it would take hold of (K)the ends of the earth,
And (L)the wicked would be shaken off from it?
14 It is changed like clay under the seal;
And they stand out like a garment.
15 (M)Their light is withheld from the wicked,
And the (N)uplifted arm is broken.

16 “Have you entered (O)the springs of the sea,
And walked [e]in the depth of the ocean?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
And have you seen the gates of (P)deep darkness?
18 Have you understood the [f]expanse of (Q)the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this.

19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And darkness, where is its place,
20 That you would take it to (R)its territory,
And discern the paths to its [g]home?
21 You know, for (S)you were born then,
And the number of your days is great!
22 Have you entered the storehouses (T)of the snow,
And have you seen the storehouses of the (U)hail,
23 Which I have reserved for a time of distress,
For a day of war and battle?
24 Where is the way that (V)the light is divided,
And the east wind scattered on the earth?

25 “Who has split open a channel for the flood,
And a way for the thunderbolt,
26 To bring (W)rain on a land without [h]people,
On a desert without a person in it,
27 To (X)satisfy the waste and desolate land,
And to make the [i]seeds of grass to sprout?
28 Does (Y)the rain have a father?
Or who has fathered the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb has come the (Z)ice?
And the frost of heaven, who has given it birth?
30 Water [j]becomes hard like stone,
And the surface of the deep is imprisoned.

31 “Can you tie up the chains of the (AA)Pleiades,
Or untie the cords of Orion?
32 Can you bring out a [k]constellation in its season,
And guide the Bear with her [l]satellites?
33 Do you know the (AB)ordinances of the heavens,
Or do you establish their rule over the earth?

34 “Can you raise your voice to the clouds,
So that an (AC)abundance of water will cover you?
35 Can you (AD)send flashes of lightning, so that they may go
And say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who has (AE)put wisdom in the innermost being,
Or given (AF)understanding to the [m]mind?
37 Who can count the clouds by wisdom,
And (AG)pour out the water jars of the heavens,
38 When the dust hardens into a mass
And the clods stick together?

39 “Can you hunt the (AH)prey for the lioness,
Or satisfy the appetite of young lions,
40 When they (AI)crouch in their hiding places,
And lie in wait in their lair?
41 Who prepares [n]feed for (AJ)the raven
When its young cry to God,
And wander about without food?

38 ¶ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,

Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

Now gird up thy loins like a man; for I will enquire of thee, and answer thou me.

¶ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Cause me to know, if thou hast understanding.

Who ordered its dimensions, if thou knowest? Or who has stretched the line upon it?

Upon what are its foundations founded? Or who laid its corner stone;

when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

When I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness a swaddling band for it,

10 and established my decree upon it, and set bars and doors,

11 and said, Thou shalt come unto here, but no further; and there shall the pride of thy waves be stayed.

12 ¶ Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days? Hast thou shown the dayspring its place,

13 that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

14 It is transformed as clay to the seal and then stands as a garment;

15 but the light of the wicked is taken from them, and the high arm is broken.

16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked searching out the deep?

17 Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? Or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? Declare if thou knowest it all.

19 Where is the way to the habitation of the light, and where is the place of the darkness?

20 If thou shalt take it in its borders, and if thou should understand the paths to its house?

21 If thou didst know when thou wast to be born or if the number of thy days was to be great?

22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow, and hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

23 which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

24 By what way is the light divided; from where is the east wind scattered upon the earth?

25 ¶ Who has divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters or a way for the lightning of thunder,

26 to cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man;

27 to satisfy the desolate and waste ground and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

28 Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of the dew?

29 Out of whose womb came the ice, and the hoary frost of heaven, who has begotten it?

30 The waters harden as stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

31 Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

32 Canst thou bring forth the signs of the heavens in their season, or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?

33 Dost thou know the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou use its power in the earth?

34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

35 Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?

36 Who put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who gave intelligence to understanding?

37 Who declared the heavens in wisdom? Or who can stay the bottles of heaven

38 when the dust hardens and the clods cleave fast together?

39 Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion or fill the appetite of the young lions,

40 when they crouch in their dens and abide in their lairs to lie in wait?

41 Who provided food for the raven; when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of food?

38 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:

“Why are you using your ignorance to deny my providence? Now get ready to fight, for I am going to demand some answers from you, and you must reply.

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Do you know how its dimensions were determined, and who did the surveying? 6-7 What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

8-9 “Who decreed the boundaries of the seas when they gushed from the depths? Who clothed them with clouds and thick darkness 10 and barred them by limiting their shores, 11 and said, ‘Thus far and no farther shall you come, and here shall your proud waves stop’?

12 “Have you ever once commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east? 13 Have you ever told the daylight to spread to the ends of the earth, to end the night’s wickedness? 14 Have you ever robed the dawn in red, 15 and disturbed the haunts of wicked men, and stopped the arm raised to strike?

16 “Have you explored the springs from which the seas come, or walked in the sources of their depths? 17-18 Has the location of the gates of death been revealed to you? Do you realize the extent of the earth? Tell me about it if you know! 19 Where does the light come from, and how do you get there? Or tell me about the darkness. Where does it come from? 20 Can you find its boundaries, or go to its source? 21 But of course you know all this! For you were born before it was all created, and you are so very experienced!

22-23 “Have you visited the treasuries of the snow, or seen where hail is made and stored? For I have reserved it for the time when I will need it in war. 24 Where is the path to the distribution point of light? Where is the home of the east wind? 25-27 Who dug the valleys for the torrents of rain? Who laid out the path for the lightning, causing the rain to fall upon the barren deserts, so that the parched and barren ground is satisfied with water and tender grass springs up?

28 “Has the rain a father? Where does dew come from? 29 Who is the mother of the ice and frost? 30 For the water changes and turns to ice as hard as rock.

31 “Can you hold back the stars? Can you restrain Orion or Pleiades? 32 Can you ensure the proper sequence of the seasons, or guide the constellation of the Bear with her satellites across the heavens? 33 Do you know the laws of the universe and how the heavens influence the earth? 34 Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain? 35 Can you make lightning appear and cause it to strike as you direct it?

36 “Who gives intuition and instinct?[a] 37-38 Who is wise enough to number all the clouds? Who can tilt the water jars of heaven, when everything is dust and clods? 39-40 Can you stalk prey like a lioness, to satisfy the young lions’ appetites as they lie in their dens or lie in wait in the jungle? 41 Who provides for the ravens when their young cry out to God as they try to struggle up from their nest in hunger?
