Dios interpela a Job
38 Entonces el Señor le habló a Job de en medio de la tempestad.
El Señor
2 ¿Quién eres tú para dudar de mi providencia
y mostrar con tus palabras tu ignorancia?
3 Muéstrame ahora tu valentía,
y respóndeme a estas preguntas:
4 ¿Dónde estabas cuando yo afirmé la tierra?
¡Dímelo, si de veras sabes tanto!
5 ¿Sabes quién decidió cuánto habría de medir,
y quién fue el arquitecto que la hizo?
6 ¿Sobre qué descansan sus cimientos?
¿Quién le puso la piedra principal de apoyo,
7 mientras cantaban a coro las estrellas de la aurora
entre la alegría de mis servidores celestiales?
8 Cuando el mar brotó del seno de la tierra,
¿quién le puso compuertas para contenerlo?
9 Yo le di una nube por vestido
y la niebla por pañales.
10 Yo le puse un límite al mar
y cerré con llave sus compuertas.
11 Y le dije: «Llegarás hasta aquí,
y de aquí no pasarás;
aquí se romperán tus olas arrogantes.»
12 ¿Alguna vez en tu vida has dado órdenes
de que salga la aurora y amanezca el día?
13 ¿Y de que la luz se difunda por la tierra
y los malvados vayan a esconderse?
14 Entonces aparecen los relieves de la tierra y se tiñen de color como un vestido;
15 se les niega la luz a los malvados
y se pone fin a su amenaza.
16 ¿Has visitado el misterioso abismo
donde tiene sus fuentes el océano?
17 ¿Has visto dónde están las puertas
del tenebroso reino de la muerte?
18 ¿Tienes idea de la anchura de la tierra?
¡Dímelo, si en verdad lo sabes todo!
19 ¿En dónde están guardadas
la luz y las tinieblas?
20 ¿Sabes hacerlas llegar hasta el último rincón
y que luego regresen a su casa?
21 ¡Debes de saberlo, pues tienes tantos años
que para entonces ya habrías nacido!
22 ¿Has visitado los depósitos
donde guardo la nieve y el granizo
23 para enviarlos en tiempos de desgracia,
en tiempos de batallas y de guerra?
24 ¿Qué caminos sigue la luz al repartirse?
¿Cómo se extiende el viento del este sobre el mundo?
25 ¿Quién abre una salida al aguacero
y señala el camino a la tormenta,
26 para que llueva en el desierto,
en lugares donde nadie vive,
27 para que riegue la tierra desolada
y haga brotar la hierba?
28 ¿Quién es el padre de la lluvia y del rocío?
29 ¿Quién es la madre del hielo y de la escarcha?
30 ¿Quién vuelve el agua dura como la piedra
y congela la superficie del océano?
31 ¿Eres tú quien mantiene juntas a las Pléyades
y separadas las estrellas de Orión?
32 ¿Eres tú quien saca a su hora al lucero de la mañana?
¿Eres tú quien guía a las estrellas
de la Osa Mayor y de la Osa Menor?
33 ¿Conoces tú las leyes que gobiernan el cielo?
¿Eres tú quien aplica esas leyes en la tierra?
34 ¿Puedes dar órdenes a las nubes
de que te inunden con agua?
35 Si mandas al rayo que vaya a alguna parte,
¿acaso te responde: «Aquí estoy, a tus órdenes»?
36 ¿Quién dio instinto inteligente
a aves como el ibis o el gallo?
37 ¿Quién es tan sabio que sepa cuántas nubes hay?
¿Quién puede vaciarlas para que den su lluvia,
38 para que el polvo se convierta en barro
y se peguen los terrones entre sí?
39 ¿Eres tú quien busca presa para las leonas,
para que coman sus cachorros hasta llenarse,
40 cuando se esconden en su guarida
o se ponen al acecho en la maleza?
41 ¿Quién da de comer a los cuervos,
cuando sus crías andan buscando comida
y con grandes chillidos me la piden?

The Lord’s Challenge to Job
38 Then the Lord responded to Job out of a violent storm. He said:
2 Who is this who spreads darkness over my plans
with his ignorant words?
3 Get ready for action[a] like a man!
Then I will ask you questions,
and you will inform me.
4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you understand anything about it.
5 Who determined its dimensions?
I am sure you know.
Who stretched out the surveying line over it?
6 What supports its foundation?
Who set its cornerstone in place,
7 when the morning stars sang loud songs together,
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?[b]
8 Who locked up the sea behind doors
when it burst out of the womb?
9 When I clothed the sea with clouds,
when I wrapped it with thick darkness as its swaddling cloths,
10 when I broke its power with my decree,
when I locked it up behind barred, double doors,
11 I said, “You may come this far, but no farther.
Here is the barrier for your proud waves.”
12 Have you ever in all your days given a command to the morning?
Have you ever set a time for the sun to rise,
13 so it may grab the earth by its edges
and shake the wicked out of it?
14 The earth’s shapes become visible like designs impressed on clay,
and its decorations can be seen like those on a garment.
15 Their light is withheld from the wicked,
and an uplifted arm is broken.
16 Have you ever traveled to the sources of the sea
or walked around in the dark depths of the ocean?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you?
Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?[c]
18 Do you comprehend the vast expanses of the earth?
Tell me, if you know all this.
19 How can someone get to the dwelling of light?
Where is the place for darkness?
20 Could you lead it to its property?
Do you know the way to its house?
21 You must know that, since you were born before it,
and you have lived for so many days!
22 Have you visited the warehouses where the snow is kept?
Have you seen the warehouses[d] where the hail is stored?
23 I have reserved them for troubled times,
for days of battle and war.
24 What is the way to the place where the lightning divides,[e]
where the east wind is scattered over the earth?
25 Who has excavated a channel for the floodwaters
and a road for the rolling thunder?
26 They bring rain to lands where no one lives,
to a wilderness without a person in it.
27 The rain satisfies the wilderness and wasteland
and causes the dry ground to produce green plants.
28 Does the rain have a father?
Who is the father of the drops of dew?
29 Whose womb produces the ice?
Who gives birth to the heavy frost from the sky?
30 The water is disguised as stone,
and the surface of the deep is trapped under ice.
31 Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades,
or loosen the belt of Orion?
32 Can you lead out the constellations at the right season
and guide the Bear with her cubs?[f]
33 Do you know the laws that govern the skies?
Can you establish God’s rule on earth?
34 Can you raise your voice to the clouds,
so that a flood of water submerges you?
35 Can you unleash the lightning bolts,
so that they come and say to you, “Here we are”?
36 Who has placed wisdom in the human heart
and given understanding to the mind?[g]
37 Who has the wisdom to count the clouds
and to empty the water jars of the sky,
38 when the loose dust has been poured into molds to harden,
and the clods of dirt are cemented together?
39 Can you hunt prey for a lioness?
Can you satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
40 when they crouch in their dens,
or they lie in wait in the thicket?
41 Who prepares its provisions for the raven,
when its young are screaming to God,
while they thrash around in the nest waiting for food?

- Job 38:7 It is not certain whether the terms morning stars and sons of God refer to stars, angels, or both.
- Job 38:17 The scribes of the Hebrew text consistently spell this word as shadow of death. Many recent translations alter the spelling to a very similar word that means deep darkness. The EHV in many cases retains the traditional reading.

- Job 38:32 The identification of these constellations is uncertain.
- Job 38:36 The meanings of the words translated heart and mind are unknown. Some interpret them as names of birds, the ibis and rooster. Others interpret them as names of celestial phenomena, meteors or clouds.
