Fracaso de los tres sabios amigos
34 Elihú continuó con su discurso:
2 Escuchad, sabios, mis palabras;
prestadme atención los doctos,
3 pues el oído distingue las palabras
lo mismo que la boca los sabores.
4 Pongámonos de acuerdo en lo que es justo;
aclaremos entre nosotros lo que es bueno.
5 Job ha dicho: “Soy inocente,
pero Dios anula mi derecho.
6 ¿Voy a mentir sobre mi caso?
Me hieren de muerte sin culpa”.
7 ¿Hay por ventura alguien como Job,
que beba sarcasmos como agua?
8 Anda acompañado de malhechores,
busca la sociedad de los malvados,
9 y dice: “Nada se consigue
buscando el favor de Dios”.
10 Escuchadme, quienes sois sensatos:
¡Lejos de Dios la maldad,
lejos del Todopoderoso la injusticia!
11 Paga a cada uno según sus acciones,
trata a los humanos según su conducta.
12 Está claro que Dios no actúa con maldad,
que el Todopoderoso no pervierte el derecho.
13 ¿Quién le encargó del cuidado de la tierra
y le confió la custodia del universo?
14 Si decidiera por propia voluntad
retirar su espíritu y su aliento,
15 perecerían todos los vivientes,
volverían los humanos al polvo.
16 Si tienes conocimiento, escucha;
presta atención a mis palabras.
17 ¿Podría gobernar quien odia la justicia?
¿Vas a condenar al que es justo y poderoso,
18 al que puede llamar a un rey “canalla”
o tratar de “bandidos” a los nobles?
19 ¿Al que no tiene preferencia por los príncipes,
ni favorece al grande contra el débil,
porque todos han sido creados por él?
20 Todos mueren de pronto, a medianoche;
se alborota la gente y desaparecen;
el tirano es derribado sin esfuerzo.
21 Dios vigila la conducta humana,
controla cualquier comportamiento;
22 no hay sombra ni densa tiniebla
que pueda ocultar al malvado.
23 No es el ser humano quien decide
cuándo ha de comparecer ante el Dios
24 que destruye a los poderosos sin indagar
y establece a otros en su lugar.
25 Como Dios conoce bien sus acciones,
de noche los trastorna y destruye;
26 les paga su maldad azotándolos
en un lugar donde la gente los vea,
27 por haberle sido desleales,
por haber ignorado sus designios,
28 provocando ante él el grito del pobre,
haciéndole oír el gemido del necesitado.
29 Si Dios guarda silencio,
¿quién condenará al malvado?
Si oculta su rostro, ¿quién podrá verlo?
Pero él vigila a personas y países,
30 para evitar que prevalezca un impío
y someta al pueblo a su capricho.
31 Si alguien reconoce ante Dios:
“Me he enorgullecido, no lo haré más;
32 enséñame tú lo que yo no puedo ver;
si algo malo he hecho, no reincidiré”,
33 ¿debería [Dios] castigar, en tu opinión,
cuando tú rechazas su criterio?
Eres tú quien debe decidir, no yo;
demuestra todo lo que sabes.
34 Si la gente sensata me escuchara,
si los sabios me oyesen, dirían:
35 “Job no argumenta con sensatez;
sus palabras carecen de sentido.
36 Debería ser examinado hasta el extremo,
pues responde igual que los malvados;
37 se empeña en seguir pecando,
se burla de nosotros,
multiplica sus palabras contra Dios”.

34 También dijo Eliú:
2 «Ustedes los sabios, escuchen mis palabras;
ustedes los instruidos, préstenme atención.
3 El oído saborea las palabras,
como el paladar prueba la comida.
4 Procuremos discernir juntos lo que es justo
y aprender lo que es bueno.
5 »Job alega: “Soy inocente,
pero Dios se niega a hacerme justicia.
6 Soy considerado mentiroso,
a pesar de que soy justo;
sus flechas me hieren de muerte,
a pesar de que no he pecado”.
7 ¿Dónde hay alguien como Job,
que tiene el sarcasmo a flor de labios?[a]
8 Le encanta hacer amistad con los malhechores
y andar en compañía de los malvados.
9 ¡Y nos alega que ningún provecho saca el hombre
tratando de agradar a Dios!
10 »Escúchenme, hombres entendidos:
¡Es inconcebible que Dios haga lo malo,
que el Todopoderoso cometa injusticias!
11 Dios paga al hombre según sus obras;
lo trata como se merece.
12 ¡Ni pensar que Dios actúe con maldad!
¡El Todopoderoso no pervierte la justicia!
13 ¿Quién le dio poder sobre la tierra?
¿Quién lo puso a cargo de todo el mundo?
14 Si pensara en retirarnos su espíritu,
en quitarnos su aliento de vida,
15 todo el género humano perecería,
¡la humanidad entera volvería a ser polvo!
16 »Escucha esto, si eres entendido;
presta atención a lo que digo.
17 ¿Puede acaso gobernar quien detesta la justicia?
¿Condenarás entonces al Dios justo y poderoso?
18 ¿Al que dice a los reyes: “no valen nada”
y a los nobles, “malvados”?
19 Dios no se muestra parcial con los príncipes
ni favorece a los ricos más que a los pobres.
¡Unos y otros son obra de sus manos!
20 Mueren de pronto, en medio de la noche;
la gente se estremece y muere;
los poderosos son derrocados
sin intervención humana.
21 »Los ojos de Dios ven los caminos del hombre;
él vigila cada uno de sus pasos.
22 No hay lugares oscuros ni sombras profundas
que puedan esconder a los malhechores.
23 Dios no tiene que examinarlos
para someterlos a juicio.
24 No tiene que indagar para derrocar a los poderosos
y sustituirlos por otros.
25 Dios toma nota de todo lo que hacen;
por la noche los derroca y quedan aplastados;
26 los castiga por su maldad
para escarmiento de todos,[b]
27 pues dejaron de seguirlo
y no tomaron en cuenta sus caminos.
28 Hicieron llegar a su presencia
el clamor de los pobres y necesitados,
y Dios lo escuchó.
29 ¿Pero quién puede condenarlo
si él decide guardar silencio?
¿Quién puede verlo si oculta su rostro?
Él está por encima de pueblos y personas,
30 para que no reinen los impíos
ni tiendan trampas a su pueblo.
31 »Supongamos que le dijeras:
“Soy culpable; no volveré a ofenderte.
32 Enséñame lo que no alcanzo a percibir;
si he cometido algo malo, no volveré a hacerlo”.
33 ¿Tendría Dios que recompensarte
como tú quieres que lo haga,
aunque lo hayas rechazado?
No seré yo quien lo decida, sino tú,
así que expresa lo que piensas.
34 »Que me digan los sabios
y ustedes los entendidos que me escuchan:
35 “Job no sabe lo que dice;
en sus palabras no hay inteligencia”.
36 ¡Que sea Job examinado al máximo,
pues como un malvado ha respondido!
37 A su pecado ha añadido rebeldía;
en nuestra propia cara se ha burlado de nosotros
y se ha excedido en sus palabras contra Dios».

34 Then Elihu continued and said,
2 “Hear my words, you wise men,
And listen to me, you who understand.
3 For (A)the ear tests words
As the palate tastes food.
4 Let us choose for ourselves what is right;
Let us understand among ourselves what is good.
5 For Job has said, ‘(B)I am righteous,
But (C)God has taken away my right;
6 [a]Should I lie about my right?
My [b](D)wound is incurable, though I am without wrongdoing.’
7 What man is like Job,
Who (E)drinks up derision like water,
8 Who goes (F)in company with the workers of injustice,
And walks with wicked people?
9 For he has said, ‘(G)It is of no use to a man
When he becomes friends with God.’
10 “Therefore, listen to me, you men of understanding.
Far be it from God to (H)do evil,
And from the Almighty to do wrong.
11 For He repays a person for (I)his work,
And lets things happen in correspondence to a man’s [c]behavior.
12 (J)God certainly will not act wickedly,
And the Almighty will not pervert justice.
13 Who (K)gave Him authority over the earth?
And who (L)has placed the whole world on Him?
14 If He were to [d]determine to do so,
If He were to (M)gather His [e]spirit and His breath to Himself,
15 [f](N)Humanity would perish together,
And mankind would (O)return to dust.
16 “But if you have understanding, hear this;
Listen to the sound of my words.
17 Shall (P)one who hates justice rule?
And (Q)will you condemn the righteous mighty One,
18 Who says to a king, ‘You worthless one,’
To nobles, ‘You wicked one’;
19 Who shows no (R)partiality to the prominent,
Nor regards the rich as above the poor,
Since they are all the (S)work of His hands?
20 In a moment they die, and (T)at midnight
People are shaken and pass away,
And (U)the powerful are taken away without a hand.
21 “For (V)His eyes are upon the ways of a person,
And He sees all his steps.
22 There is (W)no darkness or deep shadow
Where the workers of injustice can hide themselves.
23 For He does not (X)need to consider a person further,
That he should go before God in judgment.
24 He breaks in pieces the (Y)mighty without investigation,
And sets others in their place.
25 Therefore He (Z)knows their deeds,
And (AA)He overthrows them in the night,
And they are crushed.
26 He (AB)strikes them like the wicked
[g]In a public place,
27 Because they (AC)turned aside from following Him,
And (AD)had no regard for any of His ways,
28 So that they caused (AE)the cry of the poor to come to Him,
And that He would (AF)hear the cry of the afflicted—
29 When He keeps quiet, who can condemn?
And when He hides His face, who then can look at Him,
That is, regarding both nation and a person?—
30 So that (AG)godless people would not rule,
Nor be snares for the people.
31 “For has anyone said to God,
‘I have endured punishment;
I will not offend anymore;
32 Teach me what I do not see;
If I have (AH)done wrong,
I will not do it again’?
33 Shall God (AI)repay on your terms, because you have rejected His?
For you must choose, and not I;
Therefore declare what you know.
34 Men of understanding will say to me,
And a wise man who hears me,
35 ‘Job (AJ)speaks without knowledge,
And his words are without wisdom.
36 Oh that Job were tested [h]to the limit,
Because [i]he answers (AK)like sinners.
37 For he adds (AL)rebellion to his sin;
He (AM)claps his hands among us,
And multiplies his words against God.’”

5 “Job says, ‘I am innocent,(E)
but God denies me justice.(F)
6 Although I am right,
I am considered a liar;(G)
although I am guiltless,(H)
his arrow inflicts an incurable wound.’(I)
7 Is there anyone like Job,
who drinks scorn like water?(J)
8 He keeps company with evildoers;
he associates with the wicked.(K)
9 For he says, ‘There is no profit
in trying to please God.’(L)
10 “So listen to me,(M) you men of understanding.(N)

from the Almighty to do wrong.(P)
11 He repays everyone for what they have done;(Q)
he brings on them what their conduct deserves.(R)
12 It is unthinkable that God would do wrong,(S)
that the Almighty would pervert justice.(T)
13 Who appointed(U) him over the earth?
Who put him in charge of the whole world?(V)
14 If it were his intention
and he withdrew his spirit[a](W) and breath,(X)
15 all humanity would perish(Y) together
and mankind would return to the dust.(Z)
16 “If you have understanding,(AA) hear this;
listen to what I say.(AB)
17 Can someone who hates justice govern?(AC)
Will you condemn the just and mighty One?(AD)
18 Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’
and to nobles,(AE) ‘You are wicked,’(AF)
19 who shows no partiality(AG) to princes
and does not favor the rich over the poor,(AH)
for they are all the work of his hands?(AI)
20 They die in an instant, in the middle of the night;(AJ)
the people are shaken and they pass away;
the mighty are removed without human hand.(AK)
21 “His eyes are on the ways of mortals;(AL)
he sees their every step.(AM)
22 There is no deep shadow,(AN) no utter darkness,(AO)
where evildoers can hide.(AP)
23 God has no need to examine people further,(AQ)
that they should come before him for judgment.(AR)
24 Without inquiry he shatters(AS) the mighty(AT)
and sets up others in their place.(AU)
25 Because he takes note of their deeds,(AV)
he overthrows them in the night(AW) and they are crushed.(AX)
26 He punishes them for their wickedness(AY)
where everyone can see them,
27 because they turned from following him(AZ)
and had no regard for any of his ways.(BA)
28 They caused the cry of the poor to come before him,
so that he heard the cry of the needy.(BB)
29 But if he remains silent,(BC) who can condemn him?(BD)
If he hides his face,(BE) who can see him?
Yet he is over individual and nation alike,(BF)
30 to keep the godless(BG) from ruling,(BH)
from laying snares for the people.(BI)
31 “Suppose someone says to God,
‘I am guilty(BJ) but will offend no more.
32 Teach me what I cannot see;(BK)
if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’(BL)
33 Should God then reward you on your terms,
when you refuse to repent?(BM)
You must decide, not I;
so tell me what you know.
34 “Men of understanding declare,
wise men who hear me say to me,
35 ‘Job speaks without knowledge;(BN)
his words lack insight.’(BO)
36 Oh, that Job might be tested to the utmost
for answering like a wicked man!(BP)
37 To his sin he adds rebellion;
scornfully he claps his hands(BQ) among us
and multiplies his words(BR) against God.”(BS)
