29 Job continuó su discurso y dijo:
2 —¡Quién me concediese ser
como en los meses pasados,
como en los días cuando
Dios me guardaba!
3 Entonces él hacía resplandecer
su lámpara sobre mi cabeza,
y a su luz yo caminaba en la oscuridad.
4 Así fue en los días de mi vigor[a]. cuando la amistad íntima de Dios estaba sobre mi morada;
5 cuando el Todopoderoso aún estaba conmigo,
y mis hijos estaban alrededor de mí;
6 cuando mis pasos se bañaban en leche,
y la roca me vertía corrientes de aceite.
7 »Entonces yo iba al tribunal de la ciudad y alistaba mi asiento en la plaza.
8 Los jóvenes me veían
y se hacían a un lado;
los ancianos se levantaban
y permanecían de pie.
9 Los magistrados detenían sus palabras
y ponían la mano sobre su boca.
10 La voz de los nobles se apagaba
y su lengua se pegaba a su paladar.
11 Cuando los oídos me oían,
me llamaban: “¡Dichoso!”.
Cuando los ojos me veían,
daban testimonio en mi favor.
12 Porque yo libraba al pobre que clamaba y al huérfano que no tenía
quien le ayudara.
13 La bendición del moribundo caía sobre mí,
y yo daba alegría al corazón de la viuda.
14 Yo me vestía de rectitud,
y ella me vestía a mí;
como manto y turbante era mi justicia.
15 »Yo era ojos para el ciego
y pies para el cojo.
16 Era un padre para los necesitados,
e investigaba la causa que no conocía.
17 Yo rompía las quijadas del inicuo,
y de sus dientes arrancaba la presa.
18 »Yo me decía: “En mi nido expiraré,
y multiplicaré mis días como la arena”.
19 Mi raíz alcanzaba hasta las aguas,
y de noche el rocío se posaba en mis ramas.
20 Mi honra se mantenía nueva en mí,
y mi arco se renovaba en mi mano.
21 »Ellos me escuchaban y esperaban; ante mi consejo guardaban silencio.
22 Después de mi palabra no volvían
a hablar,
y mi discurso destilaba sobre ellos.
23 Me esperaban como a la lluvia,
y abrían su boca como a la lluvia tardía.
24 Cuando me reía con ellos, ¡no lo creían! No dejaban decaer la luz de mi rostro.
25 Yo escogía el camino para ellos
y me sentaba como su jefe.
Yo vivía como un rey
que está en medio de sus tropas, como el que consuela a los que están de duelo.

2 “How I long for the months gone by,(B)
for the days when God watched over me,(C)
3 when his lamp shone on my head
and by his light I walked through darkness!(D)
4 Oh, for the days when I was in my prime,
when God’s intimate friendship(E) blessed my house,(F)
5 when the Almighty was still with me
and my children(G) were around me,(H)
6 when my path was drenched with cream(I)
and the rock(J) poured out for me streams of olive oil.(K)
7 “When I went to the gate(L) of the city
and took my seat in the public square,
8 the young men saw me and stepped aside(M)
and the old men rose to their feet;(N)
9 the chief men refrained from speaking(O)
and covered their mouths with their hands;(P)
10 the voices of the nobles were hushed,(Q)
and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.(R)
11 Whoever heard me spoke well of me,
and those who saw me commended me,(S)
12 because I rescued the poor(T) who cried for help,
and the fatherless(U) who had none to assist them.(V)
13 The one who was dying blessed me;(W)
I made the widow’s(X) heart sing.
14 I put on righteousness(Y) as my clothing;
justice was my robe and my turban.(Z)
15 I was eyes(AA) to the blind
and feet to the lame.(AB)
16 I was a father to the needy;(AC)
I took up the case(AD) of the stranger.(AE)
17 I broke the fangs of the wicked
and snatched the victims(AF) from their teeth.(AG)
18 “I thought, ‘I will die in my own house,
my days as numerous as the grains of sand.(AH)
19 My roots will reach to the water,(AI)
and the dew will lie all night on my branches.(AJ)
20 My glory will not fade;(AK)
the bow(AL) will be ever new in my hand.’(AM)
21 “People listened to me expectantly,
waiting in silence for my counsel.(AN)
22 After I had spoken, they spoke no more;(AO)
my words fell gently on their ears.(AP)
23 They waited for me as for showers
and drank in my words as the spring rain.(AQ)
24 When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it;
the light of my face(AR) was precious to them.[a](AS)
25 I chose the way for them and sat as their chief;(AT)
I dwelt as a king(AU) among his troops;
I was like one who comforts mourners.(AV)
