Job Loses His Health
2 Again there was a day when the sons of God (angels) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan (adversary, accuser) also came among them to present himself before the Lord. 2 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Then Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming around on the earth and from walking around on it.” 3 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered and reflected on My servant Job? For there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God [with reverence] and abstains from and turns away from evil [because he honors God]. And still he maintains and holds tightly to his integrity, although you incited Me against him to destroy him without cause.” 4 Satan answered the Lord, “[a]Skin for skin! Yes, a man will give all he has for his life. 5 But put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh [and severely afflict him]; and he will curse You to Your face.” 6 So the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, only spare his life.”
7 So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome boils and agonizingly painful sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 And Job took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself, and he sat [down] among the ashes (rubbish heaps).
9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still cling to your integrity [and your faith and trust in God, without blaming Him]? Curse God and die!” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the [spiritually] foolish women speaks [ignorant and oblivious to God’s will]. Shall we indeed accept [only] good from God and not [also] accept adversity and disaster?” In [spite of] all this Job did not sin with [words from] his lips.
11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; for they had made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him. 12 When they looked from a distance and did not recognize him [because of his disfigurement], they raised their voices and wept; and each one tore his robe [in grief] and they threw dust over their heads toward the sky [in sorrow]. 13 So they sat down on the ground with Job for seven days and seven nights and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

- Job 2:4 This probably refers to a trade of one animal skin for another, but even so its application here is unclear. One possibility is that according to Satan, Job would be willing to give up his wife (his remaining loved one) to save his own life, thus surrendering his integrity (v 3). Another is that Satan is hypothetically offering to give up his own life if Job is actually willing to die for his integrity. In any case, this is a bluff on Satan’s part, probably to make what he really wants (v 5) appear less drastic.

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(C)
3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.(D) And he still maintains his integrity,(E) though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”(F)
4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has(G) for his own life. 5 But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,(H) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(I)
6 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands;(J) but you must spare his life.”(K)
7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.(L) 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.(M)
9 His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity?(N) Curse God and die!”(O)
10 He replied, “You are talking like a foolish[b] woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”(P)
In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.(Q)
11 When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite,(R) Bildad the Shuhite(S) and Zophar the Naamathite,(T) heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.(U) 12 When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him;(V) they began to weep aloud,(W) and they tore their robes(X) and sprinkled dust on their heads.(Y) 13 Then they sat on the ground(Z) with him for seven days and seven nights.(AA) No one said a word to him,(AB) because they saw how great his suffering was.

2 Llegó el día en que los ángeles[a] debían hacer acto de presencia ante el Señor, y con ellos llegó también Satanás para presentarse ante el Señor. 2 Y el Señor le preguntó:
―¿De dónde vienes?
―Vengo de rondar la tierra, y de recorrerla de un extremo a otro —le respondió Satanás.
3 ―¿Te has puesto a pensar en mi siervo Job? —volvió a preguntarle el Señor—. No hay en la tierra nadie como él; es un hombre recto e intachable, que me honra y vive apartado del mal. Y, aunque tú me incitaste contra él para arruinarlo sin motivo, ¡todavía mantiene firme su integridad!
4 ―¡Una cosa por la otra! —replicó Satanás—. Con tal de salvar la vida, el hombre da todo lo que tiene. 5 Pero extiende la mano y hiérelo, ¡a ver si no te maldice en tu propia cara!
6 ―Muy bien —dijo el Señor a Satanás—, Job está en tus manos. Eso sí, respeta su vida.
7 Dicho esto, Satanás se retiró de la presencia del Señor para afligir a Job con dolorosas llagas desde la planta del pie hasta la coronilla. 8 Y Job, sentado en medio de las cenizas, tomó un pedazo de teja para rascarse constantemente.
9 Su esposa le reprochó:
―¿Todavía mantienes firme tu integridad? ¡Maldice a Dios y muérete!
10 Job le respondió:
―Mujer, hablas como una necia. Si de Dios sabemos recibir lo bueno, ¿no sabremos recibir también lo malo?
A pesar de todo esto, Job no pecó ni de palabra.
Los tres amigos de Job
11 Tres amigos de Job se enteraron de todo el mal que le había sobrevenido, y de común acuerdo salieron de sus respectivos lugares para ir juntos a expresarle a Job sus condolencias y consuelo. Ellos eran Elifaz de Temán, Bildad de Súah, y Zofar de Namat. 12 Desde cierta distancia alcanzaron a verlo, y casi no lo pudieron reconocer. Se echaron a llorar a gritos, rasgándose las vestiduras y arrojándose polvo y ceniza sobre la cabeza, 13 y durante siete días y siete noches se sentaron en el suelo para hacerle compañía. Ninguno de ellos se atrevía a decirle nada, pues veían que su sufrimiento era muy grande.

3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, (C)a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he (D)holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, (E)to [a]destroy him without cause.”
4 So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. 5 (F)But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his (G)bone and his flesh, and he will surely [b]curse You to Your face!”
6 (H)And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.”
