    ^(B)before he brings darkness,
before your feet stumble
    on the twilight mountains,
and ^(C)while you look for light
    he turns it into gloom
    and makes it ^(D)deep darkness.

⁶ They did not say, ^(A)‘Where is the Lord
    who brought us up from the land of Egypt,
who led us ^(B)in the wilderness,
    in a land of deserts and pits,
in a land of drought and deep darkness,
    in a land that none passes through,
    where no man dwells?’

¹² Are your ^(A)wonders known in ^(B)the darkness,
    or your righteousness in the land of ^(C)forgetfulness?

¹⁹ yet you have ^(A)broken us in the place of ^(B)jackals
    and covered us with ^(C)the shadow of death.

¹⁷ Have ^(A)the gates of death been revealed to you,
    or have you seen the gates of ^(B)deep darkness?

²² There is no ^(A)gloom or ^(B)deep darkness
    where evildoers may hide themselves.
