Job Was Greatest of the Sons of the East
1 There was a man in the (A)land of Uz whose name was (B)Job; and that man was (C)blameless, upright, (D)fearing God, and (E)turning away from evil. 2 (F)Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 3 (G)His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 pairs of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was (H)the greatest of all the sons of the east. 4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 Now it happened when the days of feasting had completed their cycle, that Job would send and set them apart as holy. And he would rise up early in the morning and offer (I)burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “(J)Perhaps my sons have sinned and [a](K)cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
All Job Has Is in Satan’s Hand
6 (L)Now it was the day that the (M)sons of God came to stand before [b]Yahweh, and [c]Satan also came among them. 7 And Yahweh said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered Yahweh and said, “(N)From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” 8 Then Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you set your heart upon (O)My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, (P)a blameless and upright man, [d]fearing God and turning away from evil.” 9 And (Q)Satan answered Yahweh and said, “Does Job [e]fear God without cause? 10 (R)Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? (S)You have blessed the work of his hands, and his (T)possessions have increased in the land. 11 (U)But send forth Your hand now and (V)touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” 12 Then Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand, only do not send forth your hand toward him.” So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh.
Messengers Speak of the Fire of God
13 Now it happened that on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the [f]donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and [g]the (W)Sabeans fell upon them and took them. They also struck down the young men with the edge of the sword, and [h]I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While this one was still speaking, another also came and said, “(X)The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the young men and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While this one was still speaking, another also came and said, “The (Y)Chaldeans set up three companies and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the young men with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While this one was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and touched the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job arose and (Z)tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said,
“(AA)Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked I shall return there.
(AB)Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away.
Blessed be the name of Yahweh.”
22 (AC)Through all this Job did not sin, nor did he give offense to God.

1 În ţara Uţ, trăia odată un om al cărui nume era Iov. Omul acesta era integru şi drept; el se temea de Dumnezeu şi se ferea de rău. 2 I s-au născut şapte fii şi trei fiice. 3 El avea şapte mii de oi, trei mii de cămile, cinci sute de perechi de boi, cinci sute de măgari şi un număr mare de slujitori. Era cel mai însemnat om dintre toţi locuitorii Răsăritului. 4 Fiii lui obişnuiau să meargă şi să ţină, pe rând, câte un ospăţ în casa fiecăruia în parte; ei le chemau şi pe cele trei surori ale lor ca să mănânce şi să bea împreună cu ei. 5 Când se termina câte un şir de ospeţe, Iov îi chema şi îi sfinţea. El se trezea dimineaţa devreme şi aducea arderi-de-tot pentru fiecare dintre ei, zicând: „Poate fiii mei au păcătuit şi l-au blestemat pe Dumnezeu în inimile lor.“ Aşa obişnuia Iov să facă.
Prima încercare a lui Iov
6 Într-o zi, fiii[a] lui Dumnezeu au venit pentru a se înfăţişa înaintea Domnului. Satan[b] a venit şi el în mijlocul lor. 7 Domnul l-a întrebat pe Satan:
– De unde vii?
Satan i-a răspuns Domnului:
– De la cutreieratul pământului şi de la plimbarea ce am făcut-o pe el.
8 Domnul l-a întrebat pe Satan:
– L-ai văzut pe robul Meu Iov? Nu mai e nimeni ca el pe pământ, un om curat la suflet, drept, care se teme de Dumnezeu şi se fereşte de rău.
9 Atunci Satan I-a răspuns Domnului:
– Oare degeaba se teme Iov de Dumnezeu? 10 Nu l-ai împrejmuit Tu pe el, casa lui şi tot ceea ce are cu ocrotirea Ta? Tu ai binecuvântat lucrul mâinilor lui şi averile lui i s-au înmulţit în ţară. 11 Dar ia întinde-Ţi mâna acum şi atinge-te de tot ce are şi vei vedea că Te va blestema în faţă.
12 Domnul i-a răspuns lui Satan:
– Iată, îţi dau pe mână tot ceea ce are, numai asupra lui să nu-ţi întinzi mâna!
Atunci Satan a plecat dinaintea Domnului.
13 Într-o zi, în timp ce fiii şi fiicele sale mâncau şi beau vin în casa fiului cel mare, întâiul născut, 14 a venit la Iov un mesager care i-a zis: „În timp ce boii tăi erau la plug, iar măgăriţele păşteau lângă ei, 15 nişte sabeeni[c] s-au năpustit asupra lor, i-au luat, iar pe slujitori i-au trecut prin ascuţişul sabiei. Doar eu am scăpat ca să te înştiinţez.“ 16 În timp ce acesta încă vorbea, un altul a venit şi i-a zis: „Focul lui Dumnezeu a căzut din cer şi a ars oile şi slujitorii, i-a ars de tot. Doar eu am scăpat ca să te înştiinţez.“ 17 În timp ce acesta încă vorbea, a venit un altul şi i-a zis: „Nişte caldeeni[d], împărţiţi în trei cete, au năvălit, ţi-au luat cămilele, iar pe slujitori i-au trecut prin ascuţişul sabiei. Doar eu am scăpat ca să te înştiinţez.“ 18 În timp ce acesta încă vorbea, a venit un altul şi i-a zis: „Fiii şi fiicele tale mâncau şi beau vin în casa fratelui lor mai mare, întâiul născut. 19 Dintr-odată un vânt puternic a suflat dinspre pustie, a izbit în cele patru colţuri ale casei şi astfel casa s-a prăbuşit peste tineri şi au murit. Doar eu am scăpat ca să te înştiinţez.“
20 Atunci Iov s-a ridicat, şi-a sfâşiat mantia şi şi-a ras capul. A căzut la pământ, s-a închinat 21 şi a zis:
„Gol am ieşit din pântecele mamei mele
şi gol mă voi întoarce în pământ[e]!
Domnul a dat, Domnul a luat,
fie Numele Domnului binecuvântat!“
22 În toate acestea Iov n-a păcătuit, n-a aruncat vina asupra lui Dumnezeu.
