Integridad y riquezas de Job
1 Hubo un hombre en la tierra de Uz(A) llamado Job(B); y era aquel hombre intachable[a], recto(C), temeroso de[b] Dios(D) y apartado del mal(E). 2 Y le nacieron siete hijos y tres hijas(F). 3 Su hacienda era de siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas asnas(G) y muchísima servidumbre; y era aquel hombre el más grande(H) de todos los hijos del oriente. 4 Sus hijos solían ir y hacer un banquete en la casa de cada uno por turno, e invitaban[c] a sus tres hermanas para que comieran y bebieran con ellos. 5 Y sucedía que cuando los días del banquete habían pasado[d], Job enviaba a buscarlos y los santificaba, y levantándose temprano, ofrecía holocaustos(I) conforme al número de todos ellos. Porque Job decía: Quizá mis hijos hayan pecado(J) y maldecido a Dios en sus corazones(K). Así hacía Job siempre. 6 Hubo un día cuando los hijos de Dios vinieron a presentarse delante del Señor(L), y Satanás[e] vino también entre ellos(M). 7 Y el Señor dijo a Satanás: ¿De dónde vienes? Entonces Satanás respondió al Señor, y dijo: De recorrer la tierra y de andar por ella(N). 8 Y el Señor dijo a Satanás: ¿Te has fijado[f] en mi siervo Job(O)? Porque no hay ninguno como él sobre la tierra, hombre intachable[g] y recto, temeroso de[h] Dios y apartado del mal(P). 9 Respondió Satanás(Q) al Señor[i]: ¿Acaso teme Job a Dios de balde? 10 ¿No has hecho tú una valla alrededor de él, de su casa y de todo lo que tiene, por todos lados(R)? Has bendecido el trabajo de sus manos(S) y sus posesiones han aumentado en la tierra(T). 11 Pero extiende ahora tu mano y toca todo lo que tiene(U), verás si no te maldice en tu misma cara(V). 12 Entonces el Señor dijo a Satanás: He aquí, todo lo que tiene está en tu poder[j]; pero no extiendas tu mano sobre él. Y Satanás salió de la presencia del Señor.
Dios permite las pruebas de Job
13 Y aconteció que un[k] día en que sus hijos y sus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en la casa del hermano mayor, 14 vino un mensajero a Job y dijo: Los bueyes estaban arando y las asnas paciendo junto a ellos, 15 y los sabeos[l](W) atacaron[m] y se los llevaron. También mataron[n] a los criados a filo de espada; solo yo[o] escapé para contártelo. 16 Mientras estaba este hablando, vino otro y dijo: Fuego de Dios cayó del cielo y quemó las ovejas y a los criados y los consumió(X); solo yo escapé para contártelo. 17 Mientras estaba este hablando, vino otro y dijo: Los caldeos(Y) formaron tres cuadrillas y atacaron los camellos y se los llevaron, y mataron[p] a los criados a filo de espada; solo yo escapé para contártelo. 18 Mientras estaba este hablando, vino otro y dijo: Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en la casa de su hermano mayor, 19 y he aquí, vino un gran viento del otro lado del desierto y azotó las cuatro esquinas de la casa, y esta cayó sobre los jóvenes y murieron; solo yo escapé para contártelo.
20 Entonces Job se levantó, rasgó su manto, se rasuró la cabeza, y postrándose en tierra(Z), adoró, 21 y dijo:
Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre
y desnudo volveré allá(AA).
El Señor dio y el Señor quitó(AB);
bendito sea el nombre del Señor.
22 En todo esto Job no pecó ni culpó[q] a Dios(AC).

En god och framgångsrik person
1 I landet Us levde en man som hette Job[a]. Han var en god och rättsinnig man som fruktade Gud och höll sig borta från allt ont. 2 Job hade sju söner och tre döttrar. 3 Han ägde 7 000 får, 3 000 kameler, 500 par oxar och 500 åsneston, och han hade en mängd tjänare. Han var den mäktigaste i hela Östlandet.
4 Jobs söner brukade turas om att hålla fester i sina hem, och de inbjöd sina tre systrar och åt och drack tillsammans med dem. 5 När en fest, som kunde vara flera dagar, var över samlade Job sina barn och renade dem. Tidigt på morgonen bar han fram ett brännoffer för var och en av dem. Job tänkte: ”Kanske mina barn har syndat och förbannat Gud i sina hjärtan.” Så gjorde Job varje gång.
Anklagaren gör Job fattig
6 En dag när Guds söner kom fram inför Herren, var Anklagaren, Satan, tillsammans med dem.
7 ”Varifrån kommer du?” frågade Herren Anklagaren. ”Från en färd runt hela jorden”, svarade denne.
8 ”Har du lagt märke till min tjänare Job?” frågade Herren Anklagaren. ”Det finns ingen annan som han på hela jorden, en god och rättsinnig man som fruktar Gud och inte vill ha något med det onda att göra.”
9 ”Job fruktar väl inte Gud för ingenting?” svarade Anklagaren. 10 ”Du har alltid skyddat både honom, hans hus och hans tillhörigheter. Du har välsignat allt han gör, och hans boskapshjordar breder ut sig över landet. 11 Men räck ut din hand och rör vid all hans egendom, så ska du få se att han kommer att förbanna dig rakt i ansiktet!”
12 Herren svarade Anklagaren: ”Du får göra vad du vill med hans egendom, men Job själv får du inte röra.”
Anklagaren lämnade sedan Herren.
13 En dag, när Jobs söner och döttrar festade i den äldste broderns hus, 14 kom en budbärare till Job och sa: ”Man plöjde med dina oxar och åsnorna betade i närheten, 15 när sabéerna gick till anfall, drog i väg med dem och dödade allt ditt tjänstefolk utom mig. Jag är den ende som kom undan för att berätta detta för dig.”
16 Medan denne budbärare fortfarande talade, kom en annan och sa: ”Guds eld föll ner från himlen och brände upp fåren och folket. Jag är den ende som kom undan för att berätta detta för dig.”
17 Innan mannen hade slutat tala kom ytterligare en och sa: ”Kaldéerna delade upp sig i tre grupper och rövade bort kamelerna. De har även dödat tjänarna. Jag är den ende som kom undan för att berätta detta för dig.”
18 Medan denne fortfarande talade kom ytterligare en annan och sa: ”Dina söner och döttrar hade fest i din äldste sons hem, 19 när plötsligt en väldig storm kom svepande från öknen och tog tag i husets fyra hörn, så att taket störtade in och dödade allesammans. Jag är den ende som kom undan för att berätta detta för dig.”
20 Då reste sig Job och rev sönder sin mantel. Han rakade av allt hår, föll ner på marken inför Gud och tillbad. 21 Han sa:
”Jag kom naken ur min mors liv,
och naken vänder jag åter.
Herren gav och Herren tog.
Välsignat vare Herrens namn.”
22 Under allt detta syndade inte Job och klandrade inte Gud.

- 1:1 Berättelsen om Job, dvs. Jobs bok i sin helhet, är kanske den mest svårtydda texten i hela Gamla testamentet. När det är möjligt ges alternativa tolkningar. Job var från landet Edom, vars dialekt markant skiljde sig från den hebreiska dialekten i Kanaan. Septuaginta antog att Us var en del av Edom. Det skulle också kunna ha legat nära Hauran i Syrien.

Job and His Family in Uz
1 There was a man (A)in the land of Uz, whose name was (B)Job; and that man was (C)blameless and upright, and one who (D)feared God and [a]shunned evil. 2 And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 3 Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the [b]people of the East.
4 And his sons would go and feast in their houses, each on his appointed day, and would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and [c]sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning (E)and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and (F)cursed[d] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did regularly.
Satan Attacks Job’s Character
6 Now (G)there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and [e]Satan also came among them. 7 And the Lord said to [f]Satan, “From where do you come?”
So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From (H)going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you [g]considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and [h]shuns evil?”
9 So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 (I)Have You not [i]made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? (J)You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 (K)But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely (L)curse[j] You to Your face!”
12 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your [k]power; only do not lay a hand on his person.”
So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
Job Loses His Property and Children
13 Now there was a day (M)when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house; 14 and a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 when the [l]Sabeans [m]raided them and took them away—indeed they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and [n]consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
17 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels and took them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, (N)“Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and suddenly a great wind came from [o]across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
20 Then Job arose, (O)tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he (P)fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said:
(Q)“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The Lord (R)gave, and the Lord has (S)taken away;
(T)Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
22 (U)In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.
