16 Hij was nog niet uitgesproken of daar kwam nog een boodschapper. Die vertelde: ‘De bliksem heeft al uw schapen en de herders getroffen en verbrand! Ik ben de enige die in leven is gebleven.’ 17 Ook hij werd onderbroken door een volgende onheilsbode: ‘Drie groepen Chaldeeën hebben uw kamelen gestolen en uw dienaren gedood! Ik ben de enige die het kan navertellen.’ 18 Weer kreeg de boodschapper geen tijd om uit te spreken, want de volgende kwam binnenrennen met de boodschap: ‘Uw zonen en dochters zaten aan een feestmaaltijd in het huis van hun oudste broer.

16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(A) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(B) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(C) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(D) were feasting(E) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house,
