Vrede voor het volk van God
32 Kijk, een koning die rechtvaardig regeert en leiders die zich aan de wetten houden, 2 zij beschermen Israël tegen storm en wind, zij zijn als een rivier die de woestijn bevloeit en als een rots die schaduw geeft in een heet en onvruchtbaar land. 3 Dan zullen de ogen van Israël zich uiteindelijk wijd openen voor God, zijn volk zal naar zijn stem luisteren. 4 Zelfs de heethoofden zullen vol gevoel en begrip zijn en zij die stotteren van onzekerheid, zullen zich duidelijk uitspreken.
5 Op die dag zullen dwazen en bedriegers niet meer geëerd worden. 6 Iedereen zal een dwaas herkennen en huichelaars zullen niemand meer om de tuin kunnen leiden. Hun leugens over God en hun bedrog tegenover de hongerigen zal voor iedereen duidelijk zichtbaar zijn. Ook dat zij de dorstigen het water onthouden. 7 De oneerlijkheid van bedriegers zal worden aangetoond, evenals de leugens die zij gebruiken om de arme in rechtzaken te benadelen als deze voor zijn recht opkomt. 8 Maar edele mensen zullen edele daden willen doen en daarin volharden.
9 Luister, vrouwen die lui rondhangen in zorgeloze rust, luister naar mij: 10 binnenkort—over iets meer dan een jaar—zult u zich plotseling zorgen gaan maken. Want de wijnoogst en de fruitoogst zullen mislukken. 11 Beef, vrouwen van het gemakkelijke leven, doe uw mooie kleren uit en trek een rouwgewaad aan. 12 Sla uzelf op de borst en weeklaag om uw heerlijke akkers die spoedig vervallen zullen raken en om de kostelijke wijnen van vorige jaren. 13 Uw land zal overwoekerd worden door dorens en distels. Uw mooie huizen en gelukkige steden zullen verdwijnen. 14 Paleizen zullen leeg zijn, de drukke steden verlaten. Kudden wilde ezels en geiten zullen grazen op de berghellingen, waar nu nog de uitkijktorens staan, 15 totdat ten slotte de Geest vanuit de hoge over ons wordt uitgegoten. Dan wordt de woestijn tot een boomgaard en die tot een ware lusthof. 16,17 In de woestijn zal het recht wonen en daardoor zal er vrede zijn. Rust en vertrouwen zullen dan voor eeuwig regeren.
18 Mijn volk zal in veiligheid leven, ongestoord wonen. 19 In het bos is het koel en uw stad ligt laag in de vlakte. 20 U bent gelukkig en rijk gezegend als u zaait op de oevers en u uw vee in groene weiden laat grazen.

The Kingdom of Righteousness
32 See, a king(A) will reign in righteousness
and rulers will rule with justice.(B)
2 Each one will be like a shelter(C) from the wind
and a refuge from the storm,(D)
like streams of water(E) in the desert(F)
and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.
3 Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed,(G)
and the ears(H) of those who hear will listen.
4 The fearful heart will know and understand,(I)
and the stammering tongue(J) will be fluent and clear.
5 No longer will the fool(K) be called noble
nor the scoundrel be highly respected.
6 For fools speak folly,(L)
their hearts are bent on evil:(M)
They practice ungodliness(N)
and spread error(O) concerning the Lord;
the hungry they leave empty(P)
and from the thirsty they withhold water.
7 Scoundrels use wicked methods,(Q)
they make up evil schemes(R)
to destroy the poor with lies,
even when the plea of the needy(S) is just.(T)
8 But the noble make noble plans,
and by noble deeds(U) they stand.(V)
The Women of Jerusalem
9 You women(W) who are so complacent,
rise up and listen(X) to me;
you daughters who feel secure,(Y)
hear what I have to say!
10 In little more than a year(Z)
you who feel secure will tremble;
the grape harvest will fail,(AA)
and the harvest of fruit will not come.
11 Tremble,(AB) you complacent women;
shudder, you daughters who feel secure!(AC)
Strip off your fine clothes(AD)
and wrap yourselves in rags.(AE)
12 Beat your breasts(AF) for the pleasant fields,
for the fruitful vines(AG)
13 and for the land of my people,
a land overgrown with thorns and briers(AH)—
yes, mourn(AI) for all houses of merriment
and for this city of revelry.(AJ)
14 The fortress(AK) will be abandoned,
the noisy city deserted;(AL)
citadel and watchtower(AM) will become a wasteland forever,
the delight of donkeys,(AN) a pasture for flocks,(AO)
15 till the Spirit(AP) is poured on us from on high,
and the desert becomes a fertile field,(AQ)
and the fertile field seems like a forest.(AR)
16 The Lord’s justice(AS) will dwell in the desert,(AT)
his righteousness(AU) live in the fertile field.
17 The fruit of that righteousness(AV) will be peace;(AW)
its effect will be quietness and confidence(AX) forever.
18 My people will live in peaceful(AY) dwelling places,
in secure homes,(AZ)
in undisturbed places of rest.(BA)
19 Though hail(BB) flattens the forest(BC)
and the city is leveled(BD) completely,
20 how blessed you will be,
sowing(BE) your seed by every stream,(BF)
and letting your cattle and donkeys range free.(BG)

A King Will Reign in Righteousness
32 Behold, (A)a king will reign in righteousness,
and princes will rule in justice.
2 (B)Each will be like a hiding place from the wind,
a shelter from the storm,
(C)like streams of water in a dry place,
like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.
3 (D)Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed,
and the ears of those who hear will give attention.
4 The heart of the hasty will understand and know,
(E)and the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak distinctly.
5 (F)The fool will no more be called noble,
nor the scoundrel said to be honorable.
6 For (G)the fool speaks folly,
and his heart is busy with iniquity,
to practice ungodliness,
to utter error concerning the Lord,
(H)to leave the craving of the hungry unsatisfied,
and to deprive the thirsty of drink.
7 As for the scoundrel—(I)his devices are evil;
he plans wicked schemes
to ruin the poor with lying words,
even when the plea of the needy is right.
8 But he who is noble plans noble things,
and on noble things he stands.
Complacent Women Warned of Disaster
9 (J)Rise up, you women (K)who are at ease, hear my voice;
you complacent daughters, give ear to my speech.
10 In little more than a year
you will shudder, you complacent women;
for the grape harvest fails,
the fruit harvest will not come.
11 Tremble, you women (L)who are at ease,
shudder, you complacent ones;
(M)strip, and make yourselves bare,
(N)and tie sackcloth around your waist.
12 (O)Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields,
for the fruitful vine,
13 (P)for the soil of my people
growing up in thorns and briers,
(Q)yes, for all the joyous houses
in the exultant city.
14 For the palace is forsaken,
the populous city deserted;
the hill and the watchtower
will become dens forever,
(R)a joy of wild donkeys,
a pasture of flocks;
15 until (S)the Spirit is poured upon us from on high,
and (T)the wilderness becomes a fruitful field,
and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.
16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,
and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.
17 (U)And the effect of righteousness will be peace,
and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust[a] forever.
18 My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,
in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.
19 (V)And it will hail when the forest falls down,
(W)and the city will be utterly laid low.
20 (X)Happy are you who sow beside all waters,
who let the feet of the ox and the donkey range free.
