Gods woorden tegen Jeremia (vervolg)
8 In die tijd zullen de botten van de koningen van Juda, van de leiders, van de priesters, van de profeten en van de bewoners van Jeruzalem uit hun graven worden gehaald.[a] 2 Ze zullen overal verspreid liggen in het licht van de zon, de maan en de sterren die ze aanbaden toen ze nog leefden. Ze zullen nooit meer begraven worden. Ze zullen mest worden voor de akkers.
3 Ik laat maar een paar mensen over van dit slechte volk. Ze zullen wonen in de landen waarheen Ik hen heb weggejaagd. En ze zullen liever willen sterven dan daar in dat verre land te moeten leven, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers."
Jeremia moet Jeruzalem nog één keer waarschuwen
4 De Heer zegt: "Jeremia, zeg tegen hen: Dit zegt de Heer: Als iemand valt, staat hij toch ook weer op? Als iemand wegloopt, komt hij toch ook weer terug? 5 Waarom blijft dit volk dan weglopen? Waarom komt Jeruzalem dan nooit bij Mij terug? Dit volk gelooft liever in bedrog. Het weigert Mij weer te gaan dienen. 6 Ik heb goed naar hen geluisterd. Ik heb gehoord wat er gebeurt. Ze houden niet van de waarheid. Niemand heeft spijt van de slechte dingen die hij heeft gedaan. Niemand zegt: 'Help! Hoe heb ik dit kunnen doen?' Ze draven bij Mij vandaan als een paard dat zich in de strijd stort. 7 Ooievaars weten wanneer het tijd is om te komen en tijd om weer weg te trekken. Duiven, kraanvogels en zwaluwen weten wanneer het tijd is voor de trek. Maar mijn volk weet niet dat de tijd gekomen is dat Ik over hen rechtspreek.
8 Hoe durven jullie te zeggen: 'Wij zijn wijs en hebben de wet van de Heer'? Let op wat een leugens jullie schrijvers hebben opgeschreven! Ze hebben mijn wet vervalst! 9 De wijze mensen zullen voor schut staan. Ze hebben niet willen luisteren naar wat Ik heb gezegd. Ze hebben leugens geloofd. Wat voor wijsheid hebben ze dan? 10 Daarom zal Ik hun vrouwen aan andere mannen geven. Ik zal hun akkers aan andere eigenaars geven. Want iedereen, van hoog tot laag, is hebzuchtig. Iedereen bedriegt iedereen. Zelfs de profeten en de priesters doen dat. 11 Ze doen alsof er niets ergs met Jeruzalem aan de hand is en zeggen: 'Alles gaat goed. Alles gaat goed.' Maar het gaat helemaal niet goed! 12 Ze doen vreselijke dingen, maar ze schamen zich helemaal niet. Ze blozen niet eens. Daarom zullen ze samen met de anderen worden gedood. Op de dag dat Ik hen straf, zullen ze allemaal sterven, zegt de Heer.
13 Ik zal hen verzamelen en wegvagen. Want er zijn geen druiven aan de wijnstruik, geen vijgen aan de vijgenboom.[b] Zelfs de bladeren zijn afgevallen. Alles wat Ik aan hen had gegeven, zullen ze verliezen."
14 Jeremia zegt: "Waarom blijven we hier nog zitten? Laten we naar de steden met muren gaan en daar sterven. Want onze Heer God legt ons het zwijgen op. Hij geeft ons bittere gal te drinken, omdat we Hem ongehoorzaam zijn geweest. 15 Blijf maar hopen dat alles goed zal komen, maar het komt niet meer goed. Blijf maar hopen dat we nog gered worden, maar er komt niets dan ellende! 16 In het gebied van de stam van Dan in het noorden is het gesnuif van de paarden al te horen. De mensen die het leger horen aankomen, beven van angst. De vijand komt en vernietigt de akkers en oogsten, verwoest alle steden, doodt alle mensen. 17 De Heer zegt: Let op, Ik stuur giftige slangen op jullie af. Ze zullen jullie bijten en niets helpt tegen hun vergif."
Jeremia's diepe verdriet over zijn volk
18 Jeremia zegt: "Niemand kan mij troosten! Ik voel me ziek van verdriet. 19 Hoor! Ik hoor het hulpgeroep van Jeruzalem uit een ver land. Jeruzalem roept: 'Is de Heer dan niet meer in Jeruzalem? Woont de Koning daar dan niet meer?' Maar de Heer zegt tegen jullie: 'Waarom hebben jullie Mij zo kwaad gemaakt met jullie godenbeelden, goden die niets kunnen, goden uit andere landen?'
20 De oogsttijd is voorbij, de zomer is afgelopen, en we zijn nog steeds niet gered! 21 Ik ben zo bedroefd over de ellende van Jeruzalem! Ik voel me er ziek van. Ik loop in rouwkleren en ben diep geschokt. 22 Is er dan geen zalf in Gilead? Is er dan geen dokter? Want waarom zijn de wonden van Jeruzalem niet genezen? (lees verder)

8 »”En aquel tiempo —afirma el Señor—, se exhumarán los huesos de los reyes y de los jefes de Judá, de los sacerdotes y de los profetas, y de los habitantes de Jerusalén. 2 Quedarán expuestos al sol y a la luna, y a todas las estrellas del cielo, cuerpos celestes a los que ellos amaron, sirvieron, consultaron y adoraron. No se les recogerá ni se les enterrará; ¡como estiércol quedarán sobre la faz de la tierra! 3 En todos los lugares por donde yo disperse a los sobrevivientes de esta nación malvada, los que hayan quedado preferirán la muerte a la vida. Lo afirma el Señor Todopoderoso”.
Pecado y castigo
4 »Pero tú les advertirás que así dice el Señor:
»“Cuando los hombres caen,
¿acaso no se levantan?
Cuando uno se desvía,
¿acaso no vuelve al camino?
5 ¿Por qué entonces este pueblo se ha desviado?
¿Por qué persiste Jerusalén en su apostasía?
Se aferran al engaño,
y no quieren volver a mí.
6 He escuchado con suma atención,
para ver si alguien habla con rectitud,
pero nadie se arrepiente de su maldad;
nadie reconoce el mal que ha hecho.
Todos siguen su loca carrera,
como caballos desbocados en combate.
7 Aun la cigüeña en el cielo
conoce sus estaciones;
la tórtola, la golondrina y la grulla
saben cuándo deben emigrar.
Pero mi pueblo no conoce
las leyes del Señor.
8 »”¿Cómo os atrevéis a decir:
‘Somos sabios; la ley del Señor nos apoya’,
si la pluma engañosa de los escribas
la ha falsificado?
9 Los sabios serán avergonzados,
serán atrapados y abatidos.
Si han rechazado la palabra del Señor,
¿qué sabiduría pueden tener?
10 Por eso entregaré sus mujeres a otros hombres,
y sus campos a otros dueños.
Porque, desde el más pequeño hasta el más grande,
todos codician ganancias injustas;
desde el profeta hasta el sacerdote,
todos practican el engaño.
11 Curan por encima la herida de mi pueblo,
y les desean: ‘¡Paz, paz!’,
cuando en realidad no hay paz.
12 ¿Acaso se han avergonzado
de la abominación que han cometido?
¡No, no se han avergonzado de nada,
y ni siquiera saben lo que es la vergüenza!
Por eso, caerán con los que caigan;
cuando los castigue, serán derribados
—dice el Señor—.
13 »”Cuando quiero cosechar
—afirma el Señor—,
no encuentro uvas en la viña,
ni hay higos en la higuera;
sus hojas están marchitas.
¡Voy, pues, a quitarles
lo que les he dado!”»[a]
14 «¿Qué hacemos aquí sentados?
¡Venid, y vayámonos juntos a las ciudades fortificadas
para morir allí!
El Señor nuestro Dios nos está destruyendo.
Nos ha dado a beber agua envenenada,
porque hemos pecado contra él.
15 Esperábamos paz,
pero no llegó nada bueno.
Esperábamos un tiempo de salud,
pero solo nos llegó el terror.
16 Desde Dan se escucha
el resoplar de sus caballos;
cuando relinchan sus corceles,
tiembla toda la tierra.
Vienen a devorar el país,
y todo lo que hay en él,
la ciudad y todos sus habitantes».
17 «¡Mirad! Estoy lanzando contra vosotros
serpientes venenosas que os morderán,
y contra ellas no hay encantamiento»,
afirma el Señor.
18 La aflicción me abruma;[b]
mi corazón desfallece.
19 El clamor de mi pueblo se levanta
desde todos los rincones del país:
«¿Acaso no está el Señor en Sión?
¿No está allí su rey?»
«¿Por qué me provocan con sus ídolos,
con sus dioses inútiles y extraños?»
20 «Pasó la cosecha, se acabó el verano,
y nosotros no hemos sido salvados».
21 Por la herida de mi pueblo estoy herido;
estoy de luto, el terror se apoderó de mí.
22 ¿No queda bálsamo en Galaad?
¿No queda allí médico alguno?
¿Por qué no se ha restaurado
la salud de mi pueblo?

8 “‘At that time, declares the Lord, the bones of the kings and officials of Judah, the bones of the priests and prophets, and the bones(A) of the people of Jerusalem will be removed(B) from their graves. 2 They will be exposed to the sun and the moon and all the stars of the heavens, which they have loved and served(C) and which they have followed and consulted and worshiped.(D) They will not be gathered up or buried,(E) but will be like dung lying on the ground.(F) 3 Wherever I banish them,(G) all the survivors of this evil nation will prefer death to life,(H) declares the Lord Almighty.’
Sin and Punishment
4 “Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says:
“‘When people fall down, do they not get up?(I)
When someone turns away,(J) do they not return?
5 Why then have these people turned away?
Why does Jerusalem always turn away?
They cling to deceit;(K)
they refuse to return.(L)
6 I have listened(M) attentively,
but they do not say what is right.
None of them repent(N) of their wickedness,
saying, “What have I done?”
Each pursues their own course(O)
like a horse charging into battle.
7 Even the stork in the sky
knows her appointed seasons,
and the dove, the swift and the thrush
observe the time of their migration.
But my people do not know(P)
the requirements of the Lord.
8 “‘How can you say, “We are wise,
for we have the law(Q) of the Lord,”
when actually the lying pen of the scribes
has handled it falsely?
9 The wise(R) will be put to shame;
they will be dismayed(S) and trapped.(T)
Since they have rejected the word(U) of the Lord,
what kind of wisdom(V) do they have?
10 Therefore I will give their wives to other men
and their fields to new owners.(W)
From the least to the greatest,
all are greedy for gain;(X)
prophets(Y) and priests alike,
all practice deceit.(Z)
11 They dress the wound of my people
as though it were not serious.
“Peace, peace,” they say,
when there is no peace.(AA)
12 Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct?
No, they have no shame(AB) at all;
they do not even know how to blush.
So they will fall among the fallen;
they will be brought down when they are punished,(AC)
says the Lord.(AD)
13 “‘I will take away their harvest,
declares the Lord.
There will be no grapes on the vine.(AE)
There will be no figs(AF) on the tree,
and their leaves will wither.(AG)
What I have given them
will be taken(AH) from them.[a]’”
14 Why are we sitting here?
Gather together!
Let us flee to the fortified cities(AI)
and perish there!
For the Lord our God has doomed us to perish
and given us poisoned water(AJ) to drink,
because we have sinned(AK) against him.
15 We hoped for peace(AL)
but no good has come,
for a time of healing
but there is only terror.(AM)
16 The snorting of the enemy’s horses(AN)
is heard from Dan;(AO)
at the neighing of their stallions
the whole land trembles.(AP)
They have come to devour(AQ)
the land and everything in it,
the city and all who live there.
17 “See, I will send venomous snakes(AR) among you,
vipers that cannot be charmed,(AS)
and they will bite you,”
declares the Lord.
18 You who are my Comforter[b] in sorrow,
my heart is faint(AT) within me.
19 Listen to the cry of my people
from a land far away:(AU)
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
Is her King(AV) no longer there?”
20 “The harvest is past,
the summer has ended,
and we are not saved.”
