Jeruzalem wordt veroverd
52 Zedekia was 21 jaar toen hij koning werd. Hij regeerde 11 jaar in Jeruzalem. Zijn moeder heette Hamutal. Ze was een dochter van Jeremia uit Libna.[a] 2 Zedekia leefde niet zoals de Heer het wilde, net zoals koning Jojakim had gedaan. 3 Daardoor werd de Heer zó woedend op Jeruzalem en Juda, dat Hij niets meer met hen te maken wilde hebben.
Toen Zedekia negen jaar koning was, kwam hij in opstand tegen de koning van Babel. 4 Op de tiende dag van de tiende maand van dat jaar trok koning Nebukadnezar daarom van Babel met zijn hele leger naar Jeruzalem. Hij omsingelde de stad. 5 Anderhalf jaar lang lag zijn leger rond de stad. 6 Op de negende dag van de vierde maand werd er een gat geslagen in de muur van de stad. Dat was toen Zedekia 11 jaar koning was. Er was inmiddels grote hongersnood in de stad. Ook in de rest van het land was er geen brood meer. 7 Toen vluchtten de soldaten 's nachts uit de stad weg, door de poort tussen de twee muren bij de paleistuin. Ze vluchtten over de weg naar de vlakte. Het leger van de Babyloniërs lag rond de stad. 8 En de Babyloniërs achtervolgden het leger van Juda en hun koning. Ze haalden Zedekia in op de vlakte van Jericho. Het leger raakte van hem gescheiden en werd uiteen geslagen. 9 Ze grepen de koning en brachten hem naar de koning van Babel in Ribla, in het land van Hamat. 10 De koning van Babel liet weten hoe hij hem zou straffen. Daarna liet hij Zedekia's zonen daar voor zijn ogen doden. Ook alle leiders van Juda liet hij in Ribla doden. 11 Daarna liet hij Zedekia blind maken en met twee ketenen boeien. Toen bracht hij hem naar Babel en zette hem tot zijn dood in de gevangenis.
De verwoesting van de stad en de tempel
12 Daarna trok de aanvoerder van de lijfwacht, Nebuzaradan, Jeruzalem binnen. Dat was op de tiende dag van de vijfde maand, toen Nebukadnezar 19 jaar koning van Babel was. 13 Hij stak de tempel van de Heer en het koninklijk paleis in brand en ook alle huizen van de belangrijke mensen van Jeruzalem. 14 En hij liet zijn leger de muren van Jeruzalem afbreken. 15 De arme mensen die eerst nog in de stad en in het land waren achtergelaten, én iedereen die naar de koning van Babel was overgelopen, nam Nebuzaradan gevangen mee naar Babel. 16 Hij liet alleen een klein aantal van de allerarmste mensen in het land achter. Zij moesten voor de akkers en wijngaarden zorgen.
17 Verder braken de Babyloniërs in de tempel van de Heer de koperen pilaren, de grote koperen waskom en de onderstellen daarvan in stukken. En ze namen al dat koper mee naar Babel. 18 Ook de koperen potten, scheppen, vorken, offerschalen en wierookschalen, dus al het koperen gereedschap dat bij de offers gebruikt werd, namen ze mee. 19 Nebuzaradan nam zelf alles mee wat van goud of zilver was: schotels, vuurpannen, offerschalen, potten, kandelaren, schalen en kommen. 20 De twee pilaren, de grote koperen waskom en de onderstellen daarvan in de vorm van twaalf koperen ossen waren vroeger door koning Salomo voor de tempel van de Heer gemaakt. Er was zoveel koper voor gebruikt, dat het allemaal niet te wegen was. 21 De pilaren waren 18 el (8,10 meter) hoog, met een omtrek van 12 el (5,40 meter). Ze waren hol. De wand was vier vingers dik. 22 Bovenop de pilaren zat een koperen sierstuk van 5 el (2,25 meter) hoog. Daar omheen zat een koperen netwerk, versierd met granaatappels. 23 Er zaten 100 granaatappels aan elk netwerk, maar er waren er maar 96 te zien.
24 Ook nam Nebuzaradan nog een aantal mensen gevangen: de hoofdpriester Seraja, de tweede priester Zefanja, de drie deurwachters, 25 één hofdienaar die het bevel had gehad over het leger, zeven raadgevers van de koning die nog in de stad gevonden werden, de schrijver van de legeraanvoerder die uit het hele land de mensen opriep voor dienst in het leger, en 60 gewone mannen uit de stad. 26 Deze nam hij mee naar de koning van Babel in Ribla. 27 En de koning van Babel liet hen daar doden. Zo werd het volk van Juda gevangen uit zijn land meegenomen.
28 In totaal nam Nebukadnezar een groot aantal mensen uit Juda mee. Toen hij zeven jaar koning was nam hij 3.023 Judeeërs gevangen mee. 29 Toen hij 18 jaar koning was nog 832 Jeruzalemmers. 30 En toen Nebukadnezar 23 jaar koning was nam de aanvoerder van de lijfwacht, Nebuzaradan, nog 745 Judeeërs mee. In totaal 4600 mensen.
Jojachin en de koning van Babel
31 Toen koning Jojachin van Juda 37 jaar in Babel gevangen zat, werd Evil-Merodach koning van Babel. Hij liet Jojachin uit de gevangenis halen. Dat was op de 25e dag van de twaalfde maand. 32 Hij was vriendelijk tegen hem en gaf hem de belangrijkste plaats onder de andere koningen die bij hem in Babel waren. 33 Hij gaf hem nieuwe kleren. Jojachin mocht voortaan regelmatig bij de koning van Babel aan tafel eten. 34 Ook zorgde de koning van Babel ervoor dat Jojachin tot aan zijn dood elke dag voldoende te eten en te drinken had.

The Message
The Destruction of Jerusalem and Exile of Judah
52 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he started out as king. He was king in Jerusalem for eleven years. His mother’s name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah. Her hometown was Libnah.
2 As far as God was concerned, Zedekiah was just one more evil king, a carbon copy of Jehoiakim.
3-5 The source of all this doom to Jerusalem and Judah was God’s anger. God turned his back on them as an act of judgment.
Zedekiah revolted against the king of Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar set out for Jerusalem with a full army. He set up camp and sealed off the city by building siege mounds around it. He arrived on the ninth year and tenth month of Zedekiah’s reign. The city was under siege for nineteen months (until the eleventh year of Zedekiah).
6-8 By the fourth month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, on the ninth day of the month, the famine was so bad that there wasn’t so much as a crumb of bread for anyone. Then the Babylonians broke through the city walls. Under cover of the night darkness, the entire Judean army fled through an opening in the wall (it was the gate between the two walls above the King’s Garden). They slipped through the lines of the Babylonians who surrounded the city and headed for the Jordan into the Arabah Valley, but the Babylonians were in full pursuit. They caught up with them in the Plains of Jericho. But by then Zedekiah’s army had deserted and was scattered.
9-11 The Babylonians captured Zedekiah and marched him off to the king of Babylon at Riblah in Hamath, who tried and sentenced him on the spot. The king of Babylon then killed Zedekiah’s sons right before his eyes. The summary murder of his sons was the last thing Zedekiah saw, for they then blinded him. The king of Babylon followed that up by killing all the officials of Judah. Securely handcuffed, Zedekiah was hauled off to Babylon. The king of Babylon threw him in prison, where he stayed until the day he died.
12-16 In the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon on the seventh day of the fifth month, Nebuzaradan, the king of Babylon’s chief deputy, arrived in Jerusalem. He burned the Temple of God to the ground, went on to the royal palace, and then finished off the city. He burned the whole place down. He put the Babylonian troops he had with him to work knocking down the city walls. Finally, he rounded up everyone left in the city, including those who had earlier deserted to the king of Babylon, and took them off into exile. He left a few poor dirt farmers behind to tend the vineyards and what was left of the fields.
17-19 The Babylonians broke up the bronze pillars, the bronze washstands, and the huge bronze basin (the Sea) that were in the Temple of God, and hauled the bronze off to Babylon. They also took the various bronze-crafted liturgical accessories, as well as the gold and silver censers and sprinkling bowls, used in the services of Temple worship. The king’s deputy didn’t miss a thing. He took every scrap of precious metal he could find.
20-23 The amount of bronze they got from the two pillars, the Sea, the twelve bronze bulls that supported the Sea, and the ten washstands that Solomon had made for the Temple of God was enormous. They couldn’t weigh it all! Each pillar stood twenty-seven feet high with a circumference of eighteen feet. The pillars were hollow, the bronze a little less than an inch thick. Each pillar was topped with an ornate capital of bronze pomegranates and filigree, which added another seven and a half feet to its height. There were ninety-six pomegranates evenly spaced—in all, a hundred pomegranates worked into the filigree.
24-27 The king’s deputy took a number of special prisoners: Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the associate priest, three wardens, the chief remaining army officer, seven of the king’s counselors who happened to be in the city, the chief recruiting officer for the army, and sixty men of standing from among the people who were still there. Nebuzaradan the king’s deputy marched them all off to the king of Babylon at Riblah. And there at Riblah, in the land of Hamath, the king of Babylon killed the lot of them in cold blood.
Judah went into exile, orphaned from her land.

28 3,023 men of Judah were taken into exile by Nebuchadnezzar in the seventh year of his reign.
29 832 from Jerusalem were taken in the eighteenth year of his reign.
30 745 men from Judah were taken off by Nebuzaradan, the king’s chief deputy, in Nebuchadnezzar’s twenty-third year.
The total number of exiles was 4,600.

31-34 When Jehoiachin king of Judah had been in exile for thirty-seven years, Evil-Merodach became king in Babylon and let Jehoiachin out of prison. This release took place on the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month. The king treated him most courteously and gave him preferential treatment beyond anything experienced by the political prisoners held in Babylon. Jehoiachin took off his prison garb and from then on ate his meals in company with the king. The king provided everything he needed to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

52 Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.
2 And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.
3 For through the anger of the Lord it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, till he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
4 And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts against it round about.
5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah.
6 And in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was sore in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.
7 Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain.
8 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.
9 Then they took the king, and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath; where he gave judgment upon him.
10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes: he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah.
11 Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in chains, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death.
12 Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, which served the king of Babylon, into Jerusalem,
13 And burned the house of the Lord, and the king's house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, and all the houses of the great men, burned he with fire:
14 And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about.
15 Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people, and the residue of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.
16 But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vinedressers and for husbandmen.
17 Also the pillars of brass that were in the house of the Lord, and the bases, and the brasen sea that was in the house of the Lord, the Chaldeans brake, and carried all the brass of them to Babylon.
18 The caldrons also, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the bowls, and the spoons, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away.
19 And the basons, and the firepans, and the bowls, and the caldrons, and the candlesticks, and the spoons, and the cups; that which was of gold in gold, and that which was of silver in silver, took the captain of the guard away.
20 The two pillars, one sea, and twelve brasen bulls that were under the bases, which king Solomon had made in the house of the Lord: the brass of all these vessels was without weight.
21 And concerning the pillars, the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits; and a fillet of twelve cubits did compass it; and the thickness thereof was four fingers: it was hollow.
22 And a chapiter of brass was upon it; and the height of one chapiter was five cubits, with network and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about, all of brass. The second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these.
23 And there were ninety and six pomegranates on a side; and all the pomegranates upon the network were an hundred round about.
24 And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:
25 He took also out of the city an eunuch, which had the charge of the men of war; and seven men of them that were near the king's person, which were found in the city; and the principal scribe of the host, who mustered the people of the land; and threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the midst of the city.
26 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah.
27 And the king of Babylon smote them, and put them to death in Riblah in the land of Hamath. Thus Judah was carried away captive out of his own land.
28 This is the people whom Nebuchadrezzar carried away captive: in the seventh year three thousand Jews and three and twenty:
29 In the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar he carried away captive from Jerusalem eight hundred thirty and two persons:
30 In the three and twentieth year of Nebuchadrezzar Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the Jews seven hundred forty and five persons: all the persons were four thousand and six hundred.
31 And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, in the five and twentieth day of the month, that Evilmerodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him forth out of prison.
32 And spake kindly unto him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon,
33 And changed his prison garments: and he did continually eat bread before him all the days of his life.
34 And for his diet, there was a continual diet given him of the king of Babylon, every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life.
