15 Ehara tenei matauranga i te mea e heke iho ana i runga; no te whenua ia, no te ngakau maori, no te rewera.
16 I te wahi hoki e noho ai te hae me te totohe, ko reira ano te noho kino me nga mahi he katoa.

Be careful how you speak
3 My Christian friends, not many of you should become teachers. We people who teach God's message must be very careful. When God judges everybody, he will demand more from us than from other people.[a] 2 We all make many mistakes. So, if someone never says anything that is bad, that person is completely good. It shows that he has authority over his whole body. 3 For example, think about how we make a horse go the right way. We put a small bit of metal in its mouth so that we can turn it. Then we can cause the horse's whole body to go where we want it to go. 4 Also, think about ships that sail on the sea. They are very large. Strong winds push them with great power. But we fix a piece of wood at the back of the ship. With this small piece of wood, the master can cause the ship to go anywhere that he wants it to go. 5 In the same way, our tongue is a very small part of our body. But it speaks as if it is very great.
Think about this. A very small fire can cause even a big forest to burn completely. 6 A person's tongue is like a fire. It has the power of everything in the world that is wrong. It is a small part of the body but it can spoil the whole person. Like a fire, it can destroy all of a person's life. It is a fire that comes from the fire of hell itself.
7 Remember this: People can cause all kinds of things to do what they want them to do. They have done this with wild animals, birds, snakes and things that live in the sea. 8 But no person can rule his tongue. It continues to say bad things. It is like a bad poison that can cause death. 9 We use our tongue to praise the Lord God who is our Father. But then we use it to curse other people. That is wrong, because God made those people to be like himself. 10 This shows that we use the same mouth to praise and also to curse. My Christian friends, we should not do this. 11 Salty water and sweet water never come from the same spring. 12 A fig tree cannot give olives, my friends. A vine for grapes cannot give figs. And a salty spring cannot give sweet water.
How to be wise
13 Do some of you think that you are wise? Do you think that you are clever? If so, show that you are wise by the way that you live. Be kind to other people. Do things that are good. That is what it means to be wise. 14 But if you live in a bad way, do not think that you are wise. Are you jealous of other people so that you hate them? Do you want to make yourself important? If you live like that, do not say that you are great and wise. You are not saying what is true. 15 You are not being wise in the way that God wants you to be wise. Instead, you are thinking like people who do not know God. Your thoughts do not come from God's Spirit. They come from demons. 16 If you are jealous of other people and you want to make yourself important, that will cause trouble. People will argue and fight against one another. They will do all kinds of bad things. 17 But if God makes you really wise, you will live in a completely good way. That is the most important thing. Also, you will live in a way that brings peace. You will be kind to other people so that they become your friends. You will listen to them and not argue. You will forgive them and do many good things to help them. You will not choose between people. And you will not be a hypocrite.
18 Those who bring peace to other people help them to live together in peace. As a result, people choose to do what is right and good.

- 3:1 Teachers must be careful to teach God's word correctly. Because they have authority as teachers, they can cause a lot of trouble to people if they do not teach what is true. So God will judge them very strictly.

Taming the Tongue
3 Not many of you should become teachers,(A) my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged(B) more strictly.(C) 2 We all stumble(D) in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say(E) is perfect,(F) able to keep their whole body in check.(G)
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.(H) 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.(I) Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire,(J) a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body,(K) sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.(L)
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.(M)
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.(N) 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?(O) Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Two Kinds of Wisdom
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it(P) by their good life, by deeds(Q) done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition(R) in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.(S) 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven(T) but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.(U) 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition,(V) there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven(W) is first of all pure; then peace-loving,(X) considerate, submissive, full of mercy(Y) and good fruit, impartial and sincere.(Z) 18 Peacemakers(AA) who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.(AB)

3 Hermanos míos, no pretendáis muchos de vosotros ser maestros, pues, como sabéis, seremos juzgados con más severidad. 2 Todos fallamos mucho. Si alguien nunca falla en lo que dice, es una persona perfecta, capaz también de controlar todo su cuerpo.
3 Cuando ponemos freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, podemos controlar todo el animal. 4 Fijaos también en los barcos. A pesar de ser tan grandes y de ser impulsados por fuertes vientos, se gobiernan por un pequeño timón a voluntad del piloto. 5 Así también la lengua es un miembro muy pequeño del cuerpo, pero hace alarde de grandes hazañas. ¡Imaginaos qué gran bosque se incendia con tan pequeña chispa! 6 También la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de maldad. Siendo uno de nuestros órganos, contamina todo el cuerpo y, encendida por el infierno,[a] prende a su vez fuego a todo el curso de la vida.
7 El ser humano sabe domar y, en efecto, ha domado toda clase de fieras, de aves, de reptiles y de bestias marinas; 8 pero nadie puede domar la lengua. Es un mal irrefrenable, lleno de veneno mortal.
9 Con la lengua bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a las personas, creadas a imagen de Dios. 10 De una misma boca salen bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así. 11 ¿Puede acaso brotar de una misma fuente agua dulce y agua salada?[b] 12 Hermanos míos, ¿acaso puede dar aceitunas una higuera o higos una vid? Pues tampoco una fuente de agua salada puede dar agua dulce.
Dos clases de sabiduría
13 ¿Quién es sabio y entendido entre vosotros? Que lo demuestre con su buena conducta, mediante obras hechas con la humildad que le da su sabiduría. 14 Pero, si tenéis envidias amargas y rivalidades en el corazón, dejad de presumir y de faltar a la verdad. 15 Esa no es la sabiduría que desciende del cielo, sino que es terrenal, puramente humana y diabólica. 16 Porque donde hay envidias y rivalidades, también hay confusión y toda clase de acciones malvadas.
17 En cambio, la sabiduría que desciende del cielo es ante todo pura, y además pacífica, bondadosa, dócil, llena de compasión y de buenos frutos, imparcial y sincera. 18 En fin, el fruto de la justicia se siembra en paz para[c] los que hacen la paz.
