12 (A)Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has [a]been approved, he will receive (B)the crown of life which the Lord (C)has promised to those who (D)love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “(E)I am being tempted [b]by God”; for God cannot be tempted [c]by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then (F)when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when (G)sin [d]is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 (H)Do not be [e]deceived, (I)my beloved brethren. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is (J)from above, coming down from (K)the Father of lights, (L)with whom there is no variation or [f]shifting shadow. 18 In the exercise of (M)His will He (N)brought us forth by (O)the word of truth, so that we would be [g]a kind of (P)first fruits [h]among His creatures.

19 [i]This (Q)you know, (R)my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, (S)slow to speak and (T)slow to anger; 20 for (U)the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore, (V)putting aside all filthiness and all [j]that remains of wickedness, in [k]humility receive (W)the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 (X)But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his [l]natural face (Y)in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, [m]he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, (Z)the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but [n]an effectual doer, this man will be (AA)blessed in [o]what he does.

26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not [p](AB)bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion (AC)in the sight of our God and Father is this: to (AD)visit (AE)orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained [q]by (AF)the world.

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(A) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(B) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(C)

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(D) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(E) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(F)

16 Don’t be deceived,(G) my dear brothers and sisters.(H) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(I) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(J) who does not change(K) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(L) through the word of truth,(M) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(N) of all he created.

Listening and Doing

19 My dear brothers and sisters,(O) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(P) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(Q) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of(R) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,(S) which can save you.

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(T) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,(U) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.(V)

26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues(W) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after(X) orphans and widows(Y) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(Z)
