Isaiah and His Children as Signs
8 The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll(A) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”[a](B) 2 So I called in Uriah(C) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses(D) for me. 3 Then I made love to the prophetess,(E) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.(F) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.(G) 4 For before the boy knows(H) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus(I) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.(J)”
5 The Lord spoke to me again:
6 “Because this people has rejected(K)
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah(L)
and rejoices over Rezin
and the son of Remaliah,(M)
7 therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
the mighty floodwaters(N) of the Euphrates—
the king of Assyria(O) with all his pomp.(P)
It will overflow all its channels,
run over all its banks(Q)
8 and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,(R)
passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings(S) will cover the breadth of your land,
Immanuel[b]!”(T)
9 Raise the war cry,[c](U) you nations, and be shattered!(V)
Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare(W) for battle, and be shattered!
Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;(X)
propose your plan, but it will not stand,(Y)
for God is with us.[d](Z)
11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,(AA) warning me not to follow(AB) the way of this people:
12 “Do not call conspiracy(AC)
everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,(AD)
and do not dread it.(AE)
13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,(AF)
he is the one you are to fear,(AG)
he is the one you are to dread.(AH)
14 He will be a holy place;(AI)
for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone(AJ) that causes people to stumble(AK)
and a rock that makes them fall.(AL)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
a trap and a snare.(AM)
15 Many of them will stumble;(AN)
they will fall and be broken,
they will be snared and captured.”
16 Bind up this testimony of warning(AO)
and seal(AP) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
17 I will wait(AQ) for the Lord,
who is hiding(AR) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.(AS)
18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.(AT) We are signs(AU) and symbols(AV) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.(AW)
The Darkness Turns to Light
19 When someone tells you to consult(AX) mediums and spiritists,(AY) who whisper and mutter,(AZ) should not a people inquire(BA) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction(BB) and the testimony of warning.(BC) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light(BD) of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry,(BE) they will roam through the land;(BF) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(BG) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(BH) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(BI)

8 El Señor me dijo: «Toma una tablilla grande y con un estilete común escribe sobre ella: “Tocante a Maher Salal Jasbaz”.[a] 2 Yo convocaré como testigos confiables al sacerdote Urías y a Zacarías, hijo de Jeberequías».
3 Luego tuve relaciones con la profetisa y ella concibió y dio a luz un hijo. Entonces el Señor me dijo: «Ponle por nombre Maher Salal Jasbaz. 4 Antes de que el niño aprenda a decir “papá” y “mamá”, la riqueza de Damasco y el botín de Samaria serán llevados ante el rey de Asiria».
5 El Señor volvió a decirme:
6 «Por cuanto este pueblo ha rechazado
las mansas corrientes de Siloé
y se regocija con Rezín
y con el hijo de Remalías,
7 el Señor está a punto de traer contra ellos
las impetuosas crecientes del río Éufrates:
al rey de Asiria con toda su gloria.
Rebasará todos sus canales,
desbordará todas sus orillas;
8 pasará hasta Judá, la inundará
y crecerá hasta llegarle al cuello.
Sus alas extendidas, ¡oh Emanuel!,[b]
cubrirán la anchura de tu tierra».
9 ¡Alcen el grito de guerra, pueblos, pues serán derrotados!
¡Escuchen, tierras distantes!
¡Prepárense para la guerra, pues serán destrozadas!
¡Prepárense para la guerra, pues serán destrozadas!
10 Tracen su estrategia, pero será desbaratada;
propongan su plan, pero no se realizará,
porque Dios está con nosotros.[c]
Hay que temer a Dios
11 El Señor me habló fuertemente y me advirtió que no siguiera el camino de este pueblo. Me dijo:
12 «No digan ustedes que es conspiración
todo lo que llama conspiración esta gente;
no teman lo que ellos temen
ni se dejen asustar.
13 Solo al Señor de los Ejércitos tendrán ustedes por santo,
solo a él deben honrarlo,
solo a él han de temerlo.
14 Él será un santuario.
Pero será una piedra de tropiezo
para las dos casas de Israel;
una roca que los hará caer.
¡Será para los habitantes de Jerusalén
un lazo y una trampa!
15 Muchos de ellos tropezarán;
caerán y serán quebrantados,
se les tenderán trampas y en ellas quedarán atrapados».
16 Guarda bien el testimonio;
sella la Ley entre mis discípulos.
17 El Señor ha escondido su rostro del pueblo de Jacob,
pero yo esperaré en él,
pues en él tengo puesta mi esperanza.
18 Aquí me tienen, con los hijos que el Señor me ha dado. Somos en Israel señales y presagios del Señor de los Ejércitos, que habita en el monte Sión.
19 Si alguien les dice: «Consulten a las médiums y a los espiritistas que susurran y musitan; ¿acaso no es deber de un pueblo consultar a sus dioses y a los muertos en favor de los vivos?», 20 yo les digo: «¡Aténganse a la Ley y al testimonio!». Para quienes no se atengan a esto no habrá un amanecer. 21 Ustedes habrán de enfurecerse cuando, angustiados y hambrientos, vaguen por la tierra. Levantando los ojos al cielo, maldecirán a su rey y a su Dios 22 y, clavando la mirada en la tierra, solo verán aflicción, tinieblas y espantosa penumbra; ¡serán arrojados a una oscuridad total!

8 El Señor me dijo: «Toma una tabla grande y escribe en ella, con letras comunes y corrientes: “Maher-salal-hasbaz.” 2 Toma luego como testigos de confianza al sacerdote Urías y a Zacarías, el hijo de Jeberequías.»
3 Más tarde me uní a la profetisa, mi esposa, y ella quedó encinta y tuvo un niño. Entonces el Señor me dijo: «Ponle por nombre Maher-salal-hasbaz. 4 Porque antes de que el niño sepa decir “papá” y “mamá”, Damasco y Samaria serán saqueadas, y sus riquezas serán llevadas al rey de Asiria.» 5 Y de nuevo me dijo el Señor:
6 «Ya que por miedo a Resín y al hijo de Remalías
desprecia esta gente el agua de Siloé,
que corre mansamente,
7 el Señor los va a inundar
con la violenta corriente del río Éufrates
(es decir, el rey de Asiria con todo su poder).
Se desbordará por todos sus canales,
se saldrá por todas las orillas,
8 pasará hasta Judá y la cubrirá, la inundará,
le llegará hasta el cuello.
Será como un ave con las alas extendidas,
que cubrirá, Emanuel, toda tu tierra.»
9 Reúnanse, naciones, y llénense de espanto;
escuchen esto, todos los países lejanos:
por más que tomen las armas, quedarán espantados;
sí, por más que tomen las armas, quedarán espantados.
10 Hagan planes, que serán desbaratados;
propongan lo que quieran, que no se realizará,
porque Dios está con nosotros.
Al Señor es a quien hay que temer
11 El Señor me tomó fuertemente con su mano y me advirtió que no siguiera el camino de esta gente. Me dijo: 12 «No llamen ustedes conspiración a todo lo que este pueblo llama conspiración. No se asusten ni tengan miedo por todo lo que a ellos les da miedo. 13 Al Señor todopoderoso es a quien hay que tener por santo; a él es a quien hay que temer; hay que tener miedo en su presencia. 14 Él será para ustedes como una trampa; será la piedra con la que tropezarán, la cual hará caer a los dos reinos de Israel; será como una trampa en la que caerán los habitantes de Jerusalén. 15 Muchos tropezarán, caerán y morirán; muchos caerán en la trampa, y quedarán atrapados.»
Advertencias de Isaías a sus discípulos
16 Guarden bien este mensaje;
mantengan ocultas estas instrucciones, estas enseñanzas mías.
17 Aunque el Señor se oculta del pueblo de Jacob,
yo confío en él.
En él he puesto mi esperanza.
18 Yo y los hijos que me dio el Señor
somos señales milagrosas para Israel,
puestas por el Señor todopoderoso
que vive en el monte Sión.
19 Sin duda la gente les dirá a ustedes:
«Consulten a los espíritus de los muertos
y a esos adivinos que cuchichean y susurran.
¿Acaso no debe un pueblo consultar a sus dioses,
y pedir consejo a los muertos acerca de los vivos
20 para recibir una instrucción o un mensaje?»
Sin duda que hablarán así,
pero lo que dicen es una tontería.
21 La gente irá de una parte a otra,
oprimida y con hambre,
y por el hambre se pondrán furiosos.
Maldecirán a su rey y a sus dioses.
Volverán la cara hacia arriba
22 y después mirarán al suelo,
y no encontrarán más que miseria y oscuridad,
tinieblas y angustia.
Todo lo cubrirá la noche.
