Yahweh Helps His Servant

50 Thus says Yahweh,

“Where is the (A)certificate of divorce
By which I have (B)sent your mother away?
Or to which of My creditors did I (C)sell you?
Behold, you were sold for your (D)iniquities,
And for your (E)transgressions your mother (F)was sent away.
Why was there (G)no man when I came?
When I called, why was there none to answer?
Is My (H)hand so short that it cannot ransom?
Or have I no power to deliver?
Behold, I (I)dry up the sea with My rebuke;
I (J)make the rivers a wilderness;
Their fish stink for lack of water
And die of thirst.
I (K)clothe the heavens with blackness
And make sackcloth their covering.”

Lord Yahweh has given Me the tongue of (L)disciples,
That I may know how to (M)sustain the weary one with a word.
He awakens Me (N)morning by morning;
He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.
Lord Yahweh has (O)opened My ear;
And I did (P)not rebel
Nor did I turn back.
I (Q)gave My back to those who strike Me,
And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard;
I did not hide My face from dishonor and spitting.
Even now Lord Yahweh (R)helps Me,
Therefore, I am (S)not dishonored;
Therefore, I have set My face like (T)flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.
He who [a](U)vindicates Me is near;
Who will contend with Me?
Let us (V)stand up to each other;
Who has a judgment against Me?
Let him approach Me.
Behold, (W)Lord Yahweh helps Me;
(X)Who is he who condemns Me?
Behold, (Y)they will all wear out like a garment;
The moth will eat them.
10 Who is among you that fears Yahweh,
That listens to the voice of His (Z)Servant,
That (AA)walks in darkness and has no light?
Let him (AB)trust in the name of Yahweh and rely on his God.
11 Behold, all you who (AC)kindle a fire,
Who gird yourselves with firebrands,
Walk in the light of your fire
And among the brands you have set ablaze.
This you will have from My hand:
You will (AD)lie down in torment.

  1. Isaiah 50:8 Or justifies, cf. 53:11

50 Thus saith Hashem, Where is the Sefer Keritut (Bill of Divorce) by which I sent your Em (Mother) away? Or which Nosheh (Creditor) of Mine is it to whom I have sold you [into slavery]? Behold, for your avonot (iniquities) have ye been sold, and for your peysha’im (rebellions) was your Em sent away.

Why, when I came, was there no ish (man [at all] to respond)? When I called, was there none to answer? Is My Yad too short, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no ko’ach (power) to save? Behold, at My rebuke I dry up the yam (sea), I make the neharot (rivers) a midbar (desert); their dag (fish) stink, because there is no mayim, and die of tzama (thirst).

I clothe Shomayim with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

Adonoi Hashem hath given Me [Moshiach; see 2Sm.7:5; Zech.3:8 and Isa 52:13] the leshon limmudim (learned tongue of disciples; see 8:16), that I should know how to speak a devar (word, i.e., word of consolation) in season to him that is weary; He wakeneth baboker baboker (morning by morning), He wakeneth Mine ozen (ear) to hear as the limmudim (disciples, those being taught).

Adonoi Hashem hath opened Mine ozen (ear), and I was not rebellious, neither did I turn back [cf. Gn 3:8].

I [Moshiach] offered My gev (back) to them that deliver blows, and My lekhi (cheeks) to them that pulled out [the beard]: I hid not My face from kelimot (humiliations, shame) and rok (spitting, saliva).

For Adonoi Hashem will help Me [Moshiach]; therefore shall I not be disgraced; therefore have I set My face [as hard] as khalamish (flint [See OJBC Lk 9:51]), and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

He that vindicateth [i.e., maintains My Righteousness] is karov (near), who will contend with Me? Let us stand together. Who is Mine Ba’al Mishpat (Adversary in court, the one bringing charges)? Let him draw near to [confront] Me [in court].

See, Adonoi Hashem will help Me [Moshiach]. Who is he that shall condemn Me? See, they all shall wear out like a beged (garment); the ahsh (moth) shall eat them.

10 Who among you that feareth Hashem, that obeyeth the voice of His Eved [Moshiach], though he may have walked in chashekhim (darknesses), with no gleam of light for himself, let him trust B’Shem Hashem, and lean upon Elohav.

11 See, all ye that kindle an eish (fire), ye that prepare for battle with zikot (flashing firebrands), walk in the light of the fire of your [own making] and among the zikot (flashing firebrands) that ye have set burning, and this shall ye have from My Yad; ye shall lie down in ma’atze’vah (torment, pain, grieving [See Isa 66:24; Dan 12:2; Ps 75:8]).

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience

50 This is what the Lord says:

“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce(A)
    with which I sent her away?
Or to which of my creditors
    did I sell(B) you?
Because of your sins(C) you were sold;(D)
    because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.
When I came, why was there no one?
    When I called, why was there no one to answer?(E)
Was my arm too short(F) to deliver you?
    Do I lack the strength(G) to rescue you?
By a mere rebuke(H) I dry up the sea,(I)
    I turn rivers into a desert;(J)
their fish rot for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
I clothe the heavens with darkness(K)
    and make sackcloth(L) its covering.”

The Sovereign Lord(M) has given me a well-instructed tongue,(N)
    to know the word that sustains the weary.(O)
He wakens me morning by morning,(P)
    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.(Q)
The Sovereign Lord(R) has opened my ears;(S)
    I have not been rebellious,(T)
    I have not turned away.
I offered my back to those who beat(U) me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;(V)
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.(W)
Because the Sovereign Lord(X) helps(Y) me,
    I will not be disgraced.
Therefore have I set my face like flint,(Z)
    and I know I will not be put to shame.(AA)
He who vindicates(AB) me is near.(AC)
    Who then will bring charges against me?(AD)
    Let us face each other!(AE)
Who is my accuser?
    Let him confront me!
It is the Sovereign Lord(AF) who helps(AG) me.
    Who will condemn(AH) me?
They will all wear out like a garment;
    the moths(AI) will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears(AJ) the Lord
    and obeys(AK) the word of his servant?(AL)
Let the one who walks in the dark,
    who has no light,(AM)
trust(AN) in the name of the Lord
    and rely on their God.
11 But now, all you who light fires
    and provide yourselves with flaming torches,(AO)
go, walk in the light of your fires(AP)
    and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from my hand:(AQ)
    You will lie down in torment.(AR)

50 Thus saith Jehovah, Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement, wherewith I have put her away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities were ye sold, and for your transgressions was your mother put away. Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stink, because there is no water, and die for thirst. I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

The Lord Jehovah hath given me the tongue of [a]them that are taught, that I may know how [b]to sustain with words him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as [c]they that are taught. The Lord Jehovah hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away backward. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord Jehovah will help me; therefore have I not been confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand up together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord Jehovah will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? behold, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

10 Who is among you that feareth Jehovah, that obeyeth the voice of his servant? [d]he that walketh in darkness, and hath no light, let him trust in the name of Jehovah, and rely upon his God. 11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that gird yourselves about with firebrands; walk ye in the flame of your fire, and among the brands that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of my hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.
