The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen^(A) to me, you islands;^(B)
    hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born^(C) the Lord called^(D) me;
    from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.^(E)
²He made my mouth^(F) like a sharpened sword,^(G)
    in the shadow of his hand^(H) he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow^(I)
    and concealed me in his quiver.
³He said to me, “You are my servant,^(J)
    Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.^(K)”
⁴But I said, “I have labored in vain;^(L)
    I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,^(M)
    and my reward^(N) is with my God.”^(O)

⁵And now the Lord says—
    he who formed me in the womb^(P) to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
    and gather Israel^(Q) to himself,
for I am^[a] honored^(R) in the eyes of the Lord
    and my God has been my strength^(S)—
⁶he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant^(T)
    to restore the tribes of Jacob
    and bring back those of Israel I have kept.^(U)
I will also make you a light^(V) for the Gentiles,^(W)
    that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”^(X)

⁸But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”^[a]^(A) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: ⁹If you declare^(B) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”^(C) and believe^(D) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,^(E) you will be saved.^(F) ¹⁰For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. ¹¹As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”^[b]^(G) ¹²For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile^(H)—the same Lord is Lord of all^(I) and richly blesses all who call on him, ¹³for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord^(J) will be saved.”^[c]^(K)

¹⁴How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? ¹⁵And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”^[d]^(L)

¹⁶But not all the Israelites accepted the good news.^(M) For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”^[e]^(N) ¹⁷Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message,^(O) and the message is heard through the word about Christ.^(P)

¹⁶Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.^(A) ¹⁷When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. ¹⁸Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.^(B) ¹⁹Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,^(C) baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,^(D) ²⁰and teaching^(E) them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you^(F) always, to the very end of the age.”^(G)
