Isaiah 26
New American Standard Bible
Song of Trust in God’s Protection
26 (A)On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
“We have a (B)strong city;
He sets up walls and ramparts for [a](C)security.
2 Open the (D)gates, that the (E)righteous nation may enter,
The one that [b]remains faithful.
3 The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect (F)peace,
Because he trusts in You.
4 (G)Trust in the Lord forever,
For in [c]God the Lord, we have an everlasting (H)Rock.
5 For He has brought low those who dwell on high, the (I)unassailable city;
(J)He lays it low, He lays it low to the ground, He casts it to the dust.
6 (K)The foot will trample it,
The feet of the (L)poor, the steps of the helpless.”
7 The (M)way of the righteous is smooth;
O Upright One, (N)make the path of the righteous level.
8 Indeed, while following the way of (O)Your judgments, Lord,
We have waited for You eagerly;
(P)Your name, and (Q)remembering You, is the desire of our souls.
9 (R)At night [d]my soul longs for You,
Indeed, [e]my spirit within me (S)seeks You diligently;
For when the earth [f]experiences Your judgments,
The inhabitants of the world (T)learn righteousness.
10 Though the wicked person is shown compassion,
He does not (U)learn righteousness;
He (V)deals unjustly in the land of uprightness,
And does not perceive the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, Your hand is lifted up, yet they (W)do not see it.
[g]They see (X)Your zeal for the people and are put to shame;
Indeed, [h](Y)fire will devour Your enemies.
12 Lord, You will establish (Z)peace for us,
Since You have also performed for us all our works.
13 Lord, our God, (AA)other masters besides You have ruled us;
But through You alone we [i](AB)confess Your name.
14 (AC)The dead will not live, the [j]departed spirits will not rise;
Therefore You have (AD)punished and destroyed them,
And You have eliminated all remembrance of them.
15 (AE)You have increased the nation, Lord,
You have increased the nation, You are glorified;
You have (AF)extended all the borders of the land.
16 Lord, they sought You (AG)in distress;
They [k]could only whisper a prayer,
Your discipline was upon them.
17 (AH)As the pregnant woman approaches the time to give birth,
She writhes and cries out in her labor pains;
This is how we were before You, Lord.
18 We were pregnant, we writhed in labor,
We (AI)gave birth, as it seems, only to wind.
We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth,
Nor were (AJ)inhabitants of the world [l]born.
19 Your (AK)dead will live;
[m]Their corpses will rise.
You who lie in the dust, (AL)awake and shout for joy,
For your dew is as the dew of the [n]dawn,
And the earth will [o]give birth to the [p]departed spirits.
20 Come, my people, (AM)enter your rooms
And close your doors behind you;
Hide for a little [q](AN)while
Until (AO)indignation [r]runs its course.
21 For behold, the Lord is about to (AP)come out from His place
To (AQ)punish the inhabitants of the earth for their wrongdoing;
And the earth will (AR)reveal her bloodshed
And will no longer cover her slain.

Yeshayah 26
Orthodox Jewish Bible
26 In that day shall this shir (song) be sung in Eretz Yehudah; We have an Ir Oz (a city of strength); Yeshuah (salvation) is that which He makes [its] chomot (walls) and outer wall.
2 Open ye the She’arim, that the Goy Tzaddik (right-with-G-d people) which is shomer emunim (keeping faith) may enter in.
3 Thou wilt keep him in shalom shalom, whose yetzer (mind-set) is stayed on Thee; because he trusteth in Thee.
4 Trust ye in Hashem forever; for in G-d Hashem is Tzur Olamin;
5 For He bringeth down them that dwell on marom (high); the lofty city, He layeth it low; He layeth it low, even ad eretz; He bringeth it even to aphar (dust).
6 The regel (foot) shall trample it down, even the feet of the oni (oppressed), and the footsteps of the dalim (poor, downtrodden, needy).
7 The Orakh Latzaddik (way of the just) is meiysharim (altogether level, upright, direct ones); Thou, O Yashar (Upright One, Straight One), straighten the ma’agal (circuit) of the tzaddik.
8 Indeed, in the orakh of Thy mishpatim, Hashem, have we waited for Thee; our ta’avat nefesh (yearning of soul) is for Thy Shem, and for the zekher (memory, remembrance) of Thee.
9 With my nefesh have I desired thee in the lailah; yes, with my ruach within me will I seek Thee; for when Thy mishpatim are upon ha’aretz, the inhabitants of the tevel will learn tzedek.
10 Let grace be shown to the rasha, yet he will not learn tzedek; in the Eretz Nekhochot (Land of Straightforwardness) he will deal unjustly, and will not regard the ge’ut Hashem (majesty, exaltedness of Hashem).
11 Hashem, when Thy Yad (hand, power) is lifted up, they will not see; but let them see and be ashamed of their kinat Am (envy of [G-d’s] people); indeed, the eish of Thine enemies shall devour them.
12 Hashem, Thou wilt ordain shalom for us; for Thou also hast wrought all our ma’asim (works, deeds) in us.
13 Hashem Eloheinu, other adonim besides Thee have had dominion over us; but by Thee only do we keep Thy Shem in remembrance.
14 They are mesim (dead ones), they shall not live; they are refa’im (dead ones) [see Job 26:5], they shall not rise; therefore Thou hast visited and destroyed them, and made all their zekher (memory) to perish.
15 Thou hast increased the Goy (nation, people), Hashem, Thou hast increased the Goy; Thou hast gained glory; Thou hadst extended all the borders of the Eretz.
16 Hashem, in tzoros have they visited Thee, they davened a lachash (whisper) when Thy musar (chastening) was upon them.
17 Like a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, in travail, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in Thy sight, Hashem.
18 We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth ruach (wind); we have not wrought yeshu’ot (salvation of any kind) in Eretz; neither have inhabitants of the tevel (world) been born.
19 Thy mesim (dead men, see also Dan 12:2) shall live, together with my nevelah (dead bodies, corpses) shall they arise. Awake and sing for joy, ye that dwell in aphar (dust); for Thy tal (dew) is like the orot tal (morning dew), and Eretz shall give birth to repha’im (dead ones).
20 Come, My people, enter thou into thy chederim, and shut thy delatot behind thee; hide thyself for a little rega (moment, while), until the za’am (wrath, indignation [of G-d]) has passed.
21 For, hinei, Hashem goeth forth from His Makom (place, home) to punish the avon (iniquity) of inhabitants of ha’aretz; ha’aretz also shall disclose her dahm, and shall no more cover over her slain.
Isaiah 26
Living Bible
26 Listen to them singing! In that day the whole land of Judah will sing this song:
“Our city is strong! We are surrounded by the walls of his salvation!” 2 Open the gates to everyone, for all may enter in who love the Lord. 3 He will keep in perfect peace all those who trust in him, whose thoughts turn often to the Lord! 4 Trust in the Lord God always, for in the Lord Jehovah is your everlasting strength. 5 He humbles the proud and brings the haughty city to the dust; its walls come crashing down. 6 He presents it to the poor and needy for their use.
7 But for good men the path is not uphill and rough! God does not give them a rough and treacherous path, but smooths the road before them. 8 O Lord, we love to do your will! Our hearts’ desire is to glorify your name. 9 All night long I search for you; earnestly I seek for God; for only when you come in judgment on the earth to punish it will people turn away from wickedness and do what is right.
10 Your kindness to the wicked doesn’t make them good; they keep on doing wrong and take no notice of your majesty. 11 They do not listen when you threaten; they will not look to see your upraised fist. Show them how much you love your people. Perhaps then they will be ashamed! Yes, let them be burned up by the fire reserved for your enemies.
12 Lord, grant us peace; for all we have and are has come from you. 13 O Lord our God, once we worshiped other gods; but now we worship you alone. 14 Those we served before are dead and gone; never again will they return. You came against them and destroyed them, and they are long forgotten. 15 O praise the Lord! He has made our nation very great. He has widened the boundaries of our land!
16 Lord, in their distress they sought for you. When your punishment was on them, they poured forth a whispered prayer. 17 How we missed your presence, Lord! We suffered as a woman giving birth who cries and writhes in pain. 18 We too have writhed in agony, but all to no avail. No deliverance has come from all our efforts. 19 Yet we have this assurance: Those who belong to God shall live again. Their bodies shall rise again! Those who dwell in the dust shall awake and sing for joy! For God’s light of life will fall like dew upon them!
20 Go home, my people, and lock the doors! Hide for a little while until the Lord’s wrath against your enemies has passed. 21 Look! The Lord is coming from the heavens to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will no longer hide the murderers. The guilty will be found.
