Quân Phi-li-tin chuẩn bị chiến tranh
28 Về sau quân Phi-li-tin tập họp binh sĩ lại để đánh dân Ít-ra-en. A-kích bảo Đa-vít, “Anh nên biết rằng anh và những người đi theo phải gia nhập hàng ngũ ta.”
2 Đa-vít trả lời, “Bây giờ vua sẽ thấy tận mắt những gì tôi, kẻ tôi tớ vua, có thể làm!”
A-kích bảo, “Tốt, vậy ta cử ngươi làm cận vệ vĩnh viễn cho ta.”
Sau-lơ cầu bà bóng ở Ên-đô-rơ
3 Lúc ấy Sa-mu-ên đã qua đời, nên toàn dân Ít-ra-en than khóc ông. Họ chôn cất ông trong thị trấn quê nhà ông ở Ra-ma.
Sau-lơ đã trừ khử tất cả những đồng cốt và thầy bói ra khỏi xứ.
4 Quân Phi-li-tin tập họp lại và đóng quân ở Su-nem. Sau-lơ cũng tập họp tất cả người Ít-ra-en lại và đóng quân ở Ghinh-bô-a. 5 Khi Sau-lơ nhìn thấy đạo quân Phi-li-tin thì đâm ra sợ hãi, tim đập thình thịch. 6 Ông cầu nguyện cùng CHÚA nhưng Ngài không trả lời dù qua chiêm bao, U-rim, hay qua các nhà tiên tri. 7 Sau-lơ liền bảo các đầy tớ, “Hãy tìm cho ta một bà đồng bóng để ta hỏi thăm về chuyện nầy.”
Các đầy tớ thưa, “Có một bà bóng ở Ên-đô-rơ.” [a]
8 Sau-lơ liền ăn mặc giả dạng, cùng hai cận vệ đi đến bà bóng lúc ban đêm. Sau-lơ bảo bà, “Hãy cầu một vong linh cho tôi. Triệu lên cho tôi người tôi sẽ nói tên.”
9 Nhưng bà ấy đáp, “Chắc ông biết điều Sau-lơ đã làm. Ông ta đã trừ khử tất cả đồng bóng và thầy bói ra khỏi xứ rồi. Bộ ông gài bẫy để giết tôi hay sao?”
10 Sau-lơ nhân danh CHÚA cam kết với người đàn bà, “Tôi hứa trong danh CHÚA là chị sẽ không gặp lôi thôi gì đâu.”
11 Người đàn bà hỏi, “Vậy ông muốn tôi triệu ai lên?”
Sau-lơ đáp, “Triệu Sa-mu-ên lên cho tôi.”
12 Khi nhìn thấy Sa-mu-ên thì người đàn bà rú lên. Bà ta bảo, “Sao ông gạt tôi? Ông là Sau-lơ!”
13 Vua trấn an người đàn bà, “Đừng sợ! Chị thấy gì?”
Người đàn bà đáp, “Tôi thấy một thần linh từ dưới đất [b] lên.”
14 Sau-lơ hỏi, “Ông ta hình dáng ra sao?”
Người đàn bà trả lời, “Ông ta là một cụ già mặc áo dài đang hiện lên.”
Lúc đó Sau-lơ biết đúng là Sa-mu-ên liền cúi mọp xuống đất. 15 Sa-mu-ên hỏi Sau-lơ, “Sao ngươi quấy rầy ta, triệu ta lên làm gì?”
Sau-lơ đáp, “Tôi đang gặp khốn đốn. Quân Phi-li-tin đang tấn công tôi, Thượng Đế đã rời khỏi tôi. Ngài không trả lời tôi nữa dù qua các nhà tiên tri hay qua chiêm bao. Vì thế mà tôi cầu đến ông. Bây giờ xin ông cho tôi biết phải làm sao.”
16 Sa-mu-ên bảo, “CHÚA đã từ bỏ ngươi và trở nên kẻ thù ngươi. Vậy ngươi cầu hỏi ta làm gì? 17 Ngài thường cho ta biết trước điều Ngài sẽ làm; và hiện nay Ngài đang làm điều đó. Ngài lấy nước ra khỏi tay ngươi và giao cho một trong những láng giềng ngươi là Đa-vít. 18 Ngươi đã không vâng lời CHÚA; ngươi đã không thi hành cơn thịnh nộ của Ngài đối với dân A-ma-léc. Vì thế mà hôm nay Ngài khiến ngươi lâm hoàn cảnh nầy. 19 CHÚA sẽ trao cả Ít-ra-en lẫn ngươi vào tay dân Phi-li-tin. Ngày mai ngươi và các con trai ngươi sẽ ở cùng một chỗ với ta. CHÚA sẽ trao toàn thể đạo quân Ít-ra-en vào tay quân Phi-li-tin.”
20 Sau khi nghe những lời Sa-mu-ên nói thì Sau-lơ hoảng sợ té nằm dài trên đất. Vua đuối sức vì cả ngày và đêm đó chưa ăn uống gì.
21 Khi người đàn bà đến gần Sau-lơ thì thấy ông đang kinh hoàng. Bà bảo, “Nầy, tôi, kẻ tôi tớ ông đã vâng lời ông. Tôi đã liều mạng làm điều ông bảo tôi. 22 Bây giờ xin nghe tôi. Mời ông ăn món gì để ông lại sức mà lên đường.”
23 Nhưng Sau-lơ từ chối bảo rằng, “Tôi không ăn đâu.”
Tuy nhiên các đầy tớ và người đàn bà ép nài cho nên ông chịu ăn. Ông đứng lên khỏi đất và ngồi trên giường. 24 Người đàn bà có một con bò con mập liền giết nó rồi lấy bột nhồi làm bánh không men. 25 Bà bày thức ăn trước mặt họ, và tất cả đều ăn. Đêm đó họ đứng dậy ra đi.

28 Vào lúc ấy, người Phi-li-tin tập họp lực lượng ra trận đánh dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Vua A-kích bảo Đa-vít: “Nhà ngươi phải biết rõ rằng ngươi và thuộc hạ của ngươi phải theo ta ra trận.” 2 Đa-vít tâu: “Xin tuân lệnh. Chính vua sẽ biết tôi tớ vua làm được gì.” Vua A-kích đáp: “Tốt lắm! Ta sẽ đặt ngươi làm vệ sĩ cho ta suốt đời.”
Vua Sau-lơ Và Bà Đồng Bóng Ở Ên-đô-rơ
3 Lúc bấy giờ, ông Sa-mu-ên đã qua đời. Toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã than khóc và chôn cất ông tại quê hương ông là thành Ra-ma. Vua Sau-lơ cũng đã trục xuất những người làm nghề đồng bóng ra khỏi xứ.
4 Quân Phi-li-tin tập họp lại và đến đóng trại gần thành Su-nem. Vua Sau-lơ tập họp toàn quân Y-sơ-ra-ên và đóng trại trên núi Ghinh-bô-a.[a] 5 Khi vua Sau-lơ thấy trại quân Phi-li-tin, vua sợ hãi, tim vua đập mạnh. 6 Vua Sau-lơ cầu hỏi ý CHÚA, nhưng CHÚA không đáp lời, dù qua giấc mộng, hoặc qua thẻ U-rim, hoặc qua các tiên tri. 7 Vua Sau-lơ bảo các triều thần: “Hãy tìm cho ta một bà đồng bóng để ta đi hỏi ý bà.” Triều thần tâu: “Thưa có một bà đồng bóng ở làng Ên-đô-rơ.”[b]
8 Vua Sau-lơ cải trang, mặc quần áo khác, và ban đêm, đi cùng với hai người đến nhà người đàn bà. Vua bảo bà: “Xin bà ngồi hầu bóng và cho tôi biết việc sắp xảy ra. Xin bà gọi lên hồn của người tôi sẽ nói cho bà biết.” 9 Người đàn bà đáp: “Nhưng ông thừa biết vua Sau-lơ đã bài trừ mọi việc lên đồng ngồi bóng trong xứ. Sao ông lại còn gài bẫy để giết tôi?” 10 Vua Sau-lơ nhân danh CHÚA thề với bà: “Có CHÚA Hằng Sống, bà sẽ không mắc tội về việc này.” 11 Người đàn bà hỏi: “Ông muốn tôi gọi ai lên?” Vua đáp: “Bà gọi ông Sa-mu-ên lên cho tôi.” 12 Khi bà thấy ông Sa-mu-ên, bà rú lên một tiếng khủng khiếp, và nói với vua Sau-lơ: “Tại sao bệ hạ đánh lừa tôi? Bệ hạ chính là vua Sau-lơ đây!” 13 Vua trấn an bà: “Bà đừng sợ. Hãy cho ta biết[c] bà thấy gì?” Bà tâu: “Tôi thấy một vị thần từ dưới đất đi lên.” 14 Vua hỏi: “Hình dáng vị ấy ra sao?” Bà thưa: “Một cụ già đang đi lên, mình quấn áo choàng.” Vua Sau-lơ biết chắc ấy là ông Sa-mu-ên. Vua quì sấp mặt xuống đất mà lạy.
15 Ông Sa-mu-ên hỏi vua Sau-lơ: “Sao vua quấy rầy tôi, gọi tôi lên làm chi?” Vua Sau-lơ đáp: “Con gặp tình thế nguy cấp quá. Quân Phi-li-tin đang giao chiến với con, và Đức Chúa Trời đã lìa bỏ con. Ngài không còn đáp lời con nữa, dù qua các tiên tri, hoặc qua giấc mộng. Vì thế con buộc lòng phải gọi ông lên để chỉ cho con biết điều gì phải làm.”
16 Ông Sa-mu-ên nói: “Tại sao vua lại hỏi tôi trong khi CHÚA đã lìa bỏ vua và trở thành kẻ thù của vua? 17 CHÚA thực hiện điều Ngài nói trước đây: CHÚA lấy ngôi nước khỏi tay vua và giao cho Đa-vít, người láng giềng của vua. 18 Vua không vâng lời CHÚA, không thi hành án phạt do cơn thịnh nộ của Ngài đối với dân A-ma-léc, cho nên hôm nay CHÚA khiến việc này xảy ra cho vua. 19 CHÚA sẽ giao vua và dân Y-sơ-ra-ên vào tay quân Phi-li-tin. Ngày mai vua và các con trai vua sẽ ở với tôi. CHÚA cũng sẽ giao trại quân Y-sơ-ra-ên vào tay quân Phi-li-tin.”
20 Nghe ông Sa-mu-ên nói, vua Sau-lơ hoảng sợ ngã nằm dài xuống đất. Hơn nữa, vua cũng đã kiệt sức, vì không ăn gì hết suốt ngày và suốt đêm hôm ấy.
21 Người đàn bà đến bên vua Sau-lơ; thấy vua quá sợ hãi, bà nói: “Tôi là đầy tớ của bệ hạ, tôi đã vâng lời bệ hạ, liều mạng làm theo lời bệ hạ truyền. 22 Bây giờ, xin bệ hạ vui lòng nghe đầy tớ bệ hạ nói, để tôi dọn chút thức ăn bệ hạ dùng cho lại sức trước khi lên đường.” 23 Vua từ chối: “Ta không ăn.” Nhưng các triều thần và ngay cả người đàn bà cứ năn nỉ mãi nên vua nghe theo họ. Vua nhổm dậy khỏi đất và ngồi lên giường.
24 Người đàn bà có vỗ béo một con bê trong nhà. Bà vội vàng làm thịt con bê, rồi bà lấy bột nhồi và nướng bánh không men. 25 Bà dọn lên cho vua Sau-lơ và triều thần. Ăn xong, họ đứng dậy và ra đi ngay đêm ấy.

28 In those days the Philistines gathered(A) their forces to fight against Israel. Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men will accompany me in the army.”
2 David said, “Then you will see for yourself what your servant can do.”
Achish replied, “Very well, I will make you my bodyguard(B) for life.”
Saul and the Medium at Endor
3 Now Samuel was dead,(C) and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah.(D) Saul had expelled(E) the mediums and spiritists(F) from the land.
4 The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem,(G) while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa.(H) 5 When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror(I) filled his heart. 6 He inquired(J) of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams(K) or Urim(L) or prophets.(M) 7 Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium,(N) so I may go and inquire of her.”
“There is one in Endor,(O)” they said.
8 So Saul disguised(P) himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult(Q) a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.”
9 But the woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off(R) the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap(S) for my life to bring about my death?”
10 Saul swore to her by the Lord, “As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this.”
11 Then the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?”
“Bring up Samuel,” he said.
12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me?(T) You are Saul!”
13 The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?”
The woman said, “I see a ghostly figure[a] coming up out of the earth.”(U)
14 “What does he look like?” he asked.
“An old man wearing a robe(V) is coming up,” she said.
Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.
15 Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”
“I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed(W) from me. He no longer answers(X) me, either by prophets or by dreams.(Y) So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
16 Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy? 17 The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn(Z) the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. 18 Because you did not obey(AA) the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath(AB) against the Amalekites,(AC) the Lord has done this to you today. 19 The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons(AD) will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”
20 Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel’s words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and all that night.
21 When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly shaken, she said, “Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life(AE) in my hands and did what you told me to do. 22 Now please listen to your servant and let me give you some food so you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.”
23 He refused(AF) and said, “I will not eat.”
But his men joined the woman in urging him, and he listened to them. He got up from the ground and sat on the couch.
24 The woman had a fattened calf(AG) at the house, which she butchered at once. She took some flour, kneaded it and baked bread without yeast. 25 Then she set it before Saul and his men, and they ate. That same night they got up and left.

3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.

5 And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.
6 And when Saul enquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.
8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
9 And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
10 And Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.
12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.
13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
14 And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
16 Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
17 And the Lord hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the Lord hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:
18 Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the Lord done this thing unto thee this day.
19 Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the Lord also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
20 Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.
21 And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me.
22 Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.
23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.
24 And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof:
25 And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
