12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.(A) 13 But encourage one another daily,(B) as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.(C) 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold(D) our original conviction firmly to the very end.(E) 15 As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion.”[a](F)

11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.(A)

11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope(A) for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate(B) those who through faith and patience(C) inherit what has been promised.(D)

23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope(A) we profess,(B) for he who promised is faithful.(C) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,(D) 25 not giving up meeting together,(E) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another(F)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(G)

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning(H) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,(I) no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire(J) that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(K) 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God(L) underfoot,(M) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant(N) that sanctified them,(O) and who has insulted the Spirit(P) of grace?(Q) 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[a](R) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[b](S) 31 It is a dreadful thing(T) to fall into the hands(U) of the living God.(V)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(W) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(X) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(Y) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(Z) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(AA) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(AB) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(AC) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(AD) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(AE) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
he who is coming(AF) will come
    and will not delay.”[c](AG)

38 And,

“But my righteous[d] one will live by faith.(AH)
    And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”[e](AI)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
