Hebrews 12 - James 1
New King James Version
The Race of Faith
12 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, (A)let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and (B)let us run (C)with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the [a]author and [b]finisher of our faith, (D)who for the joy that was set before Him (E)endured the cross, despising the shame, and (F)has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The Discipline of God(G)
3 (H)For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, (I)lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. 4 (J)You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:
(K)“My son, do not despise the [c]chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
6 For (L)whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”
7 (M)If[d] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what (N)son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, (O)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to (P)the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, (Q)that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no [e]chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields (R)the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Renew Your Spiritual Vitality(S)
12 Therefore (T)strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
14 (U)Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, (V)without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone (W)fall short of the grace of God; lest any (X)root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any (Y)fornicator or [f]profane person like Esau, (Z)who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was (AA)rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
The Glorious Company
18 For you have not come [g]to (AB)the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and [h]darkness and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it (AC)begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. 20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: (AD)“And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned [i]or shot with an arrow.” 21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, (AE)“I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”)
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the [j]general assembly and church of (AF)the firstborn (AG)who are registered in heaven, to God (AH)the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men (AI)made perfect, 24 to Jesus (AJ)the Mediator of the new covenant, and to (AK)the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things (AL)than that of Abel.
Hear the Heavenly Voice
25 See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For (AM)if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, 26 whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, (AN)“Yet once more I [k]shake not only the earth, but also heaven.” 27 Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the (AO)removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we [l]may (AP)serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For (AQ)our God is a consuming fire.
Concluding Moral Directions
13 Let (AR)brotherly love continue. 2 (AS)Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing (AT)some have unwittingly entertained angels. 3 (AU)Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.
4 (AV)Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; (AW)but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, (AX)“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we may boldly say:
(AY)“The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?”
Concluding Religious Directions
7 Remember those who [m]rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. 8 Jesus Christ is (AZ)the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9 Do not be carried [n]about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.
10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. 11 For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned outside the camp. 12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might [o]sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate. 13 Therefore let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing (BA)His reproach. 14 For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come. 15 (BB)Therefore by Him let us continually offer (BC)the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, (BD)the fruit of our lips, [p]giving thanks to His name. 16 (BE)But do not forget to do good and to share, for (BF)with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
17 (BG)Obey those who [q]rule over you, and be submissive, for (BH)they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
Prayer Requested
18 (BI)Pray for us; for we are confident that we have (BJ)a good conscience, in all things desiring to live honorably. 19 But I especially urge you to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner.
Benediction, Final Exhortation, Farewell
20 Now may (BK)the God of peace (BL)who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, (BM)that great Shepherd of the sheep, (BN)through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 make you [r]complete in every good work to do His will, (BO)working in [s]you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
22 And I appeal to you, brethren, bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written to you in few words. 23 Know that our brother Timothy has been set free, with whom I shall see you if he comes shortly.
24 Greet all those who [t]rule over you, and all the saints. Those from Italy greet you.
25 Grace be with you all. Amen.
Greeting to the Twelve Tribes
1 James, (BP)a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:
Greetings.
Profiting from Trials
2 My brethren, (BQ)count it all joy (BR)when you fall into various trials, 3 (BS)knowing that the testing of your faith produces [u]patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be [v]perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 (BT)If any of you lacks wisdom, (BU)let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and (BV)it will be given to him. 6 (BW)But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is (BX)a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
The Perspective of Rich and Poor
9 Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, 10 but the rich in his humiliation, because (BY)as a flower of the field he will pass away. 11 For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.
Loving God Under Trials
12 (BZ)Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive (CA)the crown of life (CB)which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, (CC)when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, (CD)brings forth death.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 (CE)Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, (CF)with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. 18 (CG)Of His own will He brought us forth by the (CH)word of truth, (CI)that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
Qualities Needed in Trials
19 [w]So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, (CJ)slow to speak, (CK)slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
Doers—Not Hearers Only
21 Therefore (CL)lay aside all filthiness and [x]overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, (CM)which is able to save your souls.
22 But (CN)be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For (CO)if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But (CP)he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, (CQ)this one will be blessed in what he does.
26 If anyone [y]among you thinks he is religious, and (CR)does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. 27 (CS)Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: (CT)to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, (CU)and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Hebrews 12 - James 1
New International Version
12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run(A) with perseverance(B) the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus,(C) the pioneer(D) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,(E) scorning its shame,(F) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.(G) 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary(H) and lose heart.
God Disciplines His Children
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.(I) 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart(J) when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(K)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](L)
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(M) For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(N)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits(O) and live!(P) 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.(Q) 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace(R) for those who have been trained by it.
12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.(S) 13 “Make level paths for your feet,”[b](T) so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.(U)
Warning and Encouragement
14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone(V) and to be holy;(W) without holiness no one will see the Lord.(X) 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God(Y) and that no bitter root(Z) grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16 See that no one is sexually immoral,(AA) or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.(AB) 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears,(AC) he could not change what he had done.
The Mountain of Fear and the Mountain of Joy
18 You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm;(AD) 19 to a trumpet blast(AE) or to such a voice speaking words(AF) that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them,(AG) 20 because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.”[c](AH) 21 The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”[d](AI)
22 But you have come to Mount Zion,(AJ) to the city(AK) of the living God,(AL) the heavenly Jerusalem.(AM) You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn,(AN) whose names are written in heaven.(AO) You have come to God, the Judge of all,(AP) to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,(AQ) 24 to Jesus the mediator(AR) of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood(AS) that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.(AT)
25 See to it that you do not refuse(AU) him who speaks.(AV) If they did not escape when they refused him who warned(AW) them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?(AX) 26 At that time his voice shook the earth,(AY) but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”[e](AZ) 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken(BA)—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,(BB) let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,(BC) 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”[f](BD)
Concluding Exhortations
13 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters.(BE) 2 Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers,(BF) for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.(BG) 3 Continue to remember those in prison(BH) as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
4 Marriage should be honored by all,(BI) and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.(BJ) 5 Keep your lives free from the love of money(BK) and be content with what you have,(BL) because God has said,
6 So we say with confidence,
7 Remember your leaders,(BO) who spoke the word of God(BP) to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate(BQ) their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.(BR)
9 Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings.(BS) It is good for our hearts to be strengthened(BT) by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods,(BU) which is of no benefit to those who do so.(BV) 10 We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle(BW) have no right to eat.(BX)
11 The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering,(BY) but the bodies are burned outside the camp.(BZ) 12 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate(CA) to make the people holy(CB) through his own blood.(CC) 13 Let us, then, go to him(CD) outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore.(CE) 14 For here we do not have an enduring city,(CF) but we are looking for the city that is to come.(CG)
15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice(CH) of praise—the fruit of lips(CI) that openly profess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others,(CJ) for with such sacrifices(CK) God is pleased.
17 Have confidence in your leaders(CL) and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you(CM) as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
18 Pray for us.(CN) We are sure that we have a clear conscience(CO) and desire to live honorably in every way. 19 I particularly urge you to pray so that I may be restored to you soon.(CP)
Benediction and Final Greetings
20 Now may the God of peace,(CQ) who through the blood of the eternal covenant(CR) brought back from the dead(CS) our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,(CT) 21 equip you with everything good for doing his will,(CU) and may he work in us(CV) what is pleasing to him,(CW) through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.(CX)
22 Brothers and sisters, I urge you to bear with my word of exhortation, for in fact I have written to you quite briefly.(CY)
23 I want you to know that our brother Timothy(CZ) has been released. If he arrives soon, I will come with him to see you.
24 Greet all your leaders(DA) and all the Lord’s people. Those from Italy(DB) send you their greetings.
25 Grace be with you all.(DC)
1 James,(DD) a servant of God(DE) and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes(DF) scattered(DG) among the nations:
Greetings.(DH)
Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[i] whenever you face trials of many kinds,(DI) 3 because you know that the testing of your faith(DJ) produces perseverance.(DK) 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature(DL) and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,(DM) who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.(DN) 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,(DO) because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded(DP) and unstable(DQ) in all they do.
9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.(DR) 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.(DS) 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat(DT) and withers(DU) the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed.(DV) In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(DW) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(DX) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(DY)
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(DZ) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(EA) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(EB)
16 Don’t be deceived,(EC) my dear brothers and sisters.(ED) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(EE) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(EF) who does not change(EG) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(EH) through the word of truth,(EI) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(EJ) of all he created.
Listening and Doing
19 My dear brothers and sisters,(EK) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(EL) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(EM) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of(EN) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,(EO) which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(EP) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,(EQ) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.(ER)
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues(ES) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after(ET) orphans and widows(EU) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(EV)
