Steeds meer volgelingen van Jezus in Samaria
8 Saulus was het helemaal eens met het vonnis over Stefanus. Vanaf die dag kwamen de volgelingen van Jezus in Jeruzalem onder zware druk te staan. Zij werden zo hevig vervolgd dat zij moesten vluchten naar Judea en Samaria. Alleen de apostelen bleven nog in de stad. 2 Enkele gelovige mannen begroeven Stefanus en rouwden over hem. 3 Saulus deed zijn uiterste best de volgelingen van Jezus uit te roeien. Hij drong, niets en niemand ontziend, hun huizen binnen, sleurde mannen en vrouwen naar buiten en zette hen in de gevangenis.
4 De volgelingen die uiteengejaagd waren, spraken overal over Jezus en vertelden wat Hij had gedaan. 5 Filippus bijvoorbeeld, ging naar de stad Samaria en vertelde dat Jezus de Christus is. 6 De mensen die naar hem luisterden en zagen welke buitengewone dingen hij deed, hielden zich aan wat hij zei. 7 Boze geesten gingen, onder luid geschreeuw, weg uit de vele mensen die er last van hadden. Vele lammen en kreupelen werden genezen. 8 Het was dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat er grote vreugde in de stad heerste.
9 In de stad woonde een zekere Simon, die zich al langer met toverij bezighield en daarmee alle Samaritanen versteld deed staan. Hij deed erg gewichtig en zei dat hij een groot man was. 10 ‘Deze man is wat men de Grote Kracht van God noemt,’ werd er gezegd. 11 En omdat hij de mensen een hele tijd met allerlei toverkunsten had verbaasd, hielden zij zich aan wat hij zei, zowel groot als klein. 12 Maar dat veranderde toen Filippus kwam. Hij vertelde hun over het Koninkrijk van God en over Jezus Christus. De mensen geloofden hem en lieten zich dopen, zowel mannen als vrouwen. 13 Zelfs Simon geloofde wat Filippus zei en liet zich dopen. Hij liep steeds achter Filippus aan en viel van de ene verbazing in de andere, door de wonderlijke dingen die hij voor zijn ogen zag gebeuren.
14 De apostelen in Jeruzalem hoorden dat de bevolking van Samaria in de Here Jezus was gaan geloven. Daarom stuurden zij Petrus en Johannes erheen om eens te kijken. 15 Petrus en Johannes baden voor hen, 16 omdat de nieuwe volgelingen wel in de naam van de Here Jezus gedoopt waren, maar de Heilige Geest nog niet hadden ontvangen. 17 Na het gebed legden zij hun de handen op en de volgelingen ontvingen de Heilige Geest. 18 Toen Simon de Tovenaar zag dat de volgelingen de Heilige Geest ontvingen, doordat Petrus en Johannes hun handen op hen legden, bood hij de twee apostelen geld en zei: 19 ‘Geef ook mij die macht, dan kan iedereen de Heilige Geest ontvangen als ik mijn handen op hem leg.’ 20 ‘Uw geld zal u te gronde richten!’ antwoordde Petrus. ‘Wat God geeft, is niet te koop. 21 U hebt hier part noch deel aan. U staat niet zuiver voor God. Vreselijk dat u met zoʼn voorstel aankomt. 22 Kom toch tot inkeer en smeek God of Hij u wil vergeven dat u zoiets hebt bedacht. 23 Ik zie dat u vergiftigd bent door bitterheid en gevangen zit in uw eigen slechtheid.’ 24 Simon antwoordde: ‘Wilt u de Here voor mij vragen mij niet de straf te geven die u zojuist noemde?’
25 Petrus en Johannes verzekerden de Samaritanen dat zij hen als broeders erkenden. Nadat zij hadden gezegd wat hun door God was opgedragen, vertrokken zij weer naar Jeruzalem. Onderweg maakten zij in vele Samaritaanse dorpen het goede nieuws van Jezus Christus bekend.
26 Filippus ging ook de stad uit, want een engel van God had tegen hem gezegd: ‘Zorg ervoor dat u vanmiddag op de weg van Jeruzalem naar Gaza bent, dat is een eenzame weg.’ 27 Toen Filippus op die weg liep, zag hij een wagen voor zich uit rijden. In die wagen zat een voorname Ethiopiër. Hij was minister van financiën in de regering van koningin Candace van Ethiopië. De man was in Jeruzalem geweest om God te aanbidden en 28 keerde nu naar zijn land terug. Onderweg zat hij hardop te lezen uit het boek van de profeet Jesaja. 29 De Heilige Geest zei tegen Filippus: ‘Haal die wagen in en blijf ernaast lopen.’ 30 Filippus zette de pas erin en toen hij bij de wagen kwam, hoorde hij iemand hardop lezen. Het was uit het boek Jesaja. 31 ‘Begrijpt u wat u leest?’ vroeg hij aan de man in de wagen. ‘Eerlijk gezegd, begrijp ik er niet veel van,’ antwoordde de man. ‘En zeker niet als niemand mij uitleg geeft!’ En hij vroeg Filippus bij hem in de wagen te komen zitten. 32 In het gedeelte dat de Ethiopiër aan het lezen was, zei de profeet Jesaja: ‘Hij was als een schaap dat voor de slacht weggebracht werd. Hij deed zijn mond niet open, zoals een lam stil is terwijl het geschoren wordt. 33 Hij werd vernederd en zijn recht werd hem ontnomen. Wie zal over zijn nageslacht vertellen? Zijn leven is immers van de aarde weggenomen.’ 34 De Ethiopiër vroeg aan Filippus: ‘Heeft Jesaja het hier over zichzelf of over iemand anders?’ 35 Filippus antwoordde dat Jesaja over de Christus sprak. Hij vertelde hem dat Jezus de Christus is, waarbij hij uitging van wat zij zojuist hadden gelezen.
36 Op een gegeven ogenblik reden zij langs een water. ‘Kijk,’ zei de Ethiopiër, ‘daar is water. Wat is erop tegen mij te dopen?’ 37 Filippus antwoordde: ‘Als u met heel uw hart in Jezus gelooft, is er niets op tegen.’ Hij zei daarop: ‘Ik geloof dat Jezus Christus de Zoon van God is.’
38 Hij liet de wagen stilhouden en ging samen met Filippus het water in en Filippus doopte hem. 39 Toen zij uit het water kwamen, nam de Geest van de Here Filippus weg. De Ethiopiër zag dat hij weg was. Hij reisde verder met een hart vol blijdschap. 40 Filippus bleek in Azotus te zijn. Vandaar ging hij naar het noorden en kwam ten slotte in Caesarea. Onderweg sprak hij in alle plaatsen over Jezus Christus.

Persécution et dispersion des croyants
8 Saul avait donné son approbation à l’exécution d’Etienne. A partir de ce jour-là, une violente persécution se déchaîna contre l’Eglise qui était à Jérusalem ; tous les croyants se dispersèrent à travers la Judée et la Samarie, à l’exception des apôtres. 2 Quelques hommes pieux enterrèrent Etienne et le pleurèrent beaucoup. 3 Quant à Saul, il cherchait à détruire l’Eglise, allant de maison en maison pour en arracher les croyants, hommes et femmes, et les jeter en prison.
La prédication de Philippe et le don de l’Esprit en Samarie
4 Les croyants qui s’étaient dispersés parcouraient le pays, en proclamant le message de l’Evangile. 5 Philippe se rendit dans la capitale[a] de la Samarie et prêcha le Messie à la population. 6 Elle se montra tout entière très attentive à ses paroles en l’entendant et en voyant les signes miraculeux qu’il accomplissait. 7 En effet, beaucoup de personnes qui avaient des démons en elles en furent délivrées ; ils sortaient d’elles en poussant de grands cris, et de nombreux paralysés et des infirmes furent guéris. 8 Aussi, toute la ville était-elle dans une grande joie.
9 Or, depuis quelque temps, un homme nommé Simon s’était établi dans la ville et y exerçait la magie. Il émerveillait le peuple de Samarie et prétendait être un grand personnage. 10 Toute la population, du plus petit jusqu’au plus grand, lui accordait donc une grande attention.
– Cet homme, disaient-ils, est la puissance même de Dieu, celle qu’on appelle la « Grande Puissance ».
11 S’ils s’attachaient ainsi à lui, c’était parce que, depuis assez longtemps, il les étonnait par ses actes de magie.
12 Mais quand ils crurent Philippe qui leur annonçait ce qui concerne le royaume de Dieu et Jésus-Christ, ils se firent baptiser, tant les hommes que les femmes. 13 Simon lui-même crut et fut baptisé. Dès lors, il ne quittait plus Philippe, émerveillé par les signes miraculeux et les prodiges extraordinaires qui s’accomplissaient sous ses yeux.
14 Quand les apôtres, restés à Jérusalem, apprirent que les Samaritains avaient accepté la Parole de Dieu, ils déléguèrent auprès d’eux Pierre et Jean. 15 Dès leur arrivée, ceux-ci prièrent pour les nouveaux disciples afin qu’ils reçoivent le Saint-Esprit. 16 En effet, il n’était encore descendu sur aucun d’eux : ils avaient seulement été baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus. 17 Pierre et Jean leur imposèrent donc les mains et ils reçurent l’Esprit Saint.
18 Simon vit que l’Esprit Saint était donné aux croyants quand les apôtres leur imposaient les mains. Alors il leur proposa de l’argent 19 et leur dit : Donnez-moi aussi ce pouvoir pour que ceux à qui j’imposerai les mains reçoivent l’Esprit Saint.
20 Mais Pierre lui répondit : Que ton argent périsse, et toi avec lui, puisque tu t’es imaginé qu’on pouvait se procurer le don de Dieu avec de l’argent ! 21 Tu n’as ni part ni droit dans cette affaire, car ton cœur n’est pas droit devant Dieu. 22 Détourne-toi donc du mal qui est en toi, et demande au Seigneur de te pardonner, s’il est possible, d’avoir eu de telles intentions dans ton cœur. 23 Car, à ce que je vois, tu es rempli d’amertume et de méchanceté et tu es captif du mal.
24 Alors Simon demanda à Pierre et Jean : Priez vous-mêmes le Seigneur pour moi : qu’il ne m’arrive rien de ce que vous avez dit.
25 Pierre et Jean continuèrent à rendre témoignage à Jésus-Christ en annonçant la Parole du Seigneur, puis ils retournèrent à Jérusalem, tout en annonçant l’Evangile dans un grand nombre de villages samaritains.
Philippe et le dignitaire éthiopien
26 Un ange du Seigneur s’adressa à Philippe et lui dit : Lève-toi, pars en direction du sud[b], prends la route qui descend de Jérusalem à Gaza, celle qui est déserte[c].
27 Il se leva immédiatement et se mit en route. Et voici qu’il rencontra un haut dignitaire[d] éthiopien, administrateur des biens de Candace[e], reine d’Ethiopie. Cet homme était venu à Jérusalem pour adorer Dieu. 28 Il était sur le chemin du retour, et, assis dans son char, il lisait à haute voix un passage du prophète Esaïe.
29 L’Esprit dit à Philippe : Avance jusqu’à ce char et marche à côté de lui.
30 Philippe courut et entendit l’Ethiopien lire dans le livre du prophète Esaïe. Alors il lui demanda : Comprends-tu ce que tu lis ?
31 – Comment le pourrais-je, répondit-il, si je n’ai personne pour me l’expliquer ?
Et il invita Philippe à monter s’asseoir à côté de lui.
32 Or, il était en train de lire ce passage de l’Ecriture :
Semblable à un mouton ╵mené à l’abattoir,
comme un agneau muet ╵devant ceux qui le tondent,
il n’a pas dit un mot.
33 Il a été humilié ╵et n’a pas obtenu justice.
Qui racontera sa descendance ?
Car sa vie sur la terre ╵a été supprimée[f].
34 L’Ethiopien demanda à Philippe : Explique-moi, s’il te plaît : de qui est-il question ? Est-ce de lui-même que le prophète parle, ou de quelqu’un d’autre ?
35 Alors Philippe prit la parole et, partant de ce texte, lui annonça ce qui concerne Jésus.
36 En continuant leur route, ils arrivèrent près d’un point d’eau. Alors, le dignitaire s’écria : Voici de l’eau ; qu’est-ce qui empêche que je sois baptisé ?
[37 – Si tu crois de tout ton cœur, tu peux être baptisé.
– Oui, répondit le dignitaire, je crois que Jésus-Christ est le Fils de Dieu[g].]
38 Aussitôt, il donna l’ordre d’arrêter le char ; Philippe et le dignitaire descendirent tous deux dans l’eau et Philippe le baptisa. 39 Quand ils sortirent de l’eau, l’Esprit du Seigneur enleva Philippe, et le dignitaire ne le vit plus. Celui-ci poursuivit sa route, le cœur rempli de joie.
40 Philippe se retrouva à Ashdod[h], d’où il se rendit à Césarée en annonçant l’Evangile dans toutes les localités qu’il traversait.

D’où le nom de Gaza-la-déserte qui lui est resté même après sa reconstruction. Deux routes menaient à Gaza, l’une longeait la mer, l’autre, beaucoup moins fréquentée, passait par des régions peu habitées. C’est sans doute cette route que Philippe devait prendre.

Ainsi ce haut dignitaire a pu apprendre à connaître leur religion.

8 Saul was standing there while the Jewish leaders killed Stephen. He agreed with what they did.
Saul puts many believers in prison
On the same day that Stephen died, the group of believers who lived in Jerusalem began to have great trouble. People did bad things to them. All the believers left Jerusalem and went to other places in Judea and Samaria. Only Jesus' 12 apostles stayed in Jerusalem.
2 Some good men who loved God buried Stephen's dead body. They were very sad and they cried with loud voices. 3 But Saul brought great trouble to the believers. He wanted to destroy their whole group. So he went to all their houses. He took hold of the believers and he put them into prison. He did that to both men and women.
People in Samaria hear God's good news
4 The believers who had left Jerusalem went to many different towns. In each place, they told the people the message about Jesus. 5 One of them who was called Philip went to a city in Samaria. There he told the people the message about Jesus Christ, God's Messiah.
6 Crowds of people came together to hear Philip speak. They saw him do many miracles which showed that God was with him. So they listened carefully to his message.[a] 7 Many people there had bad spirits, which were living in them. Philip sent the bad spirits out of those people. As the spirits came out, they shouted loudly. Some other people had weak arms or legs, and some people could not walk well. Philip caused many of them to become well again. 8 As a result, the people in that city were very happy.
9 A man called Simon lived in that city. For a long time, he had used magic to do great things. All the people who lived in Samaria were very surprised at what he did. Simon told everyone that he was a very important person. 10 All the people in the city watched Simon carefully. This included the people who were important and all the other people too. Everyone said, ‘This man has great power that comes from God.’ 11 Simon had used his magic for a long time and he had surprised them all very much. Because of that, they listened to him carefully. 12 But then Philip told them the good news about the kingdom of God. He told them the message about God's Messiah, Jesus. Many men and women believed Philip's message, so he baptized them. 13 Simon also believed and Philip baptized him too. After this, Simon stayed near to Philip. He was very surprised at the powerful miracles which Philip did.
14 The apostles who were in Jerusalem heard about all this. They heard that many people in Samaria had believed God's word. So they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When these two apostles arrived in Samaria, they prayed for the people who now believed in Jesus. They asked God to give the new believers the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come to any of these people. When Philip had baptized them, he had just used the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 So Peter and John put their hands on the head of each believer, and they each received the Holy Spirit.
18 Simon saw that God gave the Holy Spirit to people when the apostles put their hands on them. So he said to Peter and John, ‘Here is some money for you. 19 Please give me this same power. I want to put my hands on other people, so that they will receive the Holy Spirit.’
20 Peter answered Simon, ‘I pray that God will destroy you and your money! You think that you can buy this gift with your money! It is very wrong for you to think that. It is God who gives that gift. 21 You cannot do the work which we are doing. God knows that you are not thinking the right things. 22 You must turn away from those very bad thoughts. Turn to the Lord and pray that he will forgive you. Then perhaps he will forgive you for these bad thoughts. 23 You are very upset because you are jealous. I can see that sin rules your life.’
24 Then Simon said to Peter and John, ‘Please, pray to the Lord God for me. Then none of these bad things that you have spoken about will happen to me.’
25 Peter and John told the people about the Lord Jesus and they spoke God's message to them. Then they returned to Jerusalem. On their way, they went through many villages in Samaria and they told the people the good news about Jesus.
Philip meets a man from Ethiopia
26 Then an angel of the Lord God came to Philip. He said, ‘Philip, go south to the road between Jerusalem and Gaza which goes through the wilderness.’[b]
27 So Philip started on his journey. While he was going along this road, he met an important officer from Ethiopia. This man had authority over the queen of Ethiopia's money. The queen was called Candace. The officer was travelling home from Jerusalem. He had been there to worship God.[c]
28 Now the man was travelling home again in his chariot. He was reading something from the book that God's prophet Isaiah wrote. 29 The Holy Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go to that chariot and walk beside it.’
30 So Philip ran to the cart as it went along. The officer was reading aloud from the prophet Isaiah's book and Philip heard him. So Philip asked the man, ‘Do you understand the things that you are reading about?’
31 The man answered, ‘I cannot understand it. I need someone to explain it to me.’ Then he said to Philip, ‘Come up here and sit with me in the cart.’
32 The officer was reading these words from the book of Isaiah:
‘He was like a sheep that people were leading away to kill.
He was like a lamb when they are cutting off its wool,
but it makes no noise.
In the same way, he did not say anything.
33 People did not respect him at all.
They refused to judge him in a fair way.
Nobody can say anything about his descendants,
because his life on earth came to an end.’[d]
34 The officer said to Philip, ‘Please tell me who the prophet Isaiah wrote about. Was he writing about himself or about another person?’ 35 Then Philip explained to the man the words that Isaiah had written. Then he went on to tell him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they were travelling along the road, they came to a place with some water. The man said to Philip, ‘Look! There is some water here. Please will you baptize me? Is there anything to stop you?’
[37 Philip said to him, ‘I can baptize you if you really believe in Jesus.’ The man said to Philip, ‘I do believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’][e]
38 The officer said to the man who was driving the chariot, ‘Stop the chariot!’ Then he went down with Philip into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39 They both came up out of the water again. Immediately the Lord's Holy Spirit took Philip away from that place. The officer did not see Philip again. He continued his journey and he was very happy.
40 Philip saw that he was now in Azotus.[f] From there, he visited many towns and he told people the good news about Jesus. He did this as he went all the way to Caesarea.[g]

- 8:6 The Holy Spirit lived in Philip. He helped Philip to speak in a powerful way. Because of this Philip could do these special things for the people.
- 8:26 It was about 70 kilometres from Jerusalem to the town of Gaza.
- 8:27 Ethiopia is a country in Africa. Candace was a special name for their queen. We think that the man from Ethiopia was a Gentile. But now he worshipped the God of the Jews. The Ethiopian man was riding in a chariot that horses pulled. It was not the kind of chariot that soldiers used when they went to fight.
- 8:33 We can read this in Isaiah 53:7-8. Isaiah wrote this about Jesus hundreds of years earlier.
- 8:37 Most Bibles do not have verse 37.
- 8:40 Azotus was a town 30 kilometres north of Gaza.
- 8:40 Caesarea was an important city in Israel. The Roman ruler sometimes lived there. Caesarea was at the coast and it was an important port. It was 70 kilometres from Jerusalem. We think that Philip lived in Caesarea for many years. Philip was still living in Caesarea when Luke wrote about him again in Acts 21:8.
