2 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor[b]: «Poporul acesta zice că încă n-a venit vremea pentru rezidirea Casei Domnului.»“

3 Apoi Cuvântul Domnului le-a vorbit prin profetul Hagai astfel:

4 „Dar pentru voi a venit oare vremea
    să locuiţi în case căptuşite cu lemn,
        în timp ce Casa aceasta este în ruine?“

5 Acum, aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor:

„Uitaţi-vă cu atenţie la căile voastre!
6 Aţi semănat mult, dar aţi adunat puţin!
    Mâncaţi, dar tot nu vă săturaţi!
Beţi, dar tot nu vă potoliţi setea!
    Vă îmbrăcaţi, dar tot nu vă este cald,
iar plata pe care o câştigaţi
    o puneţi într-o pungă spartă!“

7 Aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor:

„Uitaţi-vă cu atenţie la căile voastre!
8 Duceţi-vă la munte,
    aduceţi lemne
        şi rezidiţi Casa,
ca astfel Eu să-Mi găsesc plăcerea în ea
    şi să fiu onorat, zice Domnul.
9 V-aţi aşteptat la mult, dar iată că aţi adunat puţin,
    iar când aţi adus recolta acasă, am spulberat-o!
De ce? zice Domnul Oştirilor.
    Deoarece Casa Mea zace în ruine,
        în timp ce fiecare dintre voi aleargă pentru casa lui!
10         De aceea cerurile nu v-au mai dat roua,
    iar pământul nu şi-a mai dat recolta!
11     Am chemat seceta peste ţară,
    peste munţi şi peste grâne,
peste must, peste ulei
    şi peste ceea ce rodeşte pământul,
peste oameni, peste animale
    şi peste toată truda mâinilor voastre!“

Răspunsul poporului

12 Atunci Zerub-Babel, fiul lui Şealtiel, Iosua, fiul lui Iehoţadak, marele preot, şi întreaga rămăşiţă a poporului au ascultat de glasul Domnului, Dumnezeul lor, şi de cuvintele profetului Hagai, pentru că Domnul, Dumnezeul lor, îl trimisese. Şi poporul s-a temut de Domnul.

13 Apoi Hagai, mesagerul Domnului, a spus poporului mesajul Domnului: „Eu sunt cu voi!“, zice Domnul. 14 Astfel Domnul a trezit duhul lui Zerub-Babel, fiul lui Şealtiel, guvernatorul lui Iuda, duhul lui Iosua, fiul lui Iehoţadak, marele preot, şi duhul întregii rămăşiţe a poporului. Ei au venit şi au început lucrarea la Casa Domnului Oştirilor, Dumnezeul lor, 15 în a douăzeci şi patra zi a lunii a şasea, în al doilea an[c] al domniei împăratului Darius.

The Command to Rebuild the Temple

1 (A)In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to (B)Zerubbabel the son of (C)Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to (D)Joshua the son of (E)Jehozadak, the high priest: 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the Lord.” 3 Then the word of the Lord came (F)by the hand of Haggai the prophet, 4 (G)“Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while (H)this house lies in ruins? 5 Now, therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: (I)Consider your ways. 6 (J)You have sown much, and harvested little. (K)You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who (L)earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.

7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: (M)Consider your ways. 8 Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that (N)I may take pleasure in it and that (O)I may be glorified, says the Lord. 9 (P)You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, (Q)I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house (R)that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. 10 Therefore (S)the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. 11 And (T)I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on (U)the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and (V)on all their labors.”

The People Obey the Lord

12 (W)Then (X)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and (Y)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all (Z)the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord. 13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord's message, (AA)“I am with you, declares the Lord.” 14 And (AB)the Lord stirred up the spirit of (AC)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of (AD)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all (AE)the remnant of the people. And they came and (AF)worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, 15 (AG)on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

2 “The Lord of Hosts says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt.”(E)

3 The word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet: 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses,(F) while this house[b] lies in ruins?” 5 Now, the Lord of Hosts says this: “Think carefully(G) about[c] your ways:

6 You have planted much
but harvested little.
You eat
but never have enough to be satisfied.
You drink
but never have enough to become drunk.
You put on clothes
but never have enough to get warm.
The wage earner puts his wages
into a bag with a hole in it.”(H)

7 The Lord of Hosts says this: “Think carefully about[d] your ways. 8 Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house. Then I will be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the Lord. 9 “You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined[e] it. Why?” This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. “Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.

10 So on your account,[f]
the skies have withheld the dew
and the land its crops.(I)
11 I have summoned a drought
on the fields and the hills,
on the grain, new wine, olive oil,
and whatever the ground yields,
on man and beast,
and on all that your hands produce.”

The People’s Response

12 Then Zerubbabel(J) son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people(K) obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. So the people feared the Lord.(L)

13 Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, delivered the Lord’s message to the people, “I am with you”(M)—this is the Lord’s declaration.

14 The Lord stirred up the spirit(N) of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of Yahweh of Hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.

It is time to build the temple

1 1-2 The Lord spoke his message to Haggai, his prophet.[a] At that time, Darius was king of Persia.[b] He had been king for 1 year and five months. On the first day of the next month, the Lord told Haggai to speak to Zerubbabel, Judah's ruler, and to Joshua, the leader of God's priests. Zerubbabel was the son of Shealtiel. Joshua was the son of Jehozadak. This was the Almighty Lord's message: ‘Judah's people say that this is not the right time to build a temple for me.’

3 The Lord told his prophet Haggai to say this to the people:

4 ‘You people are living in beautiful houses. But my temple is still just a heap of stones! It is time for you to do something about it! 5 I, the Almighty Lord, tell you this: Think carefully about what is happening to you. 6 You plant seeds but not many plants grow to give you food. You never have enough to eat. You drink, but you are still thirsty. You have clothes to wear, but they do not keep you warm. When you receive money for your work, you soon need to spend it. Then you have no money left.

7 The Almighty Lord also says this: Think about how you live your lives. 8 Now go up to the hills to get wood to build my temple again. If you do that, I will be happy. You will worship me there as you should do. 9 You thought that you would get a lot of food from the crops that grow in your fields. But only a few plants grew. When you brought your food home, it quickly disappeared. I blew it away! Why do you think all this happened? It happened because my temple is still a heap of stones. At the same time, you all work hard to build your own houses. I, the Almighty Lord, am telling you this! 10 That is why there has been no rain on your fields. That is why your plants do not grow well. 11 I have stopped the rain, so that your fields and the hills have become dry. Your crops will not grow. There will be no grapes to make wine. You will not have olives to make oil. Nothing will grow in the ground. Your animals will not become fat. People and animals will all hurt. For all your work, you will get nothing.’

The people obey the Lord

12 Zerubbabel and Joshua, the leader of the priests, as well as all the people obeyed the Lord, their God. They were the people that the Lord had brought back to Jerusalem from Babylon. When they heard the message that Haggai spoke to them, they agreed that it was a message from the Lord. As a result, they respected the Lord and they decided to obey him. 13 Haggai, the Lord's prophet, then spoke this message from the Lord: ‘The Lord says, “I am with you.” ’

14 In that way, the Lord gave strength to Zerubbabel, Joshua and all the people who had returned to live in Jerusalem. They decided to work hard to build the temple of their God, the Almighty Lord. 15 They started to work on the 24th day of that same month, in the second year after Darius had become king.

  1. 1:1-2 When we write Lord like this, it is a special name for God. Sometimes people write it as ‘Yahweh’, or as ‘Jehovah’. It is his own name that he told Moses. See Exodus 3:14. It means ‘I am who I am’. This shows that God has always been there and he always will be there.
  2. 1:1-2 King Darius ruled over the country of Persia and over many other countries. Judah was one of those countries. It was where the Jews lived.

A Call to Build the House of the Lord

1 In the second year of King Darius,(A) on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai(B) to Zerubbabel(C) son of Shealtiel, governor(D) of Judah, and to Joshua(E) son of Jozadak,[a](F) the high priest:(G)

2 This is what the Lord Almighty(H) says: “These people(I) say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.(J)’”

3 Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:(K) 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses,(L) while this house remains a ruin?(M)”

5 Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought(N) to your ways. 6 You have planted much, but harvested little.(O) You eat, but never have enough.(P) You drink, but never have your fill.(Q) You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages,(R) only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

7 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought(S) to your ways. 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber(T) and build my house, so that I may take pleasure(U) in it and be honored,(V)” says the Lord. 9 “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little.(W) What you brought home, I blew(X) away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin,(Y) while each of you is busy with your own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld(Z) their dew(AA) and the earth its crops.(AB) 11 I called for a drought(AC) on the fields and the mountains,(AD) on the grain, the new wine,(AE) the olive oil(AF) and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.(AG)”

12 Then Zerubbabel(AH) son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant(AI) of the people obeyed(AJ) the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared(AK) the Lord.

13 Then Haggai,(AL) the Lord’s messenger,(AM) gave this message of the Lord to the people: “I am with(AN) you,” declares the Lord. 14 So the Lord stirred up(AO) the spirit of Zerubbabel(AP) son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak,(AQ) the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant(AR) of the people.
