Gióp Nghĩ Rằng Ðức Chúa Trời Ðã Ðịnh Sao Thì Ðành Chịu Vậy
9 Bấy giờ Gióp trả lời và nói:
2 Quả thật, biết trên nguyên tắc là như vậy;
Nhưng làm sao loài người có thể được xem là công chính trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời?
3 Nếu con người muốn tranh luận với Ngài,
Thì trong một ngàn lần, con người không thể đáp lại một lần.
4 Tâm trí Ngài quá khôn ngoan, quyền năng Ngài quá vĩ đại;
Ai có thể đối chọi với Ngài mà thắng được chăng?
5 Ngài dời non chuyển núi mà chúng không hay biết gì cả;
Ngài lật đổ chúng khi Ngài nổi trận lôi đình.
6 Ngài lắc rung trái đất thiếu điều nó văng ra khỏi quỹ đạo;
Các nền tảng của nó đều bị lúc lắc lung lay.
7 Ngài ra lịnh, mặt trời thôi trỗi dậy;
Ngài niêm phong các vì sao, chúng không thể hiện ra.
8 Một mình Ngài giương các tầng trời ra;
Chân Ngài giẫm trên ba đào sóng cả.
9 Ngài dựng nên chòm sao Bắc Ðẩu, chòm sao Thiên Lang,
Chòm sao Thất Tinh, và các chòm sao ở phương nam.
10 Ngài làm những việc lớn lao không sao hiểu thấu,
Và những việc diệu kỳ thật vô số vô vàn.
11 Này, Ngài đi ngang qua tôi, nhưng tôi không thể thấy Ngài;
Ngài tiếp tục vượt qua, nhưng tôi không thể cảm nhận Ngài.
12 Này, nếu Ngài muốn cất mạng ai, ai có thể ngăn chận Ngài được?
Ai dám hỏi Ngài, ‘Ngài làm gì vậy?’ hay chăng?
13 Nếu Ðức Chúa Trời không nguôi cơn thịnh nộ,
Thì bè lũ của thủy quái[a] cũng phải nằm rạp dưới chân Ngài.
14 Làm sao tôi có thể đối đáp với Ngài được?
Lý lẽ đâu tôi chọn để có thể tranh luận với Ngài?
15 Dù tôi có đúng đi nữa, tôi vẫn không thể đối nại với Ngài;
Tôi chỉ cầu mong ơn thương xót của Ðấng Ðoán Xét tôi thôi.
16 Nếu tôi kêu cầu và được Ngài đáp lại;
Tôi cũng không dám tin rằng Ngài chịu lắng nghe tôi.
17 Vì Ngài đã đập tôi tan nát bằng một cơn bão tố,
Khiến tôi bị thương tích quá nhiều mà tôi không biết vì sao.
18 Ngài không cho tôi kịp lấy hơi để thở,
Nhưng bắt tôi nuốt đầy bao nỗi đắng cay.
19 Nếu phải đấu sức chăng? Ngài là Ðấng quyền năng vô đối;
Nếu phải đấu lý chăng? Ai dám triệu Ngài ra tòa để xét xử đôi bên?
20 Dù tôi có đúng đi nữa, chính miệng tôi sẽ buộc tôi mắc tội;
Dù tôi không có gì sai, nó sẽ chứng minh rằng tôi quả đã sai lầm.
21 Cho dù tôi vô tội đi nữa, điều đó cũng chẳng có giá trị gì.
Tôi thật chán sống lắm rồi!
22 Người tốt kẻ xấu đều bị đối xử như nhau;
Do đó tôi nói, ‘Ngài diệt người ngay lành chung với phường gian ác!’
23 Nếu tai họa thình lình thoạt đến gây ra chết chóc,
Có lẽ Ngài thản nhiên nhìn kẻ vô tội bị khổ và mỉm cười!
24 Lúc đất nước bị cai trị dưới tay phường gian ác, có lẽ Ngài sẽ che mắt các quan tòa;
Nếu không phải Ngài, thì ai đây?
25 Những ngày của đời con trôi qua lẹ hơn người chạy đưa tin;
Chúng biến mất đi, không phước hạnh gì.
26 Chúng lướt qua nhẹ nhàng như những chiếc thuyền nan;
Như phượng hoàng lao xuống bắt mồi.
27 Nếu con nói, ‘Con phải quên đi nỗi phiền muộn của mình,
Bỏ bộ mặt buồn rầu của con đi, và phải tỏ nét mặt vui tươi.’
28 Con vẫn sợ vì mọi khổ đau con đang gánh chịu;
Vì con biết rằng Ngài chẳng xem con là kẻ vô tội thật đâu.
29 Dù con có làm gì thì con cũng đã bị kể là kẻ gian ác;
Vậy sao con phải vất vả chi nữa cho hoài công vô ích?
30 Dù con có lấy nước của tuyết tan để tắm mình cho sạch;
Hoặc rửa tay con bằng thuốc tẩy thượng hạng đi;
31 Lúc đó Ngài sẽ nhận chìm con vào vũng bùn bẩn thỉu;
Con sẽ bị ô dơ đến độ quần áo của con cũng gớm ghiếc con.
32 Vì Ngài không phải là người phàm như tôi,
Ðể tôi có thể đối nại với Ngài hoặc đưa Ngài ra tòa để cùng nhau chịu xét xử.
33 Không ai có thể làm trọng tài để phân xử giữa chúng tôi,
Ðể có quyền đặt tay quyết định trên cả hai chúng tôi.
34 Ước gì Ngài cất bỏ cây roi của Ngài khỏi tôi,
Ðể tôi không phải sợ hãi vì nỗi kinh hoàng của Ngài nữa.
35 Bấy giờ tôi sẽ nói mà không còn sợ Ngài nữa,
Vì bây giờ tôi không cảm thấy mình được như vậy.

Job Replies: There Is No Arbiter
9 Then Job answered and said:
2 “Truly I know that it is so:
But how can a man be (A)in the right before God?
3 If one wished to (B)contend with him,
one could not answer him once in a thousand times.
4 He is (C)wise in heart and mighty in strength—
who has (D)hardened himself against him, and succeeded?—
5 he who removes mountains, and they know it not,
when he overturns them in his anger,
6 who (E)shakes the earth out of its place,
and (F)its pillars tremble;
7 who commands the sun, and it does not rise;
who seals up the stars;
8 who alone (G)stretched out the heavens
and trampled the waves of the sea;
9 who (H)made (I)the Bear and (J)Orion,
the Pleiades (K)and the chambers of the south;
10 who does (L)great things beyond searching out,
and marvelous things beyond number.
11 Behold, he passes by me, and I (M)see him not;
he moves on, but I do not perceive him.
12 Behold, he snatches away; (N)who can turn him back?
(O)Who will say to him, ‘What are you doing?’
13 “God will not turn back his anger;
beneath him bowed the helpers of (P)Rahab.
14 (Q)How then can I (R)answer him,
choosing my words with him?
15 (S)Though I am in the right, I cannot answer him;
I must (T)appeal for mercy to my accuser.[a]
16 If I summoned him and he answered me,
I would not believe that he was listening to my voice.
17 For he crushes me with a tempest
and multiplies my wounds (U)without cause;
18 he will not let me get my breath,
but fills me with bitterness.
19 If it is a contest of (V)strength, behold, he is mighty!
If it is a matter of justice, who can (W)summon him?[b]
20 Though I am in the right, (X)my own mouth would condemn me;
though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse.
21 I am (Y)blameless; I regard not myself;
I (Z)loathe my life.
22 It is all one; therefore I say,
‘He (AA)destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’
23 When (AB)disaster brings sudden death,
he mocks at the calamity[c] of the innocent.
24 (AC)The earth is given into the hand of the wicked;
he (AD)covers the faces of its judges—
(AE)if it is not he, who then is it?
25 “My (AF)days are swifter than (AG)a runner;
they flee away; they see no good.
26 They go by like (AH)skiffs of reed,
like (AI)an eagle swooping on the prey.
27 If I say, (AJ)‘I will forget my complaint,
I will put off my sad face, and (AK)be of good cheer,’
28 I become (AL)afraid of all my suffering,
for I know you will not (AM)hold me innocent.
29 I shall be (AN)condemned;
why then do I labor in vain?
30 If I wash myself with snow
and (AO)cleanse my hands with lye,
31 yet you will plunge me into a pit,
and my own clothes will (AP)abhor me.
32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I might answer him,
that we should (AQ)come to trial together.
33 (AR)There is no[d] arbiter between us,
who might lay his hand on us both.
34 (AS)Let him take his (AT)rod away from me,
and let (AU)not dread of him terrify me.
35 Then I would speak without fear of him,
for I am not so in myself.

Job Answers Bildad
9 Then Job answered:
2 “·Yes [Truly], I know that this [C Zophar’s point that God punishes the wicked] is ·true [correct],
but how can anyone be ·right [righteous; vindicated] in the presence of God?
3 Someone might want to ·argue with God [take God to court],
but no one could answer God,
not one time out of a thousand.
4 ·God’s wisdom is deep [L He is wise of heart], and his power is great;
no one can ·fight [L press] him ·without getting hurt [and come out whole/unscathed].
5 He moves mountains [C an earthquake] without anyone knowing it
and turns them over when he is angry.
6 He shakes the earth out of its place
and makes its ·foundations [pillars] ·tremble [shudder].
7 He ·commands the sun not to [L speaks to the sun and it does not] shine
and ·shuts off the light of [L seals up] the stars.
8 He alone stretches out the ·skies [heavens]
and ·walks [treads] on the ·waves [L high places] of the sea.
9 It is God who made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades [C well-known constellations]
and the ·groups of stars in the southern sky [L chambers of the south].
10 He does ·wonders [great things] that cannot be understood;
he does so many ·miracles [or marvelous things] they cannot be counted.
11 ·When [or If] he passes me, I cannot see him;
·when [or if] he goes by me, I do not ·recognize [perceive] him.
12 If he snatches ·something [or someone] away, no one can ·stop him [or bring them back]
or say to him, ‘What are you doing?’
13 God will not ·hold back [relent from] his anger.
Even the ·helpers [allies] of the monster Rahab [C a sea monster; Ps. 89:10] ·lie at his feet in fear [L cower under him].
14 So how can I ·argue with [L answer] God,
or even ·find words to argue [L choose words] with him?
15 Even if I were ·right [righteous], I could not answer him;
I could only ·beg God [plead], my Judge, for mercy.
16 If I ·called to [summoned] him and he answered,
I still don’t believe he would ·listen to me [L hear my voice].
17 He would crush me with a ·storm [whirlwind; 38:1]
and multiply my ·wounds [bruises] ·for no reason [without cause].
18 He would not let me ·catch [regain] my breath

·if I were [or I am] innocent, ·my mouth would say I was [or he declares me] guilty.
21 “I am innocent,
but I don’t ·care about myself [or know for sure].
I ·hate [loathe] my own life.
22 It is all the same. That is why I say,
‘God destroys both the innocent and the ·guilty [wicked].’
23 If ·the whip [or disaster] brings sudden death,
God will ·laugh [ridicule] ·at the suffering [or the despair] of the innocent.
24 When the ·land [earth] ·falls [L is given] into the ·hands [power] of evil people,
he covers the judges’ faces so they can’t see it.
If it is not God who does this, then who is it?
25 “My days go by faster than a runner;
they ·fly away without my seeing any joy [L are swift but not good].
26 They ·glide past [pass by] like ·paper [L reed] boats.
They ·attack [or go fast] like eagles swooping down to feed.
27 ·Even though [or If] I say, ‘I will forget my ·complaint [sighs];
I will ·change the look on my face [L abandon my countenance] and ·smile [be cheerful],’
28 I still dread all my ·suffering [distress].
I know you will ·hold me guilty [L not find me innocent].
29 I have already been ·found guilty [declared wicked],
so why should I ·struggle [L exhaust myself] for no reason?
30 [L Even if] I might wash myself with ·soap [or snow]
and ·scrub [cleanse] my hands with ·strong soap [lye],
31 but you would ·push [plunge] me into a dirty pit,
and even my clothes would ·hate [abhor] me.
32 [“L For] God is not human like me, ·so I cannot [L that I could] answer him.
·We cannot meet each other in court [L …that we could go together into judgment].
33 ·I wish there were someone to make peace [L There is no umpire] between us,
·someone to decide our case [L who would set his hand on both of us].
34 Maybe he could remove ·God’s punishment [L his rod from me]
so his terror would no longer frighten me.
35 Then I could speak without being afraid [L of him],
but I am not able to do that.
