33 La parola del Signore fu rivolta una seconda volta a Geremia, mentre egli era ancora chiuso nell'atrio della prigione: 2 «Così dice il Signore, che ha fatto la terra e l'ha formata per renderla stabile e il cui nome è Signore: 3 Invocami e io ti risponderò e ti annunzierò cose grandi e impenetrabili, che tu non conosci. 4 Poiché dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio di Israele, riguardo alle case di questa città e alle case dei re di Giuda, che saranno diroccate di fronte alle opere di assedio e alle armi 5 dei Caldei venuti a far guerra e a riempirle dei cadaveri degli uomini che io ho colpito nella mia ira e nel mio furore, poiché ho nascosto il volto distornandolo da questa città a causa di tutta la loro malvagità: 6 Ecco io farò rimarginare la loro piaga, li curerò e li risanerò; procurerò loro abbondanza di pace e di sicurezza. 7 Cambierò la sorte di Giuda e la sorte di Israele e li ristabilirò come al principio. 8 Li purificherò da tutta l'iniquità con cui hanno peccato contro di me e perdonerò tutte le iniquità che han commesso verso di me e per cui si sono ribellati contro di me. 9 Ciò sarà per me titolo di gioia, di lode e di gloria tra tutti i popoli della terra, quando sapranno tutto il bene che io faccio loro e temeranno e tremeranno per tutto il bene e per tutta la pace che concederò loro. 10 Dice il Signore: In questo luogo, di cui voi dite: Esso è desolato, senza uomini e senza bestiame; nelle città di Giuda e nelle strade di Gerusalemme, che sono desolate, senza uomini, senza abitanti e senza bestiame, si udranno ancora 11 grida di gioia e grida di allegria, la voce dello sposo e quella della sposa e il canto di coloro che dicono: Lodate il Signore degli eserciti, perché è buono, perché la sua grazia dura sempre, portando sacrifici di ringraziamento nel tempio del Signore, perché ristabilirò la sorte di questo paese come era prima, dice il Signore.
12 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: In questo luogo desolato, senza uomini e senza bestiame, e in tutte le sue città ci saranno ancora luoghi di pastori che vi faranno riposare i greggi. 13 Nelle città dei monti, nelle città della Sefèla, nelle città del mezzogiorno, nella terra di Beniamino, nei dintorni di Gerusalemme e nelle città di Giuda passeranno ancora le pecore sotto la mano di chi le conta, dice il Signore.
Le istituzioni dell'avvenire
14 Ecco verranno giorni - oracolo del Signore - nei quali io realizzerò le promesse di bene che ho fatto alla casa di Israele e alla casa di Giuda. 15 In quei giorni e in quel tempo farò germogliare per Davide un germoglio di giustizia; egli eserciterà il giudizio e la giustizia sulla terra. 16 In quei giorni Giuda sarà salvato e Gerusalemme vivrà tranquilla. Così sarà chiamata: Signore-nostra-giustizia.
17 Così dice il Signore: Davide non sarà mai privo di un discendente che sieda sul trono della casa di Israele; 18 ai sacerdoti leviti non mancherà mai chi stia davanti a me per offrire olocausti, per bruciare l'incenso in offerta e compiere sacrifici tutti i giorni».
19 Questa parola del Signore fu poi rivolta a Geremia: 20 «Dice il Signore: Se voi potete spezzare la mia alleanza con il giorno e la mia alleanza con la notte, in modo che non vi siano più giorno e notte al tempo loro, 21 così sarà rotta anche la mia alleanza con Davide mio servo, in modo che non abbia un figlio che regni sul suo trono, e quella con i leviti sacerdoti che mi servono. 22 Come non si può contare la milizia del cielo né numerare la sabbia del mare, così io moltiplicherò la discendenza di Davide, mio servo, e i leviti che mi servono».
23 La parola del Signore fu ancora rivolta a Geremia: 24 «Non hai osservato ciò che questo popolo va dicendo: Il Signore ha rigettato le due famiglie che si era scelte! e così disprezzano il mio popolo quasi che non sia più una nazione ai loro occhi?». 25 Dice il Signore: «Se non sussiste più la mia alleanza con il giorno e con la notte, se io non ho stabilito le leggi del cielo e della terra, 26 in tal caso potrò rigettare la discendenza di Giacobbe e di Davide mio servo, così da non prendere più dai loro posteri coloro che governeranno sulla discendenza di Abramo, di Isacco e di Giacobbe. Poiché io cambierò la loro sorte e avrò pietà di loro».

33 While Jeremiah was still confined(A) in the courtyard(B) of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him a second time:(C) 2 “This is what the Lord says, he who made the earth,(D) the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is his name:(E) 3 ‘Call(F) to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable(G) things you do not know.’ 4 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says about the houses in this city and the royal palaces of Judah that have been torn down to be used against the siege(H) ramps(I) and the sword 5 in the fight with the Babylonians[a]: ‘They will be filled with the dead bodies of the people I will slay in my anger and wrath.(J) I will hide my face(K) from this city because of all its wickedness.
6 “‘Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal(L) my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace(M) and security. 7 I will bring Judah(N) and Israel back from captivity[b](O) and will rebuild(P) them as they were before.(Q) 8 I will cleanse(R) them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive(S) all their sins of rebellion against me. 9 Then this city will bring me renown,(T) joy, praise(U) and honor(V) before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble(W) at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.’
10 “This is what the Lord says: ‘You say about this place, “It is a desolate waste, without people or animals.”(X) Yet in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted,(Y) inhabited by neither people nor animals, there will be heard once more 11 the sounds of joy and gladness,(Z) the voices of bride and bridegroom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings(AA) to the house of the Lord, saying,
For I will restore the fortunes(AD) of the land as they were before,(AE)’ says the Lord.
12 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In this place, desolate(AF) and without people or animals(AG)—in all its towns there will again be pastures for shepherds to rest their flocks.(AH) 13 In the towns of the hill(AI) country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,(AJ) in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem and in the towns of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hand(AK) of the one who counts them,’ says the Lord.
14 “‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise(AL) I made to the people of Israel and Judah.
15 “‘In those days and at that time
I will make a righteous(AM) Branch(AN) sprout from David’s line;(AO)
he will do what is just and right in the land.
16 In those days Judah will be saved(AP)
and Jerusalem will live in safety.(AQ)
This is the name by which it[c] will be called:(AR)
The Lord Our Righteous Savior.’(AS)
17 For this is what the Lord says: ‘David will never fail(AT) to have a man to sit on the throne of Israel, 18 nor will the Levitical(AU) priests(AV) ever fail to have a man to stand before me continually to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and to present sacrifices.(AW)’”
19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 20 “This is what the Lord says: ‘If you can break my covenant with the day(AX) and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time,(AY) 21 then my covenant(AZ) with David my servant—and my covenant with the Levites(BA) who are priests ministering before me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne.(BB) 22 I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless(BC) as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’”
23 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 24 “Have you not noticed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two kingdoms[d](BD) he chose’? So they despise(BE) my people and no longer regard them as a nation.(BF) 25 This is what the Lord says: ‘If I have not made my covenant with day and night(BG) and established the laws(BH) of heaven and earth,(BI) 26 then I will reject(BJ) the descendants of Jacob(BK) and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes[e](BL) and have compassion(BM) on them.’”

33 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
2 Thus saith the Lord the maker thereof, the Lord that formed it, to establish it; the Lord is his name;
3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
4 For thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;
5 They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city.
6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.
7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.
8 And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.
9 And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.
10 Thus saith the Lord; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say shall be desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast,
11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the Lord of hosts: for the Lord is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the Lord.
12 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Again in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, shall be an habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down.
13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them, saith the Lord.
14 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.
15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.
17 For thus saith the Lord; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;
18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
19 And the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, saying,
20 Thus saith the Lord; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
21 Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.
22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.
23 Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying,
24 Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the Lord hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.
25 Thus saith the Lord; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
26 Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

12 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: (Q)‘In this place which is desolate, without man and without beast, and in all its cities, there shall again be a dwelling place of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down. 13 (R)In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, in the cities of the South, in the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, the flocks shall again (S)pass under the hands of him who counts them,’ says the Lord.
14 (T)‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘that (U)I will perform that good thing which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah:
15 ‘In those days and at that time
I will cause to grow up to David
A (V)Branch of righteousness;
He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
16 In those days Judah will be saved,
And Jerusalem will dwell safely.
And this is the name by which she will be called:
[c]THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.’
17 “For thus says the Lord: ‘David shall never (W)lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel; 18 nor shall the (X)priests, the Levites, lack a man to (Y)offer burnt offerings before Me, to [d]kindle grain offerings, and to sacrifice continually.’ ”
The Permanence of God’s Covenant
19 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 20 “Thus says the Lord: ‘If you can break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, so that there will not be day and night in their season, 21 then (Z)My covenant may also be broken with David My servant, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levites, the priests, My ministers. 22 As (AA)the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so will I (AB)multiply the descendants of David My servant and the (AC)Levites who minister to Me.’ ”
23 Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 24 “Have you not considered what these people have spoken, saying, ‘The two families which the Lord has chosen, He has also cast them off’? Thus they have (AD)despised My people, as if they should no more be a nation before them.
