Joseph’s Vow to Jacob

27 So Israel (A)dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions there and (B)grew and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years. 29 When the time (C)drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Now if I have found favor in your sight, please (D)put your hand under my thigh, and (E)deal kindly and truly with me. (F)Please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but (G)let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and (H)bury me in their burial place.”

And he said, “I will do as you have said.”

31 Then he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. So (I)Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.

Jacob Blesses Joseph’s Sons(J)

48 Now it came to pass after these things that Joseph was told, “Indeed your father is sick”; and he took with him his two sons, (K)Manasseh and Ephraim. And Jacob was told, “Look, your son Joseph is coming to you”; and Israel [a]strengthened himself and sat up on the bed. Then Jacob said to Joseph: “God (L)Almighty appeared to me at (M)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said to me, ‘Behold, I will (N)make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people, and (O)give this land to your descendants after you (P)as an everlasting possession.’ And now your (Q)two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine. Your [b]offspring [c]whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. But as for me, when I came from Padan, (R)Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

28 Jacob lived in Egypt(D) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(E) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(F) to die,(G) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(H) put your hand under my thigh(I) and promise that you will show me kindness(J) and faithfulness.(K) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(L) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(M)

“I will do as you say,” he said.

31 “Swear to me,”(N) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(O) and Israel(P) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[a](Q)

Manasseh and Ephraim

48 Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim(R) along with him. When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel(S) rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[b](T) appeared to me at Luz(U) in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me(V) and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers.(W) I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land(X) as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’(Y)

“Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt(Z) before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine,(AA) just as Reuben(AB) and Simeon(AC) are mine. Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. As I was returning from Paddan,[c](AD) to my sorrow(AE) Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).(AF)
