Genesis 47:13-49:27
New American Standard Bible
13 Now there was no [a]food in all the land, because the famine was very severe, so that (A)the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 And (B)Joseph collected all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan in payment for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15 When the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph saying, “Give us [b]food, for (C)why should we die in your presence? For our money is [c]gone.” 16 Then Joseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money is [d]gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them [e]food in exchange for the horses and the [f]flocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he [g]fed them with [h]food in exchange for all their livestock [i]that year. 18 But when that year ended, they came to him the [j]next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord the fact that our money is all spent, and the [k]livestock are my lord’s. There is nothing left [l]for my lord except our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for [m]food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”
Result of the Famine
20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for [n]every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 As for the people, he relocated them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other. 22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy, because the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they [o]lived off the allotment which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their land. 23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, today I have purchased you and your land for Pharaoh; now, here is seed for you, and you may sow the land. 24 [p]At the harvest you shall give a (D)fifth to Pharaoh, and [q]four-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food, and for those of your households and as food for your little ones.” 25 So they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.” 26 Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt, valid to this day, that Pharaoh was to have the fifth; (E)only the land of the priests [r]did not become Pharaoh’s.
27 Now Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in [s]Goshen, and they (F)acquired property in it and (G)were fruitful and became very numerous. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for (H)seventeen years; so the [t]length of Jacob’s life was 147 years.
29 When [u](I)the time for Israel to die drew near, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your sight, (J)place your hand under my thigh now and (K)deal with me in kindness and [v]faithfulness: please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I (L)[w]lie down with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in (M)their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.” 31 And he said, “(N)Swear to me.” So he swore to him. Then (O)Israel bowed in worship at the head of the bed.
Israel’s Last Days
48 Now it came about after these things that [x]Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons (P)Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2 When [y]it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel [z]collected his strength and sat [aa]up in the bed. 3 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “[ab](Q)God Almighty appeared to me at (R)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a multitude of peoples, and will give this land to your [ac]descendants after you as (S)an everlasting possession.’ 5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; (T)Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as (U)Reuben and Simeon are. 6 But your children that you have fathered after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the [ad]names of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 Now as for me, when I came from (V)Paddan, (W)Rachel died, [ae]to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath. I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”
8 When Israel (X)saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9 And Joseph said to his father, “(Y)They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, so that (Z)I may bless them.” 10 Now (AA)the eyes of Israel were so [af]dim from age that he could not see. And [ag]Joseph brought them close to him, and he (AB)kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, “I never [ah]expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your [ai]children as well!” 12 Then Joseph [aj]took them from his knees, and (AC)bowed with his face to the ground. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel reached out his right hand and placed it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, crossing his hands, although (AD)Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 And he blessed Joseph, and said,
“(AE)The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
(AF)The God who has been my shepherd [ak]all my life to this day,
16 (AG)The angel who has redeemed me from all evil,
(AH)Bless the boys;
And may my name [al]live on in them,
And the [am]names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And (AI)may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
17 When Joseph saw that his father (AJ)placed his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and (AK)his [an]descendants shall become [ao]a multitude of nations.” 20 So (AL)he blessed them that day, saying,
“By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying,
‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’”
And so he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but (AM)God will be with you, and (AN)bring you back to the land of your fathers. 22 And I give you one [ap]portion more than your brothers, (AO)which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”
Jacob’s Prophecy concerning His Sons
49 Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves, so that I may tell you what will happen to you (AP)in the [aq]days to come.
2 Gather together and listen, sons of Jacob;
Yes, (AQ)listen to Israel your father.
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and (AR)the beginning of my strength,
Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
4 [ar]Uncontrollable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
(AS)Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch.
5 “(AT)Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Their [as]swords are implements of violence.
6 (AU)May my soul not enter into their council;
May my glory not be united with their assembly;
For in their anger they killed [at]men,
And in their self-will they lamed [au]oxen.
7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel.
(AV)I will scatter them in Jacob,
And disperse them among Israel.
8 “As for you, Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
(AW)Your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
9 Judah is a (AX)lion’s cub;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(AY)He [av]crouches, he lies down as a lion,
And as a [aw]lion, who [ax]dares to stir him up?
10 (AZ)The scepter will not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
[ay]Until Shiloh comes,
And (BA)to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11 (BB)He ties his foal to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine;
(BC)He washes his garments in wine,
And his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes are [az]dull from wine,
And his teeth [ba]white from milk.
13 “(BD)Zebulun will reside at the seashore;
And he shall be [bb]a harbor for ships,
And his flank shall be toward Sidon.
14 “Issachar is a [bc]strong donkey,
(BE)Lying down between the sheepfolds.
15 When he saw that a resting place was good
And that the land was pleasant,
He bowed his shoulder to carry burdens,
And became a slave at forced labor.
16 “(BF)Dan shall (BG)judge his people,
As one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan shall be a serpent in the way,
A horned viper in the path,
That bites the horse’s heels,
So that its rider falls backward.
18 (BH)For Your salvation I wait, Lord.
21 “(BL)Naphtali is a doe let loose;
He utters beautiful words.
22 “(BM)Joseph is a fruitful [bh]branch,
A fruitful [bi]branch by a spring;
Its [bj]branches hang over a wall.
23 The archers provoked him,
And shot at him and were hostile toward him;
24 But his (BN)bow remained [bk]firm,
And [bl](BO)his arms were agile,
From the hands of the (BP)Mighty One of Jacob
(From there is (BQ)the Shepherd, (BR)the Stone of Israel),
25 From (BS)the God of your father who helps you,
And [bm](BT)by the [bn]Almighty who blesses you
With (BU)blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father
Have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors
Up to the [bo]furthest boundary of (BV)the everlasting hills;
May they be on the head of Joseph,
And on the top of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.
27 “Benjamin is a [bp]ravenous wolf;
In the morning he devours the prey,
And in the evening he divides the spoils.”
