Joseph Is Sold to Potiphar
39 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar was an officer to ·the king of Egypt [L Pharaoh] and the chief butcher [37:36]. He bought Joseph from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. 2 The Lord was with Joseph [C indicating a covenant relationship], and he ·became a successful man [prospered]. He lived in the house of his master, Potiphar the Egyptian.
3 Potiphar saw that the Lord was with Joseph and that the Lord made Joseph ·successful [prosperous] in everything he did. 4 So ·Potiphar was very happy with Joseph [L Joseph found grace/favor in his eyes] and allowed him to ·be his personal servant [attend him]. He put Joseph in charge of the house, trusting him with everything he owned. 5 When Joseph was put in charge of the house and everything Potiphar owned, the Lord blessed the ·people in Potiphar’s [L the Egyptian’s] house because of Joseph. And the Lord blessed everything that belonged to Potiphar, both in the house and in the field. 6 So Potiphar left Joseph in charge of everything he owned and was not concerned about anything except the food he ate.
Joseph Is Put into Prison
Now Joseph was ·well built [L pleasing in figure/form] and ·handsome [L pleasing in appearance]. 7 After ·some time [L these things] the wife of Joseph’s master ·began to desire [cast her eyes on; L lifted her eyes to] Joseph, and one day she said to him, “·Have sexual relations [L Lie] with me.”
8 But Joseph refused and said to ·her [L his master’s wife], “My master ·trusts me with [L has no concern with me about] everything in his house. He has put me in charge of everything he owns. 9 There is no one in his house greater than I. He has not kept anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How can I do such an evil thing? It is a sin against God [Ex. 20:14; Prov. 5–7].”
10 The woman talked to Joseph every day, but he ·refused [L did not listen to/obey her] to ·have sexual relations with [L lie beside] her or even spend time with her.
11 One day Joseph went into the house to do his work as usual and was the only man in the house at that time. 12 His master’s wife grabbed his coat and said to him, “Come and ·have sexual relations [L lie] with me.” But Joseph left his coat in her hand and ran ·out of the house [L outside].
13 When she saw that Joseph had left his coat in her hands and had run outside, 14 she called to the ·servants in [L the men of] her house and said, “Look! This Hebrew slave was brought here to ·shame [insult; sport with] us. He came in and tried to ·have sexual relations [L lie] with me, but I screamed. 15 ·My scream scared him and [L When he heard me raise my voice and call out] he ran away, but he left his coat with me.” 16 She kept his coat until her ·husband [master] came home, 17 and she told him the same story. She said, “This Hebrew slave you brought here came in to ·shame [insult; make sport of] me! 18 When he came near me, I ·screamed [L raised my voice]. He ·ran away [fled], but he left his coat.”
19 When Joseph’s master heard what his wife said Joseph had done, he became very angry. 20 So Potiphar arrested Joseph and put him into the ·prison [L round house] where the king’s prisoners were ·put [L confined]. And Joseph stayed there in the ·prison [L round house].
21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him ·kindness [loyalty; love] and ·caused the prison warden to like Joseph [L gave him favor in the eyes of the chief jailer]. 22 The ·prison warden [chief jailer] chose Joseph to take care of all the prisoners, and he was responsible for whatever was done in the prison [39:20]. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph’s care because the Lord was with Joseph and made him ·successful [prosper] in everything he did.

39 Cuando José fue llevado a Egipto, un egipcio llamado Potifar lo compró a los ismaelitas que lo habían llevado allá. Potifar era funcionario del faraón y capitán de su guardia. 2 Pero el Señor estaba con José, y le fue muy bien mientras vivía en la casa de su amo egipcio. 3 Su amo se dio cuenta de que el Señor estaba con José, y que por eso a José le iba bien en todo. 4 Esto hizo que José se ganara la simpatía de su amo, que lo nombró su ayudante personal y mayordomo de su casa, y dejó a su cargo todo lo que tenía. 5 Desde el día en que Potifar dejó a José a cargo de su casa y de todo lo suyo, el Señor bendijo a Potifar, tanto en su casa como en el campo. 6 Con José al cuidado de todo lo que tenía, Potifar ya no se preocupaba mas que de comer.
José era muy bien parecido y causaba buena impresión, 7 así que después de algún tiempo la esposa de su amo se fijó en él, y un día le dijo:
—Acuéstate conmigo.
8 Pero José no quiso, y le contestó:
—Mire usted, mi amo ha dejado a mi cargo todo lo que tiene, y estando yo aquí, no tiene de qué preocuparse. 9 En esta casa nadie es más que yo; mi amo no me ha negado nada, sino sólo a usted, pues es su esposa; así que, ¿cómo podría yo hacer algo tan malo, y pecar contra Dios?
10 Y aunque ella insistía con José todos los días para que se acostara con ella y estuviera a su lado, él no le hacía caso. 11 Pero un día José entró en la casa para hacer su trabajo y, como no había nadie allí, 12 ella lo agarró de la ropa y le dijo:
—Acuéstate conmigo.
Pero él salió corriendo y dejó su ropa en las manos de ella. 13 Cuando ella vio que al salir le había dejado la ropa en sus manos, 14 llamó a los siervos de la casa y les dijo:
—Miren, mi esposo nos trajo un hebreo que ahora se burla de nosotros. Entró a verme y quería acostarse conmigo, pero yo grité muy fuerte; 15 y cuando me oyó gritar con todas mis fuerzas, salió corriendo y hasta dejó aquí su ropa.
16 Luego, ella guardó la ropa de José hasta que su amo llegó a la casa. 17 Entonces le contó lo mismo, y dijo:
—El esclavo hebreo que nos trajiste entró en mi cuarto y quiso deshonrarme, 18 pero cuando grité con todas mis fuerzas, salió corriendo y dejó su ropa aquí. 19 Así me trató tu esclavo.
El amo de José se enojó mucho al oír lo que su esposa le estaba contando, 20 así que agarró a José y ordenó que lo metieran en la cárcel, donde estaban los presos del rey. Pero aun en la cárcel 21 el Señor siguió estando con José y mostrándole su bondad, pues hizo que se ganara la simpatía del jefe de la cárcel, 22 el cual dejó todos los presos a su cargo. José era el que daba las órdenes para todo lo que allí se hacía, 23 y el jefe de la cárcel no tenía que revisar nada de lo que estaba a cargo de José, porque el Señor estaba con él y hacía que todo le saliera bien.

Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife
39 Now Joseph(A) had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard,(B) bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.(C)
2 The Lord was with Joseph(D) so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him(E) and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,(F) 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes(G) and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household,(H) and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.(I) 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household(J) of the Egyptian because of Joseph.(K) The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.(L) 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care;(M) with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,(N) 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”(O)
8 But he refused.(P) “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.(Q) 9 No one is greater in this house than I am.(R) My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”(S) 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused(T) to go to bed with her or even be with her.
11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,(U) and none of the household servants(V) was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak(W) and said, “Come to bed with me!”(X) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.(Y)
13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants.(Z) “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew(AA) has been brought to us to make sport of us!(AB) He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.(AC) 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”(AD)
16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story:(AE) “That Hebrew(AF) slave(AG) you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger.(AH) 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison,(AI) the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.
But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him;(AJ) he showed him kindness(AK) and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.(AL) 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.(AM) 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s(AN) care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.(AO)
