20 Joseph’s master took him and threw him into the prison,[a] the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. So he was there in the prison.[b]

- Genesis 39:20 tn Heb “the house of roundness,” suggesting that the prison might have been a fortress or citadel.
- Genesis 39:20 sn The story of Joseph is filled with cycles and repetition: He has two dreams (chap. 37), he interprets two dreams in prison (chap. 40) and the two dreams of Pharaoh (chap. 41), his brothers make two trips to see him (chaps. 42-43), and here, for the second time (see 37:24), he is imprisoned for no good reason, with only his coat being used as evidence. Genesis 42:16-19
New English Translation
16 One of you must go and get[a] your brother, while[b] the rest of you remain in prison.[c] In this way your words may be tested to see if[d] you are telling the truth.[e] If not, then, as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!” 17 He imprisoned[f] them all for three days. 18 On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do as I say[g] and you will live,[h] for I fear God.[i] 19 If you are honest men, leave one of your brothers confined here in prison[j] while the rest of you go[k] and take grain back for your hungry families.[l]

- Genesis 42:16 tn Heb “send from you one and let him take.” After the imperative, the prefixed verbal form with prefixed vav (ו) indicates purpose.
- Genesis 42:16 tn The disjunctive clause is here circumstantial-temporal.
- Genesis 42:16 tn Heb “bound.”
- Genesis 42:16 tn The words “to see” have been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
- Genesis 42:16 tn Heb “the truth [is] with you.”
- Genesis 42:17 sn The same Hebrew word is used for Joseph’s imprisonment in 40:3, 4, 7. There is some mirroring going on in the narrative. The Hebrew word used here (אָסַף, ʾasaf, “to gather”) is not normally used in a context like this (for placing someone in prison), but it forms a wordplay on the name Joseph (יוֹסֵף, yosef) and keeps the comparison working.
- Genesis 42:18 tn Heb “Do this.”
- Genesis 42:18 tn After the preceding imperative, the imperative with vav (ו) can, as here, indicate logical sequence.
- Genesis 42:18 sn For I fear God. Joseph brings God into the picture to awaken his brothers’ consciences. The godly person cares about the welfare of people, whether they live or die. So he will send grain back, but keep one of them in Egypt. This action contrasts with their crime of selling their brother into slavery.
- Genesis 42:19 tn Heb “bound in the house of your prison.”
- Genesis 42:19 tn The disjunctive clause is circumstantial-temporal.
- Genesis 42:19 tn Heb “[for] the hunger of your households.”
Leviticus 24:12
New English Translation
12 So they placed him in custody until they were able[a] to make a clear legal decision for themselves based on words from the mouth of the Lord.[b]

- Leviticus 24:12 tn The words “until they were able” are not in the Hebrew text, but are implied.
- Leviticus 24:12 tn The Hebrew here is awkward. A literal reading would be something like the following: “And they placed him in custody to give a clear decision [HALOT 976 s.v. פרשׁ qal] for themselves on the mouth of the Lord.” In any case, they were apparently waiting for a direct word from the Lord regarding this matter (see vv. 13ff).
Numbers 15:34
New English Translation
34 They put him in custody, because there was no clear instruction about what should be done to him.
