Genesis 38:13-30
Legacy Standard Bible
13 Then it was told to Tamar, “[a]Behold, your father-in-law is going up to (A)Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14 So she removed her widow’s garments from herself and (B)covered herself with a [b]veil and wrapped herself. And she sat at the entrance of [c]Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah had grown up, and (C)she had not been given to him as a wife. 15 Then Judah saw her, and he thought she was a harlot, for she had covered her face. 16 So he turned aside to her by the road and said, “Here now, let me come in to you”; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?” 17 He said, therefore, “I will send you a [d]young goat from the flock.” She said, moreover, “Will you give a pledge until you send it?” 18 Then he said, “What pledge shall I give you?” And she said, “(D)Your signet and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him. 19 Then she arose and went. And she removed her [e]veil from herself and put on her widow’s garments.
20 Then Judah sent the [f]young goat by his friend the Adullamite to take the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her. 21 So he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the cult prostitute who was by the road at Enaim?” But they said, “There has been no cult prostitute here.” 22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I did not find her; and furthermore, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no cult prostitute here.’” 23 Then Judah said, “Let her [g]keep them, lest we become a laughingstock. Behold, I sent this young goat, but you did not find her.”
24 Now it happened about three months later that it was told to Judah saying, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the harlot, and behold, she is also with child by harlotry.” Then Judah said, “Bring her out and (E)let her be burned!” 25 It was while she was being brought out that she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man to whom these things belong.” And she said, “(F)Please recognize this and see, whose signet ring and cords and staff are these?” 26 And Judah recognized them and said, “(G)She is more righteous than I, inasmuch as (H)I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not [h]know her again.
27 Now it happened at the time she was giving birth, that behold, there were (I)twins in her womb. 28 And it happened, while she was giving birth, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.” 29 And then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out. So she said, “What a breach you have made for yourself!” So he was named [i](J)Perez. 30 Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand; and he was named [j](K)Zerah.

Genesis 38:13-30
New International Version
13 When Tamar(A) was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,”(B) 14 she took off her widow’s clothes,(C) covered herself with a veil(D) to disguise herself, and then sat down(E) at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah.(F) For she saw that, though Shelah(G) had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute,(H) for she had covered her face. 16 Not realizing(I) that she was his daughter-in-law,(J) he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”(K)
“And what will you give me to sleep with you?”(L) she asked.
17 “I’ll send you a young goat(M) from my flock,” he said.
“Will you give me something as a pledge(N) until you send it?” she asked.
18 He said, “What pledge should I give you?”
“Your seal(O) and its cord, and the staff(P) in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.(Q) 19 After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes(R) again.
20 Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite(S) in order to get his pledge(T) back from the woman, but he did not find her. 21 He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute(U) who was beside the road at Enaim?”
“There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.
22 So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’”
23 Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has,(V) or we will become a laughingstock.(W) After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.”
24 About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”
Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”(X)
25 As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”(Y)
26 Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I,(Z) since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.(AA)” And he did not sleep with her again.
27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.(AB) 28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife(AC) took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist(AD) and said, “This one came out first.” 29 But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out,(AE) and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.[a](AF) 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist,(AG) came out. And he was named Zerah.[b](AH)
