Jakob aanbidt God bij Betel
35 Daarna zei God tegen Jakob: ‘Breek uw kamp op, ga naar Betel en vestig u daar. Bouw daar een altaar ter ere van de God, die aan u verscheen toen u op de vlucht was voor uw broer Esau.’ 2 Jakob beval ieder lid van zijn huishouding de afgodsbeeldjes die zij hadden meegebracht, weg te doen. Iedereen moest zich wassen en schone kleren aantrekken. 3 ‘Want we gaan naar Betel,’ legde hij uit. ‘Ik zal daar een altaar bouwen voor de God die mijn gebeden verhoorde in moeilijke tijden en die bij mij is geweest tijdens deze reis.’ 4 Allen gaven Jakob hun afgodsbeeldjes en oorringen en hij begroef ze onder de eik bij Sichem.
5 Daarna trokken zij verder. De vrees voor God lag over alle steden die zij passeerden, zodat niemand hen durfde te achtervolgen. 6 Ten slotte kwamen zij bij Luz (ook Betel genoemd) in Kanaän. 7 Jakob bouwde daar een altaar en noemde het El-Betel (de God die bij Betel aan mij is verschenen), want dat was de plaats waar God aan hem verscheen, toen hij op de vlucht was voor Esau. 8 Kort hierna stierf Debora, de oude voedster van Rebekka. Zij werd onder de eik in het dal beneden Betel begraven. Die eik heette voortaan Eik van het verdriet. 9 Toen Jakob in Betel aankwam, op zijn reis vanuit Paddan-Aram, verscheen God opnieuw en zegende hem.
10 En God zei: ‘U zult niet langer Jakob (Bedrieger) worden genoemd, maar Israël (Hij die overwint met God). 11 Ik ben God, de Almachtige, Ik zal u vruchtbaar maken en u tot een groot volk, ja, tot vele volken maken. Er zullen veel koningen onder uw nakomelingen zijn. 12 Ik zal u het land geven dat Ik ook aan Abraham en Isaak heb gegeven. Ja, Ik zal het aan u en uw nakomelingen geven.’ 13 Na die woorden zette Jakob op de plaats waar God aan hem was verschenen, een gedenksteen neer 14 en goot er wijn overheen als een offer aan God. Daarna goot hij er olijfolie overheen. 15 Jakob noemde die plaats Betel (Huis van God), omdat God daar met hem had gesproken.
16 Na het vertrek uit Betel reisden Jakob en zijn huishouding naar Efrat (Bethlehem). Maar onderweg kreeg Rachel weeën, het begin van een moeilijke bevalling. 17 Na de pijnlijke geboorte riep de vroedvrouw uit: ‘Wees niet bang, u hebt weer een zoon!’ 18 En met haar laatste woorden (want zij stierf) noemde Rachel het kind Ben-Oni (Zoon van mijn pijn), maar zijn vader noemde hem Benjamin (Zoon van mijn Rechterhand). 19 Zo stierf Rachel en zij begroeven haar langs de weg naar Efrat (Bethlehem). 20 Jakob zette een stenen monument op haar graf, dat daar tot op heden staat.
21 Israël zette de reis voort en sloeg zijn kamp op bij de Toren van Eder. 22 Daar sliep Ruben met Bilha, zijn vaders bijvrouw, en iemand vertelde dat aan Israël. 23 Dit zijn de namen van de twaalf zonen van Jakob: de zonen van Lea: Ruben, Jakobs oudste kind, Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar en Zebulon. 24 De zonen van Rachel: Jozef en Benjamin. 25 De zonen van Bilha, Rachels dienares: Dan en Naftali. 26 De zonen van Zilpa, Leaʼs dienares: Gad en Aser. Al deze zonen kreeg Jakob in Paddan-Aram. 27 Zo kwam Jakob dan eindelijk aan bij zijn vader Isaak te Mamre in Kirjat-Arba (tegenwoordig Hebron), waar ook Abraham had gewoond.
28 Korte tijd later stierf Isaak. Hij was honderdtachtig jaar oud. 29 Zijn zonen Esau en Jakob begroeven hem.

Jacob Moves to Bethel
35 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and live there, and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you [in a distinct manifestation] when you fled [years ago] from Esau your brother.”(A) 2 Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the [idols and images of] foreign gods that are among you, and ceremonially purify yourselves and change [into fresh] clothes; 3 then let us get up and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave Jacob all the [idols and images of the] foreign gods they had and the rings which were in their ears [worn as charms against evil], and Jacob buried them under the [a]oak tree near Shechem.
5 As they journeyed, there was a great [supernatural] terror [sent from God] on the cities around them, and [for that reason] the Canaanites did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. 7 There he built an altar [to worship the Lord], and called the place El-bethel (God of the House of God), because there God had revealed Himself to him when he escaped from his brother. 8 Now Deborah, [who once was] Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried below Bethel under the oak; and the name of it was called Allon-bacuth (Oak of Weeping).
Jacob Is Named Israel
9 Then God [in a visible manifestation] appeared to Jacob again when he came out of Paddan-aram, and declared a blessing on him.(B) 10 Again God said to him,
“Your name is Jacob;
You shall no longer be called Jacob,
But Israel shall be your name.”
So he was called [b]Israel. 11 And God said to him,
“I am [c]God Almighty.
Be fruitful and multiply;
A nation and a company of nations shall come from you,
And kings shall be born of your [d]loins.

“The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac
I will give to you,
and to your descendants after you I will give the land.”
13 Then God ascended from Jacob in the place where He had spoken with him. 14 Jacob set up a pillar (memorial, monument) in the place where he had talked with God, a pillar of stone, and he poured a drink offering [of wine] on it; he also poured oil on it [to declare it sacred for God’s purpose]. 15 So Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, Bethel (the House of God).
16 Then they journeyed from Bethel; and when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath (Bethlehem), Rachel began to give birth and had difficulty and suffered severely. 17 When she was in hard labor the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid; you now have another son.” 18 And as her soul was departing, (for she died), she named him Ben-oni (son of my sorrow); but his father called him Benjamin ([e]son of the right hand). 19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 Jacob set a pillar (memorial, monument) on her grave; that is the [f]pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. 21 Then Israel (Jacob) journeyed on and pitched his tent on the other side of the tower of Eder [the lookout point used by shepherds].
22 While Israel was living in that land, Reuben [his eldest son] went and lay with Bilhah his father’s [g]concubine, and Israel heard about it.
The Sons of Israel
Now Jacob had twelve sons— 23 The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; 24 and the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin; 25 and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid: Dan and Naphtali; 26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob born to him in Paddan-aram.
27 Jacob came to Isaac his father at Mamre of Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had lived temporarily.
28 Now the days of Isaac were a hundred and eighty years. 29 Isaac’s spirit departed and he died and was [h]gathered to his people [who had preceded him in death], an old man full of days (satisfied, fulfilled); his sons Esau and Jacob buried him [in the cave of Machpelah with his parents Abraham and Sarah].

Jacob in Bethel
35 God said to Jacob, “Go to the city of Bethel and live there. Make an altar to the God who appeared to you there. This was when you were running away from your brother Esau.”
2 So Jacob said to his family and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods you have. Make yourselves clean, and change your clothes. 3 We will leave here and go to Bethel. There I will build an altar to God. He has helped me during my time of trouble. He has been with me everywhere I have gone.” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had. And they gave him the earrings they were wearing. He hid them under the great tree near the town of Shechem. 5 Then Jacob and his sons left there. But God caused the people in the nearby cities to be afraid. So they did not follow the sons of Jacob. 6 And Jacob and all the people who were with him went to Luz. It is now called Bethel. It is in the land of Canaan. 7 There Jacob built an altar. He named the place Bethel, after God, because God had appeared to him there. That was when he was running from his brother.
8 Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak tree at Bethel. They named that place Oak of Crying.
Jacob’s New Name
9 When Jacob came back from Northwest Mesopotamia, God appeared to him again. And God blessed him. 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. But you will not be called Jacob any longer. Your new name will be Israel.” So he called him Israel. 11 God said to him, “I am God All-Powerful. Have many children and grow in number as a nation. You will be the ancestor of many nations and kings. 12 I gave Abraham and Isaac land. I will give that same land to you and your descendants.” 13 Then God left him. 14 Jacob set up a stone on edge in that place where God had talked to him. And he poured a drink offering and olive oil on it to make it special for God. 15 And Jacob named the place Bethel.
Rachel Dies Giving Birth
16 Jacob and his group left Bethel. Before they came to Ephrath, Rachel began giving birth to her baby. 17 But she was having much trouble with this birth. When Rachel’s nurse saw this, she said, “Don’t be afraid, Rachel. You are giving birth to another son.” 18 Rachel gave birth to the son, but she died. As she lay dying, she named the boy Son of My Suffering. But Jacob called him Benjamin.[a]
19 Rachel was buried on the road to Ephrath, a district of Bethlehem. 20 And Jacob set up a rock on her grave to honor her. That rock is still there today. 21 Then Israel, also called Jacob, continued his journey. He camped just south of Migdal Eder.
22 While Israel was in that land Reuben had physical relations with Israel’s slave woman Bilhah. And Israel heard about it.
The Family of Israel
Jacob had 12 sons. 23 He had 6 sons by his wife Leah. Reuben was his first son. Then Leah had Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.
24 He had 2 sons by his wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
25 He had 2 sons by Rachel’s slave girl Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali.
26 And he had 2 sons by Leah’s slave girl Zilpah: Gad and Asher.
These are Jacob’s sons who were born in Northwest Mesopotamia.
27 Jacob went to his father Isaac at Mamre near Hebron. This is where Abraham and Isaac had lived. 28 Isaac lived 180 years. 29 So Isaac breathed his last breath and died when he was very old. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
