Jakob en Esau sluiten vrede
33 Toen zag Jakob in de verte Esau met vierhonderd man aankomen. 2 Hij zette zijn gezin in een rij met zijn twee bijvrouwen en hun kinderen voorop, daarachter Lea met haar kinderen en helemaal achteraan Rachel met Jozef. 3 Jakob liep naar voren tot hij bij zijn broer kwam en boog zeven keer diep voor hem. 4 Maar Esau rende op hem af en omarmde hem! Ze kusten elkaar en huilden. 5 Esau wees op de vrouwen en kinderen en vroeg: ‘Wie zijn dat, die je daar bij je hebt?’ ‘Dat zijn de kinderen die God mij geschonken heeft,’ antwoordde Jakob. 6 Zijn bijvrouwen en hun kinderen kwamen naar voren en bogen diep voor Esau. 7 Daarna deden Lea en haar kinderen hetzelfde, evenals Rachel en Jozef. 8 ‘En wat waren dat voor dieren die ik tegenkwam?’ vroeg Esau. Jakob antwoordde: ‘Dat waren geschenken voor jou om je gunstig te stemmen!’ 9 ‘Broer, ik heb al genoeg,’ lachte Esau, ‘hou jij je dieren maar.’ 10 ‘Nee, ik wil graag dat je die geschenken aanneemt,’ zei Jakob. ‘Het is een hele opluchting voor mij dat je ons zo vriendelijk tegemoet komt. Dat ik jou in deze stemming mag ontmoeten, betekent voor mij evenveel als de vertroostende blik van God. 11 Neem mijn geschenken alsjeblieft aan, want God is erg goed voor mij geweest. Ik heb toch alles,’ was Jakobs antwoord. Daarop nam Esau dan toch de geschenken maar aan. 12 ‘Nou, laten we dan maar gaan,’ zei Esau. ‘Mijn mannen en ik zullen bij jullie blijven en jullie begeleiden.’ 13 Maar Jakob wierp tegen: ‘Zoals je ziet, zijn sommige kinderen nog erg klein en het vee heeft ook jongen. Als die te snel worden gedreven, zullen ze doodgaan. 14 Ga jij maar vast vooruit, wij volgen wel in ons eigen tempo en dan ontmoeten we elkaar in Seïr.’ 15 ‘Goed,’ zei Esau, ‘maar dan zal ik een aantal mannen bij je laten om je te helpen en de weg te wijzen.’ ‘Nee,’ hield Jakob vol, ‘wij komen er wel. Doe alsjeblieft wat ik heb voorgesteld.’ 16 En Esau ging diezelfde dag nog terug naar Seïr.
17 Jakob en zijn metgezellen reisden door tot Sukkot, sloegen daar hun kamp op en bouwden hutten voor de kudde. Daarom heet die plaats Sukkot (Hutten). 18 Daarna kwamen zij veilig aan in Sichem, in Kanaän en sloegen hun kamp op buiten de stad. 19 Jakob kocht het stuk land waarop hij zijn tent had opgezet, voor honderd zilverstukken van de familie van Chamor, de vader van Sichem. 20 Hij bouwde daar een altaar en noemde het: ‘De God van Israël is God.’

33 Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. He divided the children between Leah, Rachel, and the two servants. 2 He put the servants and their children in front, Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear. 3 He himself passed over in front of them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept. 5 He lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, “Who are these with you?”
He said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” 6 Then the servants came near with their children, and they bowed themselves. 7 Leah also and her children came near, and bowed themselves. After them, Joseph came near with Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
8 Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company which I met?”
Jacob said, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.”
9 Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; let that which you have be yours.”
10 Jacob said, “Please, no, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present at my hand, because I have seen your face, as one sees the face of God, and you were pleased with me. 11 Please take the gift that I brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” He urged him, and he took it.
12 Esau said, “Let’s take our journey, and let’s go, and I will go before you.”
13 Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young, and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die. 14 Please let my lord pass over before his servant, and I will lead on gently, according to the pace of the livestock that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir.”
15 Esau said, “Let me now leave with you some of the people who are with me.”
He said, “Why? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”
16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 Jacob traveled to Succoth, built himself a house, and made shelters for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.[a]
18 Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan Aram; and encamped before the city. 19 He bought the parcel of ground where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money. 20 He erected an altar there, and called it El Elohe Israel.[b]

33 雅各遠遠看見以掃帶著四百人迎面而來，便把孩子們分別交給利亞、拉結和兩個婢女， 2 又吩咐兩個婢女和她們的孩子走在前面，利亞和她的孩子跟在後面，拉結和約瑟走在最後。 3 他自己則走在他們前面，接連俯伏下拜七次，直到他哥哥跟前。
4 以掃見到雅各，就跑上去擁抱他，親吻他，二人抱頭痛哭。 5 以掃看見跟在雅各後面的婦女和孩子，就問：「這些和你同行的是誰？」雅各說：「這些孩子是上帝施恩賜給你僕人的。」 6 雅各的兩個婢女和她們的孩子上前下拜， 7 利亞也和她的孩子上前下拜，最後約瑟和拉結也上前向以掃下拜。
8 以掃說：「我在路上遇見的那一群群牲畜是怎麼回事？」雅各回答說：「我帶來這些是要得到我主的恩待。」 9 以掃說：「弟弟，我已經有很多了，你自己留著吧！」 10 雅各說：「不，你若賞臉，就請收下！我見了你的面就像見了上帝的面，因為你這樣善侍我。 11 請你收下我的禮物吧，因為上帝恩待了我，使我富足。」雅各再三懇求，以掃才收下。
12 以掃說：「我們走吧！我陪你們走。」 13 雅各卻說：「我主知道孩子們還小，而且，我還要照料正在哺乳的牛羊，如果整天趕路，牛羊會累死。 14 倒不如請我主先走，我遷就牲畜和孩子慢慢走，我在西珥與我主會合。」
15 以掃說：「讓我給你留幾個幫手吧。」雅各說：「不用了，能得到我主的恩待就夠了。」 16 於是，以掃在當天先回西珥去了， 17 雅各卻去了疏割，在那裡為自己建造房屋，為牲畜搭起棚子。因此那地方叫疏割[a]。
18 這樣，雅各從巴旦·亞蘭平安地回到迦南的示劍城，在城外搭營居住。 19 他搭營居住的這塊地是他用一百塊銀子向示劍的父親哈抹的子孫買的。 20 雅各在那裡築了一座壇，稱之為伊利·伊羅伊·以色列[b]。
