New English Translation
30 When Rachel saw that she could not give Jacob children, she[a] became jealous of her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children[b] or I’ll die!” 2 Jacob became furious[c] with Rachel and exclaimed, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?”[d] 3 She replied, “Here is my servant Bilhah! Sleep with[e] her so that she can bear[f] children[g] for me[h] and I can have a family through her.”[i]
4 So Rachel[j] gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob slept with[k] her. 5 Bilhah became pregnant[l] and gave Jacob a son.[m] 6 Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me. He has responded to my prayer[n] and given me a son.” That is why[o] she named him Dan.[p]
7 Bilhah, Rachel’s servant, became pregnant again and gave Jacob another son.[q] 8 Then Rachel said, “I have fought a desperate struggle with my sister, but I have won.”[r] So she named him Naphtali.[s]
9 When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave[t] her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife. 10 Soon Leah’s servant Zilpah gave Jacob a son.[u] 11 Leah said, “How fortunate!”[v] So she named him Gad.[w]
12 Then Leah’s servant Zilpah gave Jacob another son.[x] 13 Leah said, “How happy I am,[y] for women[z] will call me happy!” So she named him Asher.[aa]
14 At the time[ab] of the wheat harvest Reuben went out and found some mandrake plants[ac] in a field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Give me some of your son’s mandrakes.” 15 But Leah replied,[ad] “Wasn’t it enough that you’ve taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes too?” “All right,”[ae] Rachel said, “he may go to bed with[af] you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.” 16 When Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must sleep[ag] with me because I have paid for your services[ah] with my son’s mandrakes.” So he went to bed with[ai] her that night. 17 God paid attention[aj] to Leah; she became pregnant[ak] and gave Jacob a son for the fifth time.[al] 18 Then Leah said, “God has granted me a reward[am] because I gave my servant to my husband as a wife.”[an] So she named him Issachar.[ao]
19 Leah became pregnant again and gave Jacob a son for the sixth time.[ap] 20 Then Leah said, “God has given me a good gift. Now my husband will honor me because I have given him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[aq]
21 After that she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
22 Then God took note of[ar] Rachel. He paid attention to her and enabled her to become pregnant.[as] 23 She became pregnant[at] and gave birth to a son. Then she said, “God has taken away my shame.”[au] 24 She named him Joseph,[av] saying, “May the Lord give me yet another son.”
The Flocks of Jacob
25 After Rachel had given birth to[aw] Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send[ax] me on my way so that I can go[ay] home to my own country.[az] 26 Let me take my wives and my children whom I have acquired by working for you.[ba] Then I’ll depart,[bb] because you know how hard I’ve worked for you.”[bc]
27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your sight, please stay here,[bd] for I have learned by divination[be] that the Lord has blessed me on account of you.” 28 He added, “Just name your wages—I’ll pay whatever you want.”[bf]
29 “You know how I have worked for you,” Jacob replied,[bg] “and how well your livestock have fared under my care.[bh] 30 Indeed,[bi] you had little before I arrived,[bj] but now your possessions have increased many times over.[bk] The Lord has blessed you wherever I worked.[bl] But now, how long must it be before I do something for my own family too?”[bm]
31 So Laban asked,[bn] “What should I give you?” “You don’t need to give me a thing,”[bo] Jacob replied,[bp] “but if you agree to this one condition,[bq] I will continue to care for[br] your flocks and protect them: 32 Let me walk among[bs] all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb,[bt] and the spotted or speckled goats.[bu] These animals will be my wages.[bv] 33 My integrity will testify for me[bw] later on.[bx] When you come to verify that I’ve taken only the wages we agreed on,[by] if I have in my possession any goat that is not speckled or spotted or any sheep that is not dark-colored, it will be considered stolen.”[bz] 34 “Agreed!” said Laban, “It will be as you say.”[ca]
35 So that day Laban[cb] removed the male goats that were streaked or spotted, all the female goats that were speckled or spotted (all that had any white on them), and all the dark-colored lambs, and put them in the care[cc] of his sons. 36 Then he separated them from Jacob by a three-day journey,[cd] while[ce] Jacob was taking care of the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37 But Jacob took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees. He made white streaks by peeling them, making the white inner wood in the branches visible. 38 Then he set up the peeled branches in all the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink. He set up the branches in front of the flocks when they were in heat and came to drink.[cf] 39 When the sheep mated[cg] in front of the branches, they[ch] gave birth to young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. 40 Jacob removed these lambs, but he made the rest of the flock face[ci] the streaked and completely dark-colored animals in Laban’s flock. So he made separate flocks for himself and did not mix them with Laban’s flocks. 41 When the stronger females were in heat,[cj] Jacob would set up the branches in the troughs in front of the flock, so they would mate near the branches. 42 But if the animals were weaker, he did not set the branches there.[ck] So the weaker animals ended up belonging to Laban[cl] and the stronger animals to Jacob. 43 In this way Jacob[cm] became extremely prosperous. He owned[cn] large flocks, male and female servants, camels, and donkeys.

- Genesis 30:8 sn The name Naphtali (נַפְתָּלִי, naftali) must mean something like “my struggle” in view of the statement Rachel made in the preceding clause. The name plays on this earlier statement, “[with] a mighty struggle I have struggled with my sister.”
- Genesis 30:9 tn Heb “she took her servant Zilpah and gave her.” The verbs “took” and “gave” are treated as a hendiadys in the translation: “she gave.”
- Genesis 30:10 tn Heb “and Zilpah, the servant of Leah, bore for Jacob a son.”
- Genesis 30:11 tc The statement in the Kethib (consonantal text) appears to mean literally “with good fortune,” if one takes the initial ב (bet) as a preposition indicating accompaniment. The Qere (marginal reading) means “good fortune has arrived.”
- Genesis 30:11 sn The name Gad (גָּד, gad) means “good fortune.” The name reflects Leah’s feeling that good fortune has come her way, as expressed in her statement recorded earlier in the verse.

The irony is that Rachel thought the mandrakes would work for her, and she was willing to trade one night for them. But in that one night Leah became pregnant.
- Genesis 30:19 tn Heb “and she bore a sixth son for Jacob,” i.e., this was the sixth son that Leah had given Jacob.
- Genesis 30:20 sn The name Zebulun (זְבֻלוּן, zevulun) apparently means “honor.” The name plays on the verb used in the statement made earlier in the verse. The Hebrew verb translated “will honor” and the name Zebulun derive from the same root.
- Genesis 30:22 tn Heb “remembered.”
- Genesis 30:22 tn Heb “and God listened to her and opened up her womb.” Since “God” is the subject of the previous clause, the noun has been replaced by the pronoun “he” in the translation for stylistic reasons.

- Genesis 30:23 tn Heb “my reproach.” A “reproach” is a cutting taunt or painful ridicule, but here it probably refers by metonymy to Rachel’s barren condition, which was considered shameful in this culture and was the reason why she was the object of taunting and ridicule.
- Genesis 30:24 sn The name Joseph (יוֹסֵף, yosef) means “may he add.” The name expresses Rachel’s desire to have an additional son. In Hebrew the name sounds like the verb (אָסַף, ʾasaf) translated “taken away” in the earlier statement made in v. 23. So the name, while reflecting Rachel’s hope, was also a reminder that God had removed her shame.
- Genesis 30:25 tn The perfect verbal form is translated as a past perfect because Rachel’s giving birth to Joseph preceded Jacob’s conversation with Laban.
- Genesis 30:25 tn The imperatival form here expresses a request.sn For Jacob to ask to leave would mean that seven more years had passed. Thus all Jacob’s children were born within the range of seven years of each other, with Joseph coming right at the end of the seven years.

Speiser notes that “Jacob finds a way to outwit his father-in-law, through prenatal conditioning of the flock by visual aids—in conformance with universal folk beliefs” (Genesis [AB], 238). Nevertheless, in spite of Jacob’s efforts at animal husbandry, he still attributes the resulting success to God (see 31:5).
- Genesis 30:39 tn The Hebrew verb used here can mean “to be in heat” (see v. 38) or “to mate; to conceive; to become pregnant.” The latter nuance makes better sense in this verse, for the next clause describes them giving birth.

Jacob’s Flocks Increase
25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way(AQ) so I can go back to my own homeland.(AR) 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you,(AS) and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”
27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(AT) please stay. I have learned by divination(AU) that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”(AV) 28 He added, “Name your wages,(AW) and I will pay them.”
29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you(AX) and how your livestock has fared under my care.(AY) 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been.(AZ) But now, when may I do something for my own household?(BA)”
31 “What shall I give you?” he asked.
“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat.(BB) They will be my wages.(BC) 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored,(BD) will be considered stolen.(BE)”

Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat,(BR) Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,(BS) 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. 30 拉結見自己沒有給雅各生孩子,就嫉妒她的姊姊,對雅各說:“你要給我兒子,不然,我要死了。” 2 雅各就向拉結生氣,說:“使你不能生育的是 神,我能代替他嗎?” 3 拉結說:“我的婢女辟拉在這裡,你可以與她親近,使她生子歸我,我就可以從她得到孩子(“得到孩子”直譯是“被建立”)。” 4 於是,拉結把自己的婢女辟拉給了雅各為妾,雅各就與她親近。 5 辟拉懷孕,給雅各生了一個兒子。 6 拉結說:“ 神為我伸了冤,也垂聽了我的聲音,賜給我一個兒子。”所以給他起名叫但。 7 拉結的使女辟拉又懷孕,給雅各生了第二個兒子。 8 拉結說:“我與姊姊大大地相爭(“大大地相爭”直譯是“以 神的相爭來相爭”),我得勝了。”於是給孩子起名叫拿弗他利(“拿弗他利”的意思是“相爭”)。
9 利亞見自己停止生育,就把她的婢女悉帕給了雅各為妾。 10 利亞的婢女悉帕給雅各生了一個兒子。 11 利亞說:“我真幸運。”給他起名叫迦得。 12 利亞的婢女悉帕又給雅各生了第二個兒子。 13 利亞說:“我真有福氣,眾女子都要稱我是有福的。”於是給孩子起名叫亞設。
14 到了收割麥子的時候,流本出去,在田間找到了一些風茄,就拿來給他母親利亞。拉結對利亞說:“請你把你兒子的風茄分一些給我。” 15 利亞回答拉結:“你奪去了我的丈夫,還算小事嗎?你還要奪去我兒子的風茄嗎?”拉結說:“好吧,今夜就讓他與你同睡,來交換你兒子的風茄。” 16 到了晚上,雅各從田間回來,利亞出去迎接他,說:“你要與我親近,因為我實在用我兒子的風茄把你雇下了。”那一夜,雅各就與利亞同睡。 17 神垂聽了利亞的禱告,利亞就懷孕,給雅各生了第五個兒子。 18 利亞說:“ 神給了我酬報,因為我把我的婢女給了我的丈夫。”於是給孩子起名叫以薩迦。 19 利亞又懷孕,給雅各生了第六個兒子。 20 利亞說:“ 神把美好的禮物送了給我,這一次我的丈夫要抬舉我了,因為我給他生了六個兒子。”於是給孩子起名叫西布倫。 21 後來利亞又生了一個女兒,給她起名叫底拿。 22 神顧念拉結,垂聽了她的禱告,使她能生育。 23 拉結就懷孕,生了一個兒子,說:“ 神把我的恥辱除去了。” 24 於是給孩子起名叫約瑟,說:“願耶和華再給我一個兒子。”
雅各向拉班訂定工價
25 拉結生了約瑟以後,雅各對拉班說:“請你讓我走吧,我好回到自己的地方,自己的故鄉去。 26 請你把我服事你所得的妻子和兒女都給我,讓我回去;我怎樣服事了你,你是知道的。” 27 拉班對他說:“我若蒙你賞臉,請你不要走,因為我得了神旨,知道耶和華賜福給我,是因你的緣故。” 28 他又說:“請你定你的工資吧,我必給你。” 29 雅各對拉班說:“我怎樣服事了你,你的牲畜在我手裡情形怎樣,你是知道的。 30 我沒來以前,你所有的很少,現在卻大大地增加了;耶和華隨著我的腳蹤賜福給你。現在,我甚麼時候才能興家立業呢?” 31 拉班問:“我該給你甚麼?”雅各回答:“你甚麼也不必給我;只要你答應我這一件事,我就繼續牧放看守你的羊群。 32 今天我要走遍你的羊群,凡有斑點的羊、黑色的綿羊和有斑點的山羊,都挑出來,作為我的工資。 33 日後你來查看我的工資的時候,我好對你證明我的公道。凡在我手裡沒有斑點的山羊,或不是黑色的綿羊,都算是我偷來的。” 34 拉班回答:“好吧,就照你的話去作。” 35 當日,拉班把有條紋和有斑點的公山羊、有斑點和有白紋的母山羊,以及所有黑色的綿羊,都挑出來交在自己的眾子手裡。 36 又使自己和雅各之間相距有三天的路程。雅各就牧放拉班其餘的羊群。
雅各使用詭計致富
37 雅各拿楊樹、杏樹和楓樹的嫩枝子,把樹皮剝成白色的條紋,使枝子露出白的部分來。 38 然後把剝了皮的枝子插在水溝和水槽裡,枝子正對著來喝水的羊群。羊群來喝水的時候,就彼此交配。 39 羊群對著枝子交配,就生下有條紋和有斑點的小羊來。 40 雅各把羊羔分別出來,使拉班的羊,對著這些有條紋的和所有黑色的羊。他為自己另組羊群,不把牠們放在拉班的羊群中。 41 到了肥壯的羊群要交配的時候,雅各就在羊群的面前把枝子插在水溝裡,使牠們在枝子中間彼此交配。 42 但當瘦弱的羊群交配的時候,雅各就不插枝子。這樣,瘦弱的就歸拉班,肥壯的就歸雅各。 43 於是,雅各變得非常富有,擁有很多羊群、僕婢、駱駝和驢。

30 And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
2 And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?
3 And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.
4 And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
5 And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son.
6 And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.
7 And Bilhah Rachel's maid conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son.
8 And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.
9 When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.
10 And Zilpah Leah's maid bare Jacob a son.
11 And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.
12 And Zilpah Leah's maid bare Jacob a second son.
13 And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.
14 And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes.
15 And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son's mandrakes.
16 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son's mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
17 And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth son.
18 And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.
19 And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
20 And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.
21 And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
23 And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:
24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son.
25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
27 And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake.
28 And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.
29 And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the Lord hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
31 And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock.
32 I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.
33 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.
34 And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
35 And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36 And he set three days' journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.
37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
38 And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.
40 And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban's cattle.
41 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.
43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.
