29 13 Jacob cometh to Laban and serveth seven years for Rachel. 23 Leah brought to his bed instead of Rachel. 27 He serveth seven years more for Rachel. 31 Leah conceiveth and beareth four sons.
1 Then Jacob [a]lift up his feet and came into the [b]East country.
2 And as he looked about, behold, there was a well in the field, [c]and lo, three flocks of sheep lay thereby (for at that well were the flocks watered) and there was a great stone upon the well’s mouth.
3 And thither were all the flocks gathered, and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.
4 And Jacob said unto them, My [d]brethren, whence be ye? And they answered, We are of Haran.
5 Then he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? Who said, We know him.
6 Again he said unto them, [e]Is he in good health? And they answered, He is in good health, and behold, his daughter Rachel cometh with the sheep.
7 Then he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep and go feed them.
8 But they said, We may not, until all the flocks be brought together, and till men roll the stone from the well’s mouth, that we may water the sheep.
9 ¶ While he talked with them, Rachel also came with her father’s sheep, for she kept them.
10 And as soon as Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, then came Jacob near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.
11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept.
12 (For Jacob told Rachel, that he was her father’s [f]brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son) then she ran and told her father.
13 And when Laban heard tell of Jacob his sister’s son, he ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house: and he told Laban [g]all these things.
14 To whom Laban said, Well, thou art my [h]bone and my flesh, and he abode with him the space of a month.
15 ¶ For Laban said unto Jacob, Though thou be my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall be thy wages?
16 Now Laban had two daughters, the elder called Leah, and the younger called Rachel.
17 And Leah was [i]tender eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and fair.
18 And Jacob loved Rachel, and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
19 Then Laban answered, It is better that I give her thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed unto him but a [j]few days, because he loved her.
21 ¶ Then Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife, that I may go in to her: for my [k]term is ended.
22 Wherefore Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
23 But [l]when the evening was come, he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him, and he went in unto her.
24 And Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah, to be her servant.
25 But when the morning was come, behold, it was Leah. Then said he to Laban, Wherefore hast thou done thus to me? did not I serve thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?
26 And Laban answered, It is not the [m]manner of this place, to give the younger before the elder.
27 Fulfill seven years for her, and we will also give thee this for the service, which thou shalt serve me yet seven years more.
28 Then Jacob did so, and fulfilled her seven years, so he gave him Rachel his daughter to be his wife.
29 Laban also gave to Rachel his daughter, Bilhah his maid to be her servant.
30 So entered he in to Rachel also, and loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served him yet seven years more.
31 ¶ When the Lord saw that Leah was despised, he [n]made her [o]fruitful: but Rachel was barren.
32 And Leah conceived and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Because the [p]Lord hath looked upon my tribulation, now therefore mine husband will [q]love me.
33 And she conceived again and bare a son, and said, Because the Lord heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also, and she called his name Simeon.
34 And she conceived again and bare a son, and said, Now at this time will my husband keep me company, because I have borne him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
35 Moreover she conceived again and bare a son, saying, Now will I [r]praise the Lord: (A)therefore she called his name Judah, and [s]left bearing.

Miệng giếng bị đậy bằng một phiến đá lớn. 3 Khi tất cả các bầy chiên đã tụ tập đông đủ tại đó, người ta lăn phiến đá khỏi miệng giếng để chiên uống nước, xong họ lăn phiến đá đậy miệng giếng lại. 4 Gia-cốp hỏi họ, “Thưa anh em, anh em từ đâu đến đây?”
Họ đáp, “Chúng tôi từ Cha-ran đến.”
5 Chàng hỏi tiếp, “Các anh em có biết ông La-ban cháu của cụ Na-hô không?”
Họ trả lời, “Chúng tôi biết ông ấy.”
6 Chàng lại hỏi, “Ông ấy mạnh khỏe không?”
Họ đáp, “Ông ấy mạnh khỏe. Nầy, Ra-chên con gái ông ấy đang dẫn bầy chiên đến kìa.”
7 Chàng nói, “Trời hãy còn sớm, chưa tới giờ nhóm họp các bầy chiên lại. Anh em hãy cho chiên uống nước, xong rồi dẫn chúng đi ăn cỏ lại đi.”
8 Nhưng họ trả lời, “Chúng tôi không thể cho chiên mình uống trước được. Chúng tôi phải đợi các bầy chiên kia đến đông đủ, rồi mới lăn phiến đá chận miệng giếng ra, bấy giờ mới có thể cho các bầy chiên uống nước.”
9 Ðang khi chàng nói chuyện với họ, Ra-chên dẫn bầy chiên của cha nàng đến, vì nàng là một người nữ chăn chiên. 10 Gia-cốp vừa trông thấy Ra-chên, con gái của La-ban cậu chàng, và bầy chiên của La-ban cậu chàng, thì Gia-cốp lại gần và lăn phiến đá đậy miệng giếng ra cho bầy chiên của La-ban cậu chàng uống nước. 11 Ðoạn Gia-cốp hôn Ra-chên rồi bật khóc. 12 Gia-cốp nói cho Ra-chên biết chàng là cháu của cha nàng và là con trai của Rê-be-ca. Nàng liền chạy báo tin cho cha nàng hay. 13 Khi La-ban nghe báo rằng con trai của em gái ông đến, ông vội vàng chạy ra gặp chàng, ôm lấy chàng và hôn, rồi đưa chàng về nhà mình. Chàng kể lại cho La-ban biết mọi chuyện. 14 Nghe vậy La-ban bảo chàng, “Cháu đúng là cốt nhục của cậu rồi.” Sau đó chàng ở lại với ông một tháng.
Gia-cốp Kết Hôn với Lê-a và Ra-chên
15 La-ban nói với Gia-cốp, “Chẳng lẽ cháu là bà con của cậu mà cháu sẽ làm việc cho cậu không công sao? Cháu hãy nói cho cậu biết cháu muốn cậu trả tiền công cho cháu như thế nào?” 16 Lúc ấy La-ban có hai con gái; cô chị tên Lê-a và cô em tên Ra-chên. 17 Cặp mắt của Lê-a hơi yếu, nhưng Ra-chên thì xinh đẹp cả dáng người lẫn gương mặt. 18 Lúc ấy Gia-cốp đã yêu Ra-chên, nên chàng nói, “Vì Ra-chên con gái út của cậu, cháu sẽ làm việc cho cậu bảy năm.”
19 La-ban bèn nói, “Thà cậu gả nó cho cháu còn hơn gả cho người khác. Hãy ở lại đây với cậu.” 20 Vậy Gia-cốp làm việc bảy năm để được Ra-chên, nhưng vì yêu nàng nên chàng coi bảy năm như chỉ vài ngày.
21 Sau đó Gia-cốp nói với La-ban, “Xin cậu giao vợ cháu cho cháu, để cháu được gần nàng, vì cháu đã làm việc cho cậu đủ hạn rồi.” 22 La-ban bèn tổ chức một bữa tiệc khoản đãi mọi người ở đó. 23 Tối đến ông bắt Lê-a con gái lớn của ông và trao cho Gia-cốp để chàng đến với nàng. 24 La-ban cũng ban nữ đầy tớ của ông là Xinh-pa cho Lê-a để làm nữ tỳ của nàng. 25 Ðến sáng chàng mới vỡ lẽ, thì ra là nàng Lê-a. Gia-cốp bèn đến hỏi La-ban, “Cậu đã làm gì cho cháu vậy? Chẳng phải vì Ra-chên mà cháu đã làm việc cho cậu sao? Tại sao cậu lại gạt cháu?”
26 La-ban đáp, “Theo phong tục ở xứ nầy, người ta không được gả em trước chị. 27 Cháu cứ hưởng tuần trăng mật với cô chị đi, rồi cậu mợ sẽ gả cho cháu cô em luôn; nhưng về cô em nầy, cháu phải làm việc cho cậu thêm bảy năm nữa.” 28 Gia-cốp đành phải làm theo như vậy và hưởng tuần trăng mật với cô chị. Sau đó La-ban gả Ra-chên con gái ông để làm vợ chàng. 29 La-ban cũng ban một nữ đầy tớ của ông là Bin-ha cho Ra-chên con gái ông để làm nữ tỳ của nàng. 30 Gia-cốp đến với Ra-chên. Chàng yêu Ra-chên hơn Lê-a. Rồi chàng tiếp tục làm việc cho La-ban thêm bảy năm nữa.
Các Con của Gia-cốp và Lê-a
31 Chúa thấy Lê-a không được thương nên Ngài cho bà có con, còn Ra-chên thì hiếm muộn. 32 Lê-a thụ thai và sinh một con trai. Bà đặt tên nó là Ru-bên, vì bà nói, “Chúa đã thấy nỗi khổ của tôi, nên bây giờ thế nào chồng tôi cũng sẽ yêu tôi.” 33 Bà lại thụ thai nữa và sinh một con trai. Bà nói, “Vì Chúa đã thấu rõ rằng tôi bị ghét, nên Ngài đã ban cho tôi đứa con trai nầy nữa.” Bà đặt tên nó là Si-mê-ôn. 34 Bà lại có thai nữa và sinh một con trai. Bà nói, “Lần nầy chồng tôi sẽ gắn bó với tôi, vì tôi đã sinh cho chàng ba con trai.” Vì vậy bà đặt tên nó là Lê-vi. 35 Bà lại mang thai nữa và sinh một con trai. Bà nói, “Lần nầy tôi chỉ còn biết ca ngợi Chúa mà thôi.” Vì thế bà đặt tên nó là Giu-đa. Sau đó bà ngưng sinh sản.

Jacob Meets Rachel
29 So Jacob went on his journey (A)and came to the land of the people of the East. 2 And he looked, and saw a (B)well in the field; and behold, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks. A large stone was on the well’s mouth. 3 Now all the flocks would be gathered there; and they would roll the stone from the well’s mouth, water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the well’s mouth.
4 And Jacob said to them, “My brethren, where are you from?”
And they said, “We are from (C)Haran.”
5 Then he said to them, “Do you know (D)Laban the son of Nahor?”
And they said, “We know him.”
6 So he said to them, (E)“Is he well?”
And they said, “He is well. And look, his daughter Rachel (F)is coming with the sheep.”
7 Then he said, “Look, it is still [a]high day; it is not time for the cattle to be gathered together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them.”
8 But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and they have rolled the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.”
9 Now while he was still speaking with them, (G)Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess. 10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, that Jacob went near and (H)rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother. 11 Then Jacob (I)kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept. 12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was (J)her father’s relative and that he was Rebekah’s son. (K)So she ran and told her father.
13 Then it came to pass, when Laban heard the report about Jacob his sister’s son, that (L)he ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. So he told Laban all these things. 14 And Laban said to him, (M)“Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” And he stayed with him for a month.
Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel
15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, (N)what should your wages be?” 16 Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah’s eyes were [b]delicate, but Rachel was (O)beautiful of form and appearance.
18 Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, (P)“I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.”
19 And Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me.” 20 So Jacob (Q)served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may (R)go in to her.” 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and (S)made a feast. 23 Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. 24 And Laban gave his maid (T)Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a maid. 25 So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you (U)deceived me?”
26 And Laban said, “It must not be done so in our [c]country, to give the younger before the firstborn. 27 (V)Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years.”
28 Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also. 29 And Laban gave his maid (W)Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as a maid. 30 Then Jacob also went in to Rachel, and he also (X)loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with Laban (Y)still another seven years.
The Children of Jacob
31 When the Lord (Z)saw that Leah was [d]unloved, He (AA)opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. 32 So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name [e]Reuben; for she said, “The Lord has surely (AB)looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me.” 33 Then she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am [f]unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” And she called his name [g]Simeon. 34 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called [h]Levi. 35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name (AC)Judah.[i] Then she stopped bearing.
