Jacob Escapes from Esau

41 So Esau (A)hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, (B)“The days of mourning for my father [a]are at hand; (C)then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

42 And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, “Surely your brother Esau (D)comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban (E)in Haran. 44 And stay with him a (F)few days, until your brother’s fury turns away, 45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?”

46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, (G)“I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; (H)if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

Jacob Sent to His Uncle Laban

28 Then Isaac called Jacob and (I)blessed him, and [b]charged him, and said to him: (J)“You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. (K)Arise, go to (L)Padan Aram, to the house of (M)Bethuel your mother’s father; and take yourself a wife from there of the daughters of (N)Laban your mother’s brother.

“May (O)God Almighty bless you,
And make you (P)fruitful and multiply you,
That you may be an assembly of peoples;
And give you (Q)the blessing of Abraham,
To you and your descendants with you,
That you may inherit the land
(R)In[c] which you are a stranger,
Which God gave to Abraham.”

So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Padan Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Esau Marries Mahalath

Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Padan Aram to take himself a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padan Aram. Also Esau saw (S)that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father Isaac. So Esau went to Ishmael and (T)took (U)Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, (V)the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife in addition to the wives he had.

41 So Esau (A)held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said [a]to himself, “(B)The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 Now when the words of her elder son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she sent word and called her younger son Jacob, and said to him, “Behold your brother Esau is consoling himself concerning you by planning to kill you. 43 Now then, my son, (C)obey my voice, and arise, [b]flee to (D)Haran, to my brother (E)Laban! 44 Stay with him (F)a few days, until your brother’s fury [c]subsides, 45 until your brother’s anger [d]against you subsides and he forgets (G)what you did to him. Then I will send word and get you from there. Why should I lose you both in one day?”

46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am tired of [e]living because of (H)the daughters of Heth; (I)if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

Jacob Is Sent Away

28 So Isaac called Jacob and (J)blessed him and commanded him, [f]saying to him, “(K)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of (L)Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother. May [g](M)God Almighty (N)bless you and (O)make you fruitful and (P)multiply you, so that you may become a (Q)multitude of peoples. May He also give you the (R)blessing of Abraham, to you and to your [h]descendants with you, so that you may (S)possess the land where you (T)live as a stranger, which God gave to Abraham.” Then (U)Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take to himself a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, saying, “(V)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Paddan-aram. So Esau saw that (W)the daughters of Canaan displeased [i]his father Isaac; and Esau went to Ishmael, and [j]married, (X)besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth.
