24 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years, and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.
2 And Abraham said to the eldest servant of his house [Eliezer of Damascus], who ruled over all that he had, I beg of you, put your hand under my thigh;(A)
3 And you shall swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I have settled,
4 But you shall go to my country and to my relatives and take [a]a wife for my son Isaac.
5 The servant said to him, But perhaps the woman will not be willing to come along after me to this country. Must I take your son to the country from which you came?
6 Abraham said to him, See to it that you do not take my son back there.
7 The Lord, the God of heaven, Who took me from my father’s house, from the land of my family and my birth, Who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, To your offspring I will give this land—He will send His [b]Angel before you, and you will take a wife from there for my son.
8 And if the woman should [c]not be willing to go along after you, then you will be clear from this oath; only you must not take my son back there.
9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter.
10 And the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking some of all his master’s treasures with him; thus he journeyed to Mesopotamia [between the Tigris and the Euphrates], to the city of Nahor [Abraham’s brother].
11 And he made his camels to kneel down outside the city by a well of water at the time of the evening when women go out to draw water.
12 And he said, O Lord, God of my master Abraham, I pray You, cause me to meet with good success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
13 See, I stand here by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming to draw water.
14 And let it so be that the girl to whom I say, I pray you, let down your jar that I may drink, and she replies, Drink, and I will give your camels drink also—let her be the one whom You have selected and appointed and indicated for Your servant Isaac [to be a wife to him]; and by it I shall know that You have shown kindness and faithfulness to my master.
15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, out came Rebekah, who was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Nahor the brother of Abraham, with her water jar on her shoulder.
16 And the girl was very beautiful and attractive, chaste and modest, and unmarried. And she went down to the well, filled her water jar, and came up.
17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, I pray you, let me drink a little water from your water jar.
18 And she said, Drink, my lord; and she quickly let down her jar onto her hand and gave him a drink.
19 When she had given him a drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also, until they finish drinking.
20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well and drew water for all his camels.
21 The man stood gazing at her in silence, waiting to know if the Lord had made his trip prosperous.
22 And when the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold earring or nose ring of half a shekel in weight, and for her hands two bracelets of ten shekels in weight in gold,
23 And said, Whose daughter are you? I pray you, tell me: Is there room in your father’s house for us to lodge there?
24 And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah and [her husband] Nahor.
25 She said also to him, We have both straw and provender (fodder) enough, and also room in which to lodge.
26 The man bowed down his head and worshiped the Lord
27 And said, Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, Who has not left my master bereft and destitute of His loving-kindness and steadfastness. As for me, going on the way [of obedience and faith] the Lord led me to the house of my master’s kinsmen.
28 The girl related to her mother’s household what had happened.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban, and Laban ran out to the man at the well.
30 For when he saw the earring or nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and when he heard Rebekah his sister saying, The man said this to me, he went to the man and found him standing by the camels at the well.
31 He cried, Come in, you blessed of the Lord! Why do you stand outside? For I have made the house ready and have prepared a place for the camels.
32 So the man came into the house; and [Laban] ungirded his camels and gave straw and provender for the camels and water to bathe his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.
33 A meal was set before him, but he said, [d]I will not eat until I have told of my errand. And [Laban] said, Speak on.
34 And he said, I am Abraham’s servant.
35 And the Lord has blessed my master mightily, and he has become great; and He has given him flocks, herds, silver, gold, menservants, maidservants, camels, and asses.
36 And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old, and to him he has given all that he has.
37 And my master made me swear, saying, You must not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell,
38 But you shall go to my father’s house and to my family and take a wife for my son.
39 And I said to my master, But suppose the woman will not follow me.
40 And he said to me, The Lord, in Whose presence I walk [habitually], will send His [e]Angel with you and prosper your way, and you will take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house.
41 Then you shall be clear from my oath, when you come to my kindred; and if they do not give her to you, you shall be free and innocent of my oath.
42 I came today to the well and said, O Lord, God of my master Abraham, if You are now causing me to go on my way prosperously—
43 See, I am standing by the well of water; now let it be that when the maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, I pray you, give me a little water from your [water] jar to drink,
44 And if she says to me, You drink, and I will draw water for your camels also, let that same woman be the one whom the Lord has selected and indicated for my master’s son.
45 And before I had finished praying in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her [water] jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the well and drew water. And I said to her, I pray you, let me have a drink.
46 And she quickly let down her [water] jar from her shoulder and said, Drink, and I will water your camels also. So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also.
47 I asked her, Whose daughter are you? She said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him. And I put the earring or nose ring on her face and the bracelets on her arms.
48 And I bowed down my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, Who had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter to his son.
49 And now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master [showing faithfulness to him], tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right or to the left.
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, The thing comes forth from the Lord; we cannot speak bad or good to you.
51 Rebekah is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has said.
52 And when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the ground before the Lord.
53 And the servant brought out jewels of silver, jewels of gold, and garments and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and her mother.
54 Then they ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed there all night. And in the morning they arose, and he said. Send me away to my master.
55 But [Rebekah’s] brother and mother said, Let the girl stay with us a few days—at least ten; then she may go.
56 But [the servant] said to them, Do not hinder and delay me, seeing that the Lord has caused me to go prosperously on my way. Send me away, that I may go to my master.
57 And they said, We will call the girl and ask her [what is] her desire.
58 So they called Rebekah and said to her, Will you go with this man? And she said, I will go.
59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse [Deborah] and Abraham’s servant and his men.
60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, You are our sister; may you become the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let your posterity possess the gate of their enemies.
61 And Rebekah and her maids arose and followed the man upon their camels. Thus the servant took Rebekah and went on his way.
62 Now Isaac had returned from going to the well Beer-lahai-roi [A well to the Living One Who sees me], for he [now] dwelt in the South country (the Negeb).
63 And Isaac went out to meditate and bow down [in prayer] in the open country in the evening; and he looked up and saw that, behold, the camels were coming.
64 And Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel.
65 For she [had] said to the servant, Who is that man walking across the field to meet us? And the servant [had] said, He is my master. So she took a veil and concealed herself with it.
66 And the servant told Isaac everything that he had done.
67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and he took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her; thus Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

- Genesis 24:4 This chapter is highly illustrative of God the Father, Who sends forth His Holy Spirit to win the consent of the individual soul to become the bride of His Son. Keep these resemblances constantly in mind as you read and see how the story unfolds. First meet the Father and note His concern about His Son’s bride. Then get acquainted with the Holy Spirit’s great, selfless heart, Whose one purpose is to win the girl for His Master’s Son. Then meet the Son and note His tenderness as He claims His bride. The longest chapter in Genesis is devoted to this important story.

24 Abraham era viejo(A), entrado en años[a]; y el Señor había bendecido a Abraham en todo(B). 2 Y Abraham dijo a su siervo, el más viejo de su casa, que era mayordomo de todo lo que poseía(C): «Te ruego que pongas tu mano debajo de mi muslo(D), 3 y te haré jurar por el Señor, Dios de los cielos y Dios de la tierra(E), que no tomarás mujer para mi hijo(F) de las hijas de los cananeos(G), entre los cuales yo habito, 4 sino que irás a mi tierra y a mis parientes(H), y tomarás mujer para mi hijo Isaac».
5 Y el siervo le dijo: «Tal vez la mujer no quiera seguirme a esta tierra. ¿Debo volver y llevar a su hijo a la tierra de donde usted vino?». 6 «De ningún modo debes llevar allá a mi hijo(I)», le respondió Abraham. 7 «El Señor, Dios de los cielos(J), que me tomó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra donde nací, y que me habló y me juró, diciendo: “A tu descendencia[b] daré esta tierra(K)”, Él mandará Su ángel delante de ti(L), y tomarás de allí mujer para mi hijo. 8 Si la mujer no quiere seguirte, quedarás libre de este mi juramento(M). Solo que no lleves allá a mi hijo(N)».
9 El siervo puso la mano debajo del muslo de Abraham su señor(O), y le juró sobre este asunto.
Rebeca es escogida
10 Entonces el siervo tomó diez camellos de entre los camellos de su señor, y partió con toda clase de bienes de su señor en su mano(P); se levantó y fue a Mesopotamia[c](Q), a la ciudad de Nacor. 11 El siervo hizo que se arrodillaran los camellos fuera de la ciudad, junto al pozo de agua(R), al atardecer, a la hora en que las mujeres salen por agua(S), 12 y dijo: «Oh Señor, Dios de mi señor Abraham(T), te ruego que me des éxito[d] hoy(U), y que tengas misericordia de mi señor Abraham. 13 Yo estoy de pie aquí junto a la fuente de agua(V), y las hijas de los hombres de la ciudad salen para sacar agua. 14 Que sea la joven a quien yo diga: “Por favor, baje su cántaro para que yo beba”, y que responda: “Beba, y también daré de beber a sus camellos”, la que Tú has designado para Tu siervo Isaac. Por ello sabré que has mostrado misericordia a mi señor».
15 Y sucedió que antes de haber terminado de hablar, Rebeca(W), hija de[e] Betuel, hijo de Milca(X), mujer de Nacor(Y), hermano de Abraham, salió con el cántaro sobre su hombro. 16 La joven era muy hermosa(Z), virgen, ningún hombre la había conocido. Bajó ella a la fuente, llenó su cántaro y subió.
17 Entonces el siervo corrió a su encuentro, y le dijo: «Le ruego que me dé a beber un poco de agua de su cántaro(AA)». 18 «Beba(AB), señor mío», le dijo ella. Y enseguida bajó el cántaro a su mano, y le dio de beber. 19 Cuando había terminado de darle de beber, dijo: «Sacaré también para sus camellos(AC) hasta que hayan terminado de beber».
20 Rápidamente vació el cántaro en el abrevadero, y corrió otra vez a la fuente para sacar agua, y sacó para todos sus camellos. 21 Entretanto el hombre la observaba en silencio[f], para saber si el Señor había dado éxito o no(AD) a su viaje.
22 Cuando los camellos habían terminado de beber, el hombre tomó un anillo de oro que pesaba medio siclo[g] (5.7 gramos), y dos brazaletes[h] que pesaban diez siclos (114 gramos) de oro(AE). 23 Y le preguntó: «¿De quién es hija? Dígame, le ruego, ¿hay en la casa de su padre lugar para hospedarnos?». 24 Ella le respondió: «Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo que Milca dio a Nacor(AF)». 25 También le dijo: «Tenemos suficiente paja y forraje, y lugar para hospedarse».
26 Entonces el hombre se postró y adoró al Señor(AG), 27 y dijo: «Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de mi señor Abraham(AH), que no ha dejado de mostrar Su misericordia y Su fidelidad(AI) hacia mi señor. El Señor me ha guiado(AJ) en el camino a la casa de los hermanos de mi señor».
Rebeca confirma su elección
28 La joven corrió y contó estas cosas a los de la casa de su madre(AK). 29 Rebeca tenía un hermano que se llamaba Labán(AL), y Labán salió corriendo hacia el hombre a la fuente. 30 Cuando Labán vio el anillo y los brazaletes en las manos de su hermana, y oyó las palabras de su hermana Rebeca, que le contó: «Esto es lo que el hombre me dijo[i]», Labán fue al hombre, que estaba con los camellos junto a la fuente,
31 y le dijo: «Entra(AM), bendito del Señor(AN). ¿Por qué estás afuera? Yo he preparado la casa(AO) y un lugar para los camellos». 32 Entonces el hombre entró en la casa, y Labán descargó los camellos y les dio[j] paja y forraje, y trajo agua para que se lavaran los pies(AP), él y los hombres que estaban con él. 33 Pero cuando la comida fue puesta delante de él para que comiera, dijo: «No comeré hasta que haya dicho el propósito[k] de mi viaje». «Habla», le dijo Labán. 34 «Soy siervo de Abraham(AQ)», comenzó a decir. 35 «Y el Señor ha bendecido en gran manera a mi señor(AR), que se ha enriquecido[l]. Le ha dado ovejas y vacas, plata y oro(AS), siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos. 36 Sara, la mujer de mi señor, le dio un hijo a mi señor en su vejez[m](AT); y mi señor le ha dado a él todo lo que posee(AU).
37 »Mi señor me hizo jurar: “No tomarás mujer para mi hijo de entre las hijas de los cananeos, en cuya tierra habito(AV), 38 sino que irás a la casa de mi padre y a mis parientes, y tomarás mujer para mi hijo”. 39 Yo dije a mi señor: “Tal vez la mujer no quiera seguirme(AW)”. 40 Y él me respondió: “El Señor(AX), delante de quien he andado(AY), enviará Su ángel contigo para dar éxito a tu viaje(AZ), y tomarás mujer para mi hijo de entre mis parientes y de la casa de mi padre. 41 Entonces cuando llegues a mis parientes quedarás libre de mi juramento(BA); y si ellos no te la dan, también quedarás libre de mi juramento”.
42 »Hoy llegué a la fuente, y dije: “Oh Señor, Dios de mi señor Abraham(BB), si ahora quieres, Tú puedes dar éxito a mi viaje(BC) en el cual ando. 43 Yo estoy parado aquí junto a la fuente de agua(BD). Que la doncella que salga a sacar agua, y a quien yo diga: ‘Le ruego que me dé a beber un poco de agua de su cántaro(BE)’, 44 y ella me diga, ‘Beba, y también sacaré para sus camellos’, que sea ella la mujer que el Señor ha designado para el hijo de mi señor”.
45 »Antes de que yo hubiera terminado de hablar en mi corazón(BF), Rebeca salió con su cántaro al hombro(BG), y bajó a la fuente y sacó agua, y yo le dije: “Le ruego que me dé de beber(BH)”. 46 Y ella enseguida bajó el cántaro de su hombro, y dijo: “Beba, y daré de beber también a sus camellos(BI)”; de modo que bebí, y ella dio de beber también a los camellos.
47 »Entonces le pregunté[n]: “¿De quién es hija?”. Y ella contestó: “Soy hija de Betuel, hijo de Nacor, que le dio a luz Milca(BJ)”; y puse el anillo en su nariz, y los brazaletes en sus manos(BK). 48 Y me postré y adoré al Señor, y bendije al Señor, Dios de mi señor Abraham(BL), que me había guiado por camino verdadero para tomar la hija del pariente[o] de mi señor(BM) para su hijo. 49 Ahora pues, si han de mostrar bondad y sinceridad(BN) con mi señor, díganmelo; y si no, díganmelo también, para que vaya yo a la mano derecha o a la izquierda».
50 Labán y Betuel respondieron: «Del Señor ha salido esto(BO). No podemos decir que está mal ni que está bien(BP). 51 Mira, Rebeca está delante de ti, tómala y vete, y que sea ella la mujer del hijo de tu señor, como el Señor ha dicho». 52 Cuando el siervo de Abraham escuchó sus palabras, se postró en tierra delante del[p] Señor(BQ). 53 Entonces el siervo sacó objetos de plata, objetos de oro(BR) y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También dio cosas preciosas a su hermano y a su madre.
54 Después él y los hombres que estaban con él comieron y bebieron y pasaron allí la noche. Cuando se levantaron por la mañana, el siervo dijo: «Envíenme a mi señor(BS)». 55 Pero el hermano y la madre de Rebeca dijeron: «Permite que la joven se quede con nosotros unos días(BT), quizá diez; después se irá». 56 «No me detengan», les dijo el siervo, «puesto que el Señor ha dado éxito a mi viaje(BU); envíenme para que vaya a mi señor». 57 «Llamaremos a la joven», respondieron ellos, «y le preguntaremos cuáles son sus deseos[q]».
58 Entonces llamaron a Rebeca y le dijeron: «¿Te irás con este hombre?». «Iré», dijo ella. 59 Enviaron, pues, a su hermana Rebeca y a su nodriza(BV) con el siervo de Abraham y sus hombres. 60 Bendijeron a Rebeca y le dijeron:
«Que tú, hermana nuestra,
Te conviertas en millares de miríadas(BW),
Y posean tus descendientes[r]
La puerta de los que los aborrecen(BX)».
Isaac y Rebeca se encuentran
61 Rebeca se levantó con sus doncellas y, montadas en los camellos, siguieron al hombre. El siervo, pues, tomó a Rebeca y se fue. 62 Isaac había venido a Beer Lajai Roi[s](BY), pues habitaba en la tierra del Neguev[t](BZ).
63 Y por la tarde Isaac salió al campo a meditar[u](CA). Alzó los ojos y vio(CB) que venían unos camellos. 64 Rebeca alzó los ojos, y cuando vio a Isaac, bajó del camello, 65 y dijo al siervo: «¿Quién es ese hombre que camina por el campo a nuestro encuentro?». «Es mi señor», le respondió el siervo. Y ella tomó el velo y se cubrió. 66 El siervo contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho. 67 Entonces Isaac la trajo a la tienda de su madre Sara, y tomó a Rebeca(CC) y ella fue su mujer, y la amó(CD). Así se consoló Isaac después de la muerte de su madre(CE).
