The Seventh Day, God Rests
2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and (A)all the host of them. 2 And (B)on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
The Creation of Man and Woman
4 (C)These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
5 When no (D)bush of the field[a] was yet in the land[b] and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man (E)to work the ground, 6 and a mist[c] was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of (F)dust from the ground and (G)breathed into his (H)nostrils the breath of life, and (I)the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord God planted a (J)garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. (K)The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, (L)and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of (M)Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the (N)Tigris, which flows east of Assyria.[d] And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The Lord God took the man (O)and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (P)you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat[e] of it you (Q)shall surely die.”
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; (R)I will make him a helper fit for[f] him.” 19 (S)Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed[g] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and (T)brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam[h] there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a (U)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[i] into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“This at last is (V)bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was (W)taken out of Man.”[j]
24 (X)Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

porque cesó ese día todo el trabajo que había hecho en la creación.

4 Esa es la historia de la creación del cielo y la tierra.[a] La siguiente es la historia de lo que ocurrió después que el SEÑOR Dios hizo los cielos y la tierra. 5 Aun no se cultivaba ninguna planta ni crecía ninguna hierba silvestre en los campos porque el SEÑOR Dios no había hecho llover sobre la tierra y no había ningún ser humano que trabajara la tierra. 6 Pero salía agua de ella y rociaba todo el suelo. 7 El SEÑOR Dios formó al hombre[b] tomando polvo de la tierra, sopló en su nariz aliento de vida y el hombre se convirtió en un ser viviente.
8 Luego el SEÑOR Dios plantó un jardín en el Edén[c], en el oriente[d] y allí puso al hombre que había formado. 9 El SEÑOR Dios hizo que del suelo creciera toda clase de árboles hermosos de frutos comestibles y deliciosos. El árbol de la vida se encontraba en medio del jardín y allí también estaba el árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal.
10 Un río del Edén regaba el jardín. Este río recibía agua de cuatro ríos distintos. 11 El primero se llamaba Pisón y corría por toda la región de Javilá[e], donde hay oro. 12 El oro de esa región es de buena calidad, y también hay bedelio[f] y ónice. 13 El segundo río se llamaba Guijón y corría por toda la región de Cus[g]. 14 El tercer río se llamaba Tigris y corría por el oriente de Asiria. El cuarto río era el Éufrates.[h]
15 El SEÑOR Dios tomó al hombre y lo puso en el jardín del Edén para que lo cultivara y lo cuidara. 16 Luego el SEÑOR Dios le ordenó al hombre: «Puedes comer libremente de cualquier árbol en el jardín, 17 pero no debes comer del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal porque el día que lo hagas, sin duda morirás».
En buena compañía
18 Entonces el SEÑOR Dios dijo: «No le hace bien al hombre estar solo, haré a un ser capaz de ayudarlo y que sea como él».
19 Entonces el SEÑOR Dios formó de la tierra a todos los animales del campo y a todas las aves del cielo. Los llevó al hombre para ver cómo los iba a llamar y con ese nombre se quedó cada ser viviente. 20 El hombre le dio nombre a todos los animales domésticos, a todas las aves del cielo y a todos los animales silvestres; pero ninguno de ellos resultó capaz de formar pareja con él para ayudarlo. 21 Entonces el SEÑOR Dios hizo que el hombre durmiera profundamente y mientras dormía le quitó una parte de su costado y rellenó esa parte con carne. 22 Después, de esa parte de su costado el SEÑOR Dios hizo una mujer y se la llevó al hombre. 23 El hombre dijo:
«¡Al fin! ¡Esta es hueso de mis huesos
y carne de mi carne!
La llamaré “mujer”[i],
porque fue sacada del hombre».
24 Por esa razón el hombre deja a su papá y a su mamá, se une a su esposa y los dos se convierten en un solo ser.[j]
25 Tanto el hombre como la mujer estaban desnudos, pero ninguno de los dos se avergonzaba por eso.
