The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
19 The two angels entered Sodom(A) in the evening as Lot was sitting in Sodom’s gateway. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them. He bowed with his face to the ground 2 and said, “My lords, turn aside to your servant’s house, wash your feet, and spend the night. Then you can get up early and go on your way.”
“No,” they said. “We would rather spend the night in the square.” 3 But he urged them so strongly that they followed him and went into his house. He prepared a feast and baked unleavened bread for them, and they ate.
4 Before they went to bed, the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, the whole population, surrounded the house. 5 They called out to Lot and said, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have sex with them!” (B)
6 Lot went out to them at the entrance and shut the door behind him. 7 He said, “Don’t do this evil, my brothers. 8 Look, I’ve got two daughters who haven’t been intimate with a man.(C) I’ll bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want[a] to them. However, don’t do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof.”
9 “Get out of the way!” they said, adding, “This one came here as an alien, but he’s acting like a judge!(D) Now we’ll do more harm to you than to them.” They put pressure on Lot and came up to break down the door. 10 But the angels[b] reached out, brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. 11 They struck the men who were at the entrance of the house, both young and old, with blindness[c] so that they were unable to find the entrance.(E)
12 Then the angels said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here: a son-in-law, your sons and daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of this place, 13 for we are about to destroy this place because the outcry against its people is so great before the Lord, that the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”(F)
14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were going to marry his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city!” (G) But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
15 At daybreak the angels urged Lot on: “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment[d] of the city.” 16 But he hesitated. Because of the Lord’s compassion for him, the men grabbed his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters. They brought him out and left him outside the city.
17 As soon as the angels got them outside, one of them[e] said, “Run for your lives! Don’t look back and don’t stop anywhere on the plain! Run to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords[f]—please. 19 Your servant has indeed found favor with you, and you have shown me great kindness by saving my life. But I can’t run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die. 20 Look, this town is close enough for me to flee to. It is a small place. Please let me run to it—it’s only a small place, isn’t it?—so that I can survive.”
21 And he said to him, “All right,[g] I’ll grant your request[h] about this matter too and will not demolish the town you mentioned. 22 Hurry up! Run to it, for I cannot do anything until you get there.” Therefore the name of the city is Zoar.[i](H)
23 The sun had risen over the land when Lot reached Zoar. 24 Then out of the sky the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah burning sulfur from the Lord.(I) 25 He demolished these cities, the entire plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and whatever grew on the ground. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt.(J)
27 Early in the morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood before the Lord.(K) 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw that smoke was going up from the land like the smoke of a furnace. 29 So it was, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham and brought Lot out of the middle of the upheaval when he demolished the cities where Lot had lived.
The Origin of Moab and Ammon
30 Lot departed from Zoar and lived in the mountains along with his two daughters, because he was afraid to live in Zoar. Instead, he and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us as is the custom of all the land. 32 Come, let’s get our father to drink wine so that we can sleep with him and preserve our father’s line.” 33 So they got their father to drink wine that night, and the firstborn came and slept with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.
34 The next day the firstborn said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight so you can go sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.” 35 That night they again got their father to drink wine, and the younger went and slept with him; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.
36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab.[j] He is the father of the Moabites of today.(L) 38 The younger also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi.[k] He is the father of the Ammonites of today.(M)

19 Los dos ángeles llegaron a la ciudad de Sodoma al atardecer. Lot estaba sentado a la entrada de Sodoma y los vio. Se levantó y fue a encontrarse con ellos, luego se postró rostro en tierra 2 y les dijo:
—Miren, señores, por favor acepten quedarse en la casa de su siervo, pasen aquí la noche y lávense los pies. Mañana pueden levantarse temprano y seguir su camino.
Los ángeles respondieron:
—No, pues pasaremos la noche en la calle.
3 Pero Lot les insistió y los ángeles aceptaron y fueron a su casa. Entonces Lot les preparó comida, les horneó pan sin levadura y los ángeles comieron.
4 Antes de que los ángeles se acostaran a dormir, todos los hombres de Sodoma, viejos y jóvenes, rodearon la casa. 5 Llamaron a Lot y le dijeron:
—¿Dónde están los hombres que llegaron aquí esta noche? Hazlos salir para que podamos tener relaciones sexuales con ellos.
6 Entonces Lot salió y cerrando la puerta tras él 7 les dijo:
—Amigos míos, por favor no vayan a hacer algo tan perverso. 8 Yo soy padre de dos hijas y ellas todavía no han tenido relaciones sexuales con ningún hombre. Se las traeré para que hagan con ellas lo que ustedes deseen, pero no toquen a estos señores porque están en mi casa y por eso yo debo protegerlos.[a]
9 Pero ellos dijeron:
—¡Tú, ven acá! ¿Acaso este que llegó aquí como un extraño nos va a juzgar? ¡Ahora te trataremos a ti peor que a ellos!
Luego rodearon a Lot y se acercaron para tumbar la puerta.
10 Los hombres que estaban adentro abrieron la puerta, agarraron a Lot, lo metieron en la casa y cerraron la puerta. 11 Luego los ángeles hicieron que todos los hombres que estaban afuera, viejos y jóvenes, quedaran ciegos, para que así no pudieran encontrar la puerta.
Destrucción de Sodoma y Gomorra
12 Los dos hombres le dijeron a Lot:
—¿Hay alguien más aparte de tu familia aquí? Llévate de este lugar a tus hijos, tus hijas, los esposos de tus hijas y a todos tus parientes que se encuentren aquí en la ciudad, 13 porque vamos a destruirla. El SEÑOR ha escuchado lo perversa que es esta ciudad y entonces el SEÑOR nos envió para destruirla.
14 Entonces Lot salió y les dijo a los esposos de sus hijas:
—Levántense y abandonen este lugar, porque el SEÑOR va a destruir la ciudad pronto.
Pero sus yernos pensaron que estaba bromeando. 15 Al amanecer, los ángeles apuraron a Lot diciéndole:
—Levántate y toma a tu esposa y a tus dos hijas que están aquí, porque si no lo haces serás destruido cuando esta ciudad sea castigada.
16 Pero Lot se demoró en irse. Así que los hombres lo tomaron de la mano con su esposa y sus hijas, porque el SEÑOR estaba siendo misericordioso con él, lo sacaron y lo dejaron fuera de la ciudad. 17 Cuando los habían sacado de la ciudad, uno de los ángeles dijo:
—¡Escapa para salvar tu vida! No mires atrás y no te detengas en ningún valle. Corre hacia las montañas porque si no lo haces, serás destruido.
18 Entonces Lot les dijo:
—No, señores, 19 ustedes han sido muy buenos conmigo, su siervo, y al salvar mi vida me han demostrado gran bondad, pero no puedo correr hacia las montañas porque temo que la destrucción me alcance y muera. 20 Miren, aquella ciudad queda lo suficientemente cerca como para correr hacia allá. Es una ciudad pequeñita, déjenme escapar hacia allá. ¿Acaso no es una ciudad pequeña? Así habrán salvado mi vida.
21 Entonces el ángel le dijo:
—Sí, también te haré ese favor: No destruiré la ciudad que me has mencionado. 22 ¡Apúrate! ¡Huye allá! Porque no podré hacer nada hasta que tú llegues.
Por esa razón, esa ciudad fue llamada Zoar[b].
23 Lot llegó a Zoar al amanecer. 24 Luego el SEÑOR hizo que desde el cielo lloviera fuego y azufre sobre Sodoma y Gomorra. 25 Así destruyó esas ciudades, el valle, todos sus habitantes y todo lo que crecía en el suelo.
26 La esposa de Lot miró hacia atrás y se convirtió en un bloque de sal.
27 Abraham se levantó temprano por la mañana y fue al lugar donde se había encontrado con el SEÑOR. 28 Miró hacia Sodoma, Gomorra y todo el valle, y vio que salía humo de la tierra, como el humo que sale de un horno.
29 Cuando Dios destruyó las ciudades del valle, se ocupó de Abraham y libró a Lot al sacarlo del desastre.
Las hijas de Lot
30 Lot se fue de Zoar y se quedó a vivir en las montañas en compañía de sus dos hijas. Como tenía temor de quedarse en Zoar, él y sus dos hijas se quedaron en una cueva. 31 La hija mayor le dijo a la otra:
—Nuestro papá está viejo, y aquí no hay un hombre que se case con nosotras como sería lo normal. 32 Ven, emborrachemos con vino a papá, luego irás tú a acostarte en su cama y tendremos relaciones sexuales con él. De esta manera mantendremos viva nuestra familia a través de nuestro padre.
33 Esa noche ellas le dieron vino a su papá y lo emborracharon. Entonces la hija mayor fue y tuvo relaciones sexuales con su papá, aunque él no se dio cuenta cuando ella se acostó con él ni cuando ella se levantó.
34 Al día siguiente, la hija mayor le dijo a la otra:
—Anoche me acosté con mi papá y tuve relaciones sexuales con él. Emborrachémoslo con vino esta noche también, luego tú irás a acostarte y a tener relaciones sexuales con él. De esta manera mantendremos viva nuestra familia a través de nuestro papá.
35 Esa noche ellas le dieron vino a su papá y lo emborracharon. Entonces la hija menor fue y tuvo relaciones sexuales con su papá, aunque él no se dio cuenta cuando ella se acostó con él ni cuando ella se levantó de su cama.
36 Las dos hijas de Lot quedaron embarazadas de su papá. 37 La hija mayor dio a luz a un niño. Lo llamó Moab[c]. Él es el padre de todos los moabitas actuales. 38 La hija menor también dio a luz a un niño. Lo llamó Ben Amí[d]. Él es el padre de todos los amonitas actuales.

19 And the two angels came to Sodom in the evening. And Lot was sitting in the gateway of Sodom. Then Lot saw them and stood up to meet them. And he bowed down with his face to the ground. 2 And he said, “Behold, my lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the square.” 3 But he urged them strongly,[a] and they turned aside with him and came into his house. And he made a meal for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. 4 Before they laid down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man,[b] surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we may know[c] them.” 6 But Lot went out to them at the entrance, and he shut the door behind him. 7 And he said, “No, my brothers, please do not do such a wrong thing. 8 Behold, I have two daughters who have not known[d] a man. Please, let me bring them out to you; then do to them as it seems good in your eyes. Only to these men do not do this thing, since they came under my roof[e] for protection.” 9 But they said, “Step aside!” Then they said, “This fellow[f] came to dwell as a foreigner and he acts as a judge! Now we shall do worse to you than them!” And they pressed very hard against the man, against Lot, and they drew near to break the door. 10 Then the men reached out with their hands and brought Lot in to them, into the house, and they shut the door. 11 And the men who were at the entrance of the house they struck with blindness, both small and great, and they were unable to find the entrance. 12 Then the men said to Lot, “Who is here with you? Bring out from the place your sons-in-law, and your sons and your daughters, and all who are with you in the city. 13 For we are about to destroy this place, because their cry has become great before Yahweh. Yahweh sent us to destroy it.” 14 Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law who were taking[g] his daughters and said, “Get up! Go out from this place, because Yahweh is going to destroy the city!” But it seemed like a joke[h] in the eyes of his sons-in-law. 15 And as the dawn came up the angels urged Lot saying, “Get up, take your wife and your two daughters who are staying with you,[i] lest you be destroyed with the punishment of the city.” 16 But when he lingered, the men seized him by his hand and his wife’s hand, and his two daughters by hand, on account of the mercy of Yahweh upon him. And they brought him out and set him outside of the city. 17 And after bringing them outside one said, “Flee for your life; do not look behind you, and do not stand anywhere in the plain. Flee to the mountains lest you be destroyed.” 18 And Lot said to them, “No, please, my lords. 19 Behold, your servant has found favor in your eyes and you have shown me great kindness[j] in saving my life. But I cannot flee to the mountains, lest the disaster overtake me and I die. 20 Behold, this city is near enough to flee there, and it is a little one. Please, let me flee there. Is it not a little one? Then my life shall be saved.” 21 And he said to him, “Behold, I will grant this favor as well;[k] that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. 22 Escape there quickly, for I cannot do this thing until you get there.” Therefore, there name of the city was called Zoar.
The Destruction of Sodom
23 After the sun had risen[l] upon the earth and Lot had entered Zoar, 24 Yahweh rained down from heaven upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh. 25 And he overthrew those cities and the whole plain, and the inhabitants of the cities and the vegetation of the ground. 26 But his[m] wife looked back,[n] and she became a pillar of salt. 27 And Abraham arose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before Yahweh. 28 And he looked down upon the surface of Sodom and Gomorrah, and upon the whole surface of the land, the plain. And he saw that,[o] behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a smelting furnace. 29 So it was, when God destroyed the cities of the plain that God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out from the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.
Lot and His Daughters
30 And Lot went out from Zoar and settled in the hill country[p] with his two daughters, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. So he lived in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn daughter said to the younger one, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to come in to us according to the manner of all the land. 32 Come, let us give our father wine to drink and let us lie with him[q] that we may secure descendants through our father.”[r] 33 And they gave their father wine to drink that night, and the firstborn went and lay with her father, but he did not know when she lay down or when she got up. 34 And it happened that, the next day the firstborn said to the younger one, “Look, I laid with my father last night. Let us give him wine to drink also tonight, then go and lie with him that we may secure descendants through our father.”[s] 35 And they gave their father wine to drink again that night, and the younger got up and lay with him, but he did not know when she lay down or when she got up. 36 And the two daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father. 37 The firstborn gave birth to a son, and she called his name Moab. He is the father of Moab until this day. 38 And the younger, she also gave birth to a son, and she called his name Ben-Ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites[t] until this day.
