Hagar and Ishmael
16 Now Sarai,(A) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.(B) But she had an Egyptian slave(C) named Hagar;(D) 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.(E) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(F)
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan(G) ten years,(H) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar,(I) and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.(J) 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”(K)
6 “Your slave is in your hands,(L)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated(M) Hagar; so she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord(N) found Hagar near a spring(O) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.(P) 8 And he said, “Hagar,(Q) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”(R)
“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.
9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(S)
11 The angel of the Lord(T) also said to her:
“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.(U)
You shall name him(V) Ishmael,[a](W)
for the Lord has heard of your misery.(X)
12 He will be a wild donkey(Y) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward[b] all his brothers.(Z)”
13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,(AA)” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.”(AB) 14 That is why the well(AC) was called Beer Lahai Roi[d];(AD) it is still there, between Kadesh(AE) and Bered.
15 So Hagar(AF) bore Abram a son,(AG) and Abram gave the name Ishmael(AH) to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old(AI) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

16 Hasta ese día Saray, la esposa de Abram, no le había podido dar ningún hijo, pero ella tenía una esclava egipcia llamada Agar. 2 Entonces Saray le dijo a Abram:
—Tú sabes que el SEÑOR no me ha permitido tener hijos, así que ten relaciones sexuales con mi esclava. Tal vez yo pueda tener un hijo por medio de ella.
Abram hizo lo que Saray le dijo. 3 Cuando Abram llevaba diez años viviendo en la tierra de Canaán, su esposa Saray tomó a su esclava Agar y se la dio como mujer a su esposo Abram.
4 Abram tuvo relaciones sexuales con Agar y ella quedó embarazada. Cuando ella se enteró de que estaba embarazada, empezó a creerse más que Saray. 5 Entonces Saray le dijo a Abram:
—Tú eres el culpable de lo que me está pasando. Yo misma entregué a mi esclava en tus brazos y cuando ella vio que estaba embarazada, me volví despreciable para ella. Que el SEÑOR decida quién, entre tú y yo, tiene la razón.
6 Pero Abram le dijo a Saray:
—Mira, esa esclava es tuya, haz con ella lo que tú quieras.
Entonces Saray trató mal a la esclava, y la esclava huyó.
Ismael, el hijo de Agar
7 Un ángel del SEÑOR la encontró en el desierto cerca de una fuente de agua que está en el camino de Sur, 8 y le dijo:
—Agar, esclava de Saray, ¿de dónde vienes y para dónde vas?
Y ella respondió:
—Estoy huyendo de mi señora Saray.
9 Después el ángel del SEÑOR le dijo:
—Regresa a tu señora y sométete a su autoridad.
10 Además el ángel del SEÑOR le dijo:
—Multiplicaré a tus hijos grandemente, tanto que no podrán contarse.
11 El ángel del SEÑOR también le dijo:
—Ahora que estás embarazada,
darás a luz a un hijo al que llamarás Ismael[a]
ya que el SEÑOR ha escuchado tu tristeza.
12 Será tan libre como un asno salvaje.
Luchará contra todo el mundo
y todo el mundo luchará contra él.
Vivirá en desacuerdo con todos sus hermanos.[b]
13 Como el SEÑOR le había hablado, ella le puso por nombre: «Eres el Dios que me ve»[c], porque como ella dijo: «En realidad he visto aquí a Aquel que me ve».[d] 14 Por eso, esa fuente fue llamada «Pozo del Ser Viviente que me ve»[e], y todavía está ahí, entre Cades y Béred.
15 Agar dio a luz al hijo de Abram, y Abram lo llamó Ismael. 16 Abram tenía 86 años de edad cuando Agar dio a luz a su hijo Ismael.
