12 For the LORD had said to Abram, “Get out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your father’s house, to the land that I will show you.

² “And I will make a great nation from you, and will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.

³ “I will also bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and in you shall all families of the Earth be blessed.”

⁴ So, Abram departed, just as the LORD instructed him; and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

⁵ Then, Abram took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, his brother’s son, and all their substance that they possessed, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. And they came to the land of Canaan.

⁶ So, Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, and to the plain of Moreh (and the Canaanite was in the land then).

⁷ And the LORD appeared to Abram, and said, “To your seed will I give this land.” And there he built an altar to the LORD Who had appeared to him.

⁸ Afterward, leaving there for the mountain east of Bethel, he pitched his tent (having Bethel on the West side and Ai on the east). And there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the Name of the LORD.

⁹ Again, Abram went forth, going and journeying toward the south.

¹⁰ Then there came a famine in the land. Therefore, Abram went down into Egypt, to sojourn there; for there was a great famine in the land.

¹¹ And when he drew near to enter into Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “Behold, now, I know that you are a fair woman to look upon.

¹² “Therefore, it will happen that when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘She is his wife.’ So, they will kill me, but they will keep you alive.

¹³ “Say, I implore you, that you are my sister; so that I may fare well because of you, and that my life may be preserved by you.”

¹⁴ Now, when Abram had come into Egypt, the Egyptians looked at the woman (for she was very fair).

¹⁵ And the Princes of Pharaoh saw her and told Pharaoh about her. So, the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.

¹⁶ Who treated Abram well for her sake; and he had sheep and oxen and male donkeys, and menservants and maidservants and female donkeys and camels.

¹⁷ But the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues, because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

¹⁸ Then Pharaoh called Abram, and said, “Why have you done this to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

¹⁹ “Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I would take her to be my wife? Now, therefore, here is your wife. Take her and go your way.”

²⁰ And Pharaoh gave men a commandment concerning him; and they sent him forth and his wife and all that he had.
