De farao door Abram misleid
12 Eerder had de Here Abram de opdracht gegeven: ‘Verlaat uw land en uw familie en ga naar het land dat Ik u zal wijzen. 2 Dan zal Ik u de vader van een groot volk maken. Ik zal u zegenen en uw naam overal beroemd maken. U zult vele anderen tot een zegen zijn. 3 Als iemand u zegent, zal Ik hem zegenen en als iemand u vervloekt, zal Ik hem vervloeken. U zult voor alle volken een zegen zijn.’
4 Abram gehoorzaamde de Here en vertrok met zijn neef Lot. Abram was toen vijfenzeventig jaar. 5 Hij nam zijn vrouw Sarai, zijn neef Lot en al zijn bezittingen mee: vee en slaven die hij in Haran had verzameld. Zo kwamen zij in Kanaän aan.
6 Trekkend door het land kwamen zij in de buurt van Sichem, bij het eikenbos Moré. In dat gebied leefden in die tijd Kanaänieten. 7 Daar verscheen de Here opnieuw aan Abram en zei: ‘Dit land zal Ik aan uw nageslacht geven.’ Abram bouwde een altaar op de plaats waar hij de Here ontmoette. 8 Daarna trok hij in zuidelijke richting naar het heuvelachtige gebied tussen Betel in het westen en Ai in het oosten. Hij zette daar zijn tent op, bouwde een altaar voor de Here en aanbad Hem. 9 Zo trok Abram steeds verder naar het zuiden in de richting van de Negev.
10 Er brak echter een zware hongersnood uit in Kanaän en Abram besloot naar Egypte uit te wijken. 11-13 Toen zij de grens van Egypte naderden, begon Abram zich zorgen te maken. Hij zei tegen zijn vrouw Sarai: ‘Je bent een knappe vrouw. Als de Egyptenaren jou zien, zouden ze mij wel eens kunnen doden om jou te krijgen. Daarom kun je beter zeggen dat je mijn zuster bent. Dan zullen de Egyptenaren mij goed behandelen, ter wille van jou!’ 14,15 En inderdaad, zo gauw de Egyptenaren de schoonheid van Sarai zagen, brachten zij hun koning, de farao, op de hoogte. Hij nam Sarai op in zijn harem. 16 De farao overlaadde Abram met geschenken: schapen, runderen, ezels, slaven, slavinnen en kamelen. 17 Maar de Here stuurde zware plagen over de hele hofhouding, omdat de farao Sarai in zijn harem had opgenomen.
18 Toen riep de farao Abram bij zich. ‘Wat hebt u mij aangedaan? Waarom hebt u gezegd dat Sarai uw zuster was, zodat ik haar als mijn vrouw heb genomen? Waarom hebt u mij niet verteld dat zij uw vrouw is? 19 Hoe kon u haar aan mij afstaan door te zeggen dat zij uw zuster is? Neem haar maar terug en vertrek!’ 20 Begeleid door een gewapend escorte werden Abram en zijn vrouw met al hun bezittingen het land uitgezet.

12 Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”
4 So Abram went, as Yahweh had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites were in the land.
7 Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.”[a]
He built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him. 8 He left from there to go to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and called on Yahweh’s name. 9 Abram traveled, still going on toward the South.
10 There was a famine in the land. Abram went down into Egypt to live as a foreigner there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 When he had come near to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at. 12 It will happen that when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive. 13 Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you.”
14 When Abram had come into Egypt, some Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 He dealt well with Abram for her sake. He had sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. 17 Yahweh afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this that you have done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way.”
20 Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they escorted him away with his wife and all that he had.

The Call of Abram
12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household(A) to the land(B) I will show you.(C)
2 “I will make you into a great nation,(D)
and I will bless you;(E)
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.[a](F)
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;(G)
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.(H)”[b]
4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot(I) went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old(J) when he set out from Harran.(K) 5 He took his wife Sarai,(L) his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated(M) and the people(N) they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan,(O) and they arrived there.
6 Abram traveled through the land(P) as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh(Q) at Shechem.(R) At that time the Canaanites(S) were in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram(T) and said, “To your offspring[c] I will give this land.(U)”(V) So he built an altar there to the Lord,(W) who had appeared to him.
8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel(X) and pitched his tent,(Y) with Bethel on the west and Ai(Z) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.(AA)
9 Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.(AB)

10 Now there was a famine in the land,(AD) and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.(AE) 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai,(AF) “I know what a beautiful woman(AG) you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister,(AH) so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.”
14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman.(AI) 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.(AJ)
17 But the Lord inflicted(AK) serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household(AL) because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?”(AM) he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?(AN) 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’(AO) so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!” 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

12 Herren sa till Abram: ”Lämna ditt land, dina släktingar och din faders hus och gå till det land som jag ska visa dig!
2 Jag ska göra dig till ett stort folk.
Jag ska välsigna dig och göra ditt namn stort,
så att du blir till välsignelse.
3 Jag ska välsigna dem som välsignar dig
och förbanna dem som hädar dig.
Genom dig ska alla jordens släkter bli välsignade.”
4 Då bröt Abram upp, som Herren hade sagt till honom, och Lot följde också med. Abram var 75 år gammal när han lämnade Harran. 5 Han tog med sig sin hustru Saraj, sin brorson Lot och allt han ägde, boskapen och slavarna han hade fått i Harran, och kom slutligen till Kanaan. 6 När de reste genom Kanaan, kom de till en plats nära Shekem och slog läger bredvid Mores ek[a]. Landet beboddes vid den tiden av kanaanéer.
7 Här uppenbarade sig Herren för Abram och sa: ”Jag ska ge detta land till dina ättlingar[b].” Abram byggde ett altare där åt Herren som hade uppenbarat sig för honom. 8 Efteråt lämnade Abram platsen och reste till det bergiga landskapet mellan Betel i väst och Aj i öst. Där slog han läger och byggde ett altare åt Herren och åkallade Herren. 9 Sedan flyttade han undan för undan längre söderut till Negev.
10 Det blev hungersnöd i landet. Abram reste då ner till Egypten för att bo där, eftersom hungersnöden var så svår. 11 När han närmade sig Egypten, sa han till sin hustru Saraj: ”Jag vet ju att du är en mycket vacker kvinna. 12 När egypterna ser dig kommer de att säga: ’Detta är hans hustru.’ Då dödar de mig och låter dig leva. 13 Säg därför att du är min syster, och då kommer egypterna att behandla mig väl för din skull och skona mitt liv.” 14 När de anlände till Egypten, såg egypterna Sarajs skönhet. 15 Och när faraos hovmän lovordade henne för honom, lät han hämta henne till sitt palats. 16 Farao behandlade Abram väl för hennes skull: han fick får, oxar, åsnor, slavar av båda könen och kameler.
17 Men Herren sände fruktansvärda plågor över farao och hans hov på grund av Abrams hustru Saraj. 18 Då kallade farao på Abram och anklagade honom: ”Vad är det du har gjort mot mig?” sa han. ”Varför talade du inte om för mig att hon är din hustru? 19 Varför sa du att hon var din syster och gick med på att jag gifte mig med henne? Ta henne nu och ge dig iväg!” 20 Sedan befallde Farao sina män att föra ut dem allesammans ur landet, Abram, hans hustru och allt vad han ägde.
