17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 19 And Lamech took two wives. The name of one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives:

“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say:
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for striking me.
24 (A)If Cain's revenge is sevenfold,
    then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold.”

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed[a] for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To (B)Seth also a son was born, and he called his name (C)Enosh. At that time people began (D)to call upon the name of the Lord.

Adam's Descendants to Noah

This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, (E)he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man[b] when they were created. When Adam had lived for 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and (F)named him Seth. (G)The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, (H)and he died.

When Seth had lived for 105 years, (I)he fathered Enosh. Seth lived after he fathered Enosh for 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.

When Enosh had lived for 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan for 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.

12 When Kenan had lived for 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel for 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived for 65 years, he fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared for 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.

18 When Jared had lived for 162 years he fathered (J)Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch for 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.

21 When Enoch had lived for 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch (K)walked with God[c] after he fathered Methuselah for 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch (L)walked with God, and he was not,[d] (M)for God took him.

25 When Methuselah had lived for 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech for 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

28 When Lamech had lived for 182 years, he fathered a son 29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground (N)that the Lord has cursed this one shall bring us relief[e] from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” 30 Lamech lived after he fathered Noah for 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered (O)Shem, Ham, and (P)Japheth.

Increasing Corruption on Earth

When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, (Q)“My Spirit shall not abide in[f] man for ever, (R)for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim[g] were on the earth in those days, and also afterwards, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

(S)The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every (T)intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And (U)the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it (V)grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah (W)found favour in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah and the Flood

These are the generations of Noah. (X)Noah was a righteous man, (Y)blameless in his generation. Noah (Z)walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God (AA)saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, (AB)for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, (AC)“I have determined to make an end of all flesh,[h] for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.[i] Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits,[j] its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof[k] for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 (AD)For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But (AE)I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.” 22 (AF)Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
