³⁹ What was torn by wild beasts I did not bring to you. I bore the loss of it myself. ^(A)From my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.

The Shepherds and the Angels

⁸ And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

³⁴ But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, ³⁵ I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.

^8 (A)He shall not eat what dies of itself or is torn by beasts, and so make himself unclean by it: I am the Lord.’

^31 (A)“You shall be consecrated to me. Therefore ^(B)you shall not eat any flesh that is torn by beasts in the field; ^(C)you shall throw it to the dogs.

¹⁰ “If a man gives to his neighbor a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep safe, and it dies or is injured or is driven away, without anyone seeing it, ^11 (A)an oath by the Lord shall be between them both to see whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor's property. The owner shall accept the oath, and he shall not make restitution. ¹² But if ^(B)it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. ¹³ If it is torn by beasts, let him bring it as evidence. He shall not make restitution for what has been torn.

¹² He who is ^(A)a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and ^(B)leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and ^(C)scatters them. ¹³ He flees because ^(D)he is a hired hand and ^(E)cares nothing for the sheep.
