50 Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him.(A) 2 Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him,(B) 3 taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.(C)
4 When the days of mourning(D) had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court,(E) “If I have found favor in your eyes,(F) speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, 5 ‘My father made me swear an oath(G) and said, “I am about to die;(H) bury me in the tomb I dug for myself(I) in the land of Canaan.”(J) Now let me go up and bury my father;(K) then I will return.’”
6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”
7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh’s officials(L) accompanied him—the dignitaries of his court(M) and all the dignitaries of Egypt— 8 besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father’s household.(N) Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.(O) 9 Chariots(P) and horsemen[a] also went up with him. It was a very large company.
10 When they reached the threshing floor(Q) of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly;(R) and there Joseph observed a seven-day period(S) of mourning(T) for his father.(U) 11 When the Canaanites(V) who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.”(W) That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.[b]
12 So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them:(X) 13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah,(Y) near Mamre,(Z) which Abraham had bought along with the field(AA) as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.(AB) 14 After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.(AC)
Joseph Reassures His Brothers
15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge(AD) against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”(AE) 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions(AF) before he died: 17 ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins(AG) and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’(AH) Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.(AI)” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.(AJ)
18 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him.(AK) “We are your slaves,”(AL) they said.
19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?(AM) 20 You intended to harm me,(AN) but God intended(AO) it for good(AP) to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.(AQ) 21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.(AR)” And he reassured them and spoke kindly(AS) to them.
The Death of Joseph
22 Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years(AT) 23 and saw the third generation(AU) of Ephraim’s(AV) children.(AW) Also the children of Makir(AX) son of Manasseh(AY) were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.[c](AZ)
24 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die.(BA) But God will surely come to your aid(BB) and take you up out of this land to the land(BC) he promised on oath to Abraham,(BD) Isaac(BE) and Jacob.”(BF) 25 And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath(BG) and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones(BH) up from this place.”(BI)
26 So Joseph died(BJ) at the age of a hundred and ten.(BK) And after they embalmed him,(BL) he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

So the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 Forty days were required for it, for that is how many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians (C)wept for him seventy days.
4 And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, (D)“If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5 ‘My father made me swear, saying, “I am about to die: in my tomb (E)that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.” Now therefore, let me please go up and bury my father. Then I will return.’” 6 And Pharaoh answered, “Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear.” 7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. With him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left (F)in the land of Goshen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company. 10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, (G)they lamented there with a very great and grievous lamentation, and he (H)made a mourning for his father seven days. 11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim;[a] it is beyond the Jordan. 12 Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them, 13 for (I)his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham (J)bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
God's Good Purposes
15 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” 16 So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died: 17 ‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of (K)the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 His brothers also came and (L)fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for (M)am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but (N)God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people[b] should be kept alive, as they are today. 21 So do not fear; (O)I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
The Death of Joseph
22 So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and his father's house. Joseph lived 110 years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children (P)of the third generation. The (Q)children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were (R)counted as Joseph's own.[c] 24 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but (S)God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land (T)that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 Then (U)Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” 26 So Joseph died, being 110 years old. They (V)embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Bwe batyo abasawo ne bakalirira omulambo gwa Isirayiri; 3 (C)baali beetaaga ennaku amakumi ana okukoleramu ekyo. Ezo ze nnaku ezakaliririrwangamu emirambo. Abamisiri ne bakungubagira Yakobo okumala ennaku nsanvu.
4 Awo ennaku ez’okukungubagiramu Yakobo bwe zaggwaako, Yusufu n’ayogera n’ennyumba ya Falaawo, n’agamba nti, “Obanga ndabye ekisa mu maaso gammwe munjogerereyo ewa Falaawo. Mumugambe nti, 5 (D)‘Kitange yandayiza ng’agamba nti, “Nnaatera okufa; mu ntaana yange gye nesimira mu nsi ya Kanani, omwo mw’onziikanga.” Kale kaakano mbasaba mundeke ŋŋende nziike kitange; oluvannyuma nkomewo.’ ”
6 Falaawo n’addamu nti, “Genda oziike kitaawo nga bwe yakulayiza.”
7 Awo Yusufu n’ayambuka wamu n’abaweereza ba Falaawo bonna, n’abakulu b’ennyumba ye, n’abakulu ba Misiri bonna, 8 n’ab’ennyumba ya Yusufu, ne baganda be, n’ab’ennyumba ya kitaawe. Abaana bokka be baasigala mu Goseni n’ebisibo byabwe n’amagana gaabwe. 9 N’agenda n’amagaali n’abeebagala embalaasi era ekibiina kyali kinene nnyo.
10 (E)Bwe baatuuka ku gguuliro lya Atadi ng’osomose Yoludaani, ne bakungubaga okukungubaga okutagambika okujjudde ennaku; Yusufu n’akungubagira kitaawe okumala ennaku musanvu. 11 Abantu ab’omu nsi, Abakanani, bwe baalaba okukungubaga mu gguuliro lya Atadi ne bagamba nti, “Okukungubaga kuno kwa ntiisa eri Abamisiri.” Ekifo ekyo kyekyava kiyitibwa Aberumizirayimu, ekiri emitala wa Yoludaani.
12 Bwe batyo batabani ba Yakobo ne bakola nga bwe yabalagira. 13 (F)Baamwetikka ne bamutuusa mu Kanani, ne bamuziika mu mpuku eyali mu nnimiro ya Makupeera, okumpi ne Mamule, Ibulayimu gye yagula okuva ku Efulooni Omukiiti, aziikengamu abantu be. 14 Yusufu bwe yamala okuziika kitaawe n’addayo e Misiri wamu ne baganda be ne bonna abaayambuka naye okuziika kitaawe.
15 (G)Baganda ba Yusufu bwe baalaba nga kitaabwe afudde, ne bagamba nti, “Osanga Yusufu ajja kutukyawa yeesasuze olw’ebibi byonna bye twamukola.” 16 Kyebaava bamutumira nga bagamba nti, “Kitaawo bwe yali tannafa yatulagira nti 17 tugambanga Yusufu nti, ‘Nkusaba osonyiwe baganda bo bye bakusobya n’ekibi kyabwe, kubanga baasobya nnyo gy’oli.’ Kale nno kaakano tukusaba osonyiwe okusobya kw’abaweereza ba Katonda wa kitaawo.” Yusufu bwe baakimugamba n’akaaba.
18 (H)Baganda be ne bagenda gy’ali ne beeyala mu maaso ge ne bagamba nti, “Laba, tuli baddu bo.” 19 (I)Naye Yusufu n’abagamba nti, “Temutya, nze ndi mu kifo kya Katonda? 20 (J)Mwagenderera okunnumya, naye Katonda n’akifuula ekirungi, n’akikozesa abantu baleme okufa. 21 (K)Noolwekyo temutya, nzija kubaliisa mmwe n’abaana bammwe.” Bw’atyo n’abagumya n’abazaamu amaanyi.
Okufa kwa Yusufu
22 (L)Awo Yusufu n’abeera mu Misiri, ye n’ennyumba ya kitaawe. N’awangaala emyaka kikumi mu kkumi. 23 (M)N’alaba abaana ba Efulayimu, abazzukulu ab’omugigi ogwokusatu. Era n’alaba n’aba Makiri mutabani wa Manase abaazaalirwa ku maviivi ga Yusufu.
24 (N)Yusufu n’agamba baganda be nti, “Nnaatera okufa, naye Katonda alibakyalira n’abalinnyisa okubaggya mu nsi eno; n’abatwala mu nsi gye yalayirira Ibulayimu, ne Isaaka ne Yakobo.” 25 (O)Awo Yusufu n’alayiza abaana ba Isirayiri ng’agamba nti, “Katonda alibakyalira, nammwe mulinyisanga amagumba gange okugaggya wano.”
26 (P)Bw’atyo Yusufu n’afa, ng’alina emyaka kikumi mu kkumi; ne bakalirira omulambo gwe n’ateekebwa mu ssanduuko mu Misiri.
